Early Life

He was named after his uncle Evelyn Achille de Rothschild, who was killed in action during World War I, the son of Anthony Gustav de Rothschild (1887–1961) and Yvonne Lydia Louise Cahen d’Anvers (1899–1977). During World War II, Evelyn de Rothschild spent a good portion of his formative years in America.

He attended Harrow School before enrolling in Trinity College, University of Cambridge, where he studied history but left before graduating. As one of England’s most eligible bachelors, Evelyn de Rothschild, who was born into affluence, spent his childhood travelling, partying, and enjoying thoroughbred horse racing as well as fancy sports automobiles and polo.

He didn’t decide to join N M Rothschild & Sons banking house to receive training in the family business until he was 26 years old. Due to sickness, his father had to step down as chairman in 1955, just a few years before Sir Evelyn joined the family business. His cousin Victor Rothschild then assumed the role.

Professional Life

In 1968, Guy de Rothschild, a member of the French branch of the family, was made a partner at N M Rothschild & Sons, and Evelyn de Rothschild was named a director of the Paris-based de Rothschild Frères. He succeeded Victor Rothschild as bank chairman in 1976, and in 1982 he was named chairman of Rothschilds Continuation Holdings AG, the organisation in charge of the merchant banking business.

From 1994 to 2003, when he managed the merging of the family’s French and UK houses, he served as co-chairman of Rothschild Bank AG, Zurich. After the several branches were combined, David René de Rothschild of the French branch took over as executive chairman of Rothschild International, and Sir Evelyn remained as non-executive chairman of N M Rothschild & Sons.

He established the holding company E.L. Rothschild in 2003 with his wife, Lynn Forester de Rothschild, to oversee their investments in The Economist and numerous Indian businesses. Together with his wife Lynn Forester de Rothschild, de Rothschild co-founded the holding firm E.L. Rothschild in 2003.

Additionally, he has held a number of corporate positions, including chairman and director of The Economist, United Racecourses, and the British Merchant Banking and Securities House Association. Formerly, he oversaw both Lord Black’s Daily Telegraph and the newspaper business owned by Lord Beaverbrook.

In addition to IBM United Kingdom Holdings Ltd., he served as director of De Beers Consolidated Mines. Additionally, he served as the Milton Keynes Development Corporation’s deputy chairman. Through the establishment of the Eranda Foundation, De Rothschild has worked hard to assist medical research, the advancement of education, and the promotion of the arts.

In addition, he served as the governor of The London School of Economics and Political Science and created and served as chairman of The European Association of Banking and Financial History in Frankfort, Germany. De Rothschild has held a variety of positions in the fields of politics, the arts, medicine, economics, and political science.

He is also well-known for his support of charitable organisations. Evelyn de Rothschild wed Jeannette Bishop, a niece of the jet-engine pioneer Sir Stanley Hooker, in 1966. In 1971, the couple was divorced. Around the end of 1980, Jeanette Bishop, a former family cook, and interpreter, and Gabriella Guerin, who was allegedly murdered, both passed away at age 41. He has two stepchildren from this union: John Forester Stein, who was born in 1988, and Benjamin Forester Stein, who was born in 1985. The de Rothschild pair accepted an invitation to spend one night at the White House as part of their honeymoon after their wedding was announced.
