Long-time big supporter of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Lauder. He joined the museum’s acquisitions board in 1971, and in 1977, while serving as the company’s president, he was elected as a trustee of the Whitney. In 1990, he was elected president, and he has been chairman since 1994. He is Whitney’s most active fundraiser and has contributed both money and numerous pieces of artwork to the institution.
His $131 million donation in 2008 was the greatest in the museum’s existence.
