Lauder Collection, a display of 700 of his postcards that represented a small portion of his pledged gift of 120,000 postcards to the museum, debuted at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in the fall of 2012. In an interview with The New York, Lauder detailed how he became a collector because of postcards, and how he continued to acquire these “mini-masterpieces” throughout his life, to the point where his late wife, Evelyn, referred to the collection as her “mistress.”

In order to assist the Gotham Book Mart in re-establishing its presence in the city after the owner had already sold its long-ago building and required a new place, Lauder used his passion for postcards to become acquainted with one of the store’s proprietors. Together with a partner, Lauder purchased a building at 16 East 46th Street and leased the storefront space to Gotham.

When Gotham later fell behind on its rent payments, Lauder and his partner eventually filed for eviction. The New York City Marshal then held a highly publicised auction of the bookstore’s contents, which Lauder and his partner purchased in a lot. Many other independent booksellers, as well as collectors who were there and hoping to buy some of the bibliophilic treasures, objected to this.
