An extraordinary football talent was gifted to a boy. Let’s begin without further ado.

Life in the Early Years and Family Background

He was born in Linz, Austria on May 6, 1994 to Ruzica Kovacic and Stipo Kovacic. Bosnian Croatian parents fled the bitter Yugoslav war in 1991 and migrated to Linz, Austria, where Kovacic was born.

The Snub of Steven Gerrard

Almost every kid dreams of taking a photo with a sports star or getting their autograph. During Liverpool’s visit to his academy’s ground, Mateo Kovacic served as a ball boy for the senior team.

Mateo vowed then and there to perform hard as a professional, to make amends for the Liverpool legend’s actions.

The desire to turn pro wasn’t just a passing fancy for him. He possessed a steely determination to make his dreams come true. In a strange twist of fate, Liverpool identified Kovacic as a potential replacement for Steven Gerrard in 2015.

He rejected the club offer due to his distaste for Steven Gerrard. Mateo’s early football career story follows his relationship story.
