On October 9, 1958, in Jutaigang Village, Gaoxian Township, Taikang County, Henan, Hui Ka Yan was born into a rural family. His father served in the Second Sino-Japanese War between 1930 and 1940 and is now retired from the military. He started working as a warehouseman in his hometown after the communist state was established. At the age of eight months, Xu’s mother passed away from sepsis. His grandma from his father’s side reared him. He worked for two years at home after finishing high school, first spending a few days in cement product manufacturing. He was in charge of the production crew.

Hui, in 2021, resigned from his position as chairman of Hengda Real Estate, a business that manages property development in mainland China and was responsible for generating 88 per cent of Evergrande’s income in 2017. Zhao Changlong, a seasoned lieutenant who also serves as the onshore unit’s general manager, will take over for him. Hui continues to serve as chairman of Evergrande, which is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He has a 76.7 per cent share there and is worth $14.6 billion. Despite being heavily indebted, the business still intends to provide a plan by the end of July to restructure its more than $300 billion in total liabilities. The Samoan-incorporated Top Shine Global Limited has petitioned the High Court of Hong Kong to dissolve the business, according to a stock exchange filing from the Hong Kong-listed property developer on Monday. Evergrande did not provide further details on the $110 million financial obligations that are the subject of the case.

He received an honorary doctorate in business from the University of West Alabama in 2008 after graduating from Wuhan University of Science and Technology in 1982. Since 2003, Professor Hui has taught management at Wuhan University of Science and Technology. In 2010, he was assigned to that institution’s position of doctorate tutor.
After graduating from college in 1982, Xu was hired by Wuyang Iron and Steel Company’s heat-treatment shop, where he later attained the positions of associate director in 1983 and director in 1985. There, Xu was the director for seven years. He relocated to Shenzhen, a newly established special economic zone in southeast China’s Guangdong province, upon his resignation in 1992. A trading business called “Zhongda” welcomed him. One year later, he was chosen president of its “Quanda” branch office. To start the Guangzhou Pengda Industrial Co., Ltd., Xu relocated to Guangzhou, the provincial capital of Guangdong, on October 1st, 1994. After failing to reach an agreement with the head of this society, Hui Ka Yan quit Zhongda Group in May 1996 with a salary of 2,000 yuan per month. He established the Evergrande Group in March 1997 and served as its chairman of the board. As of 2016, Guangzhou Evergrande football club, one of China’s most prosperous teams, is owned by Xu. Xu announced a three-year, $6.4 billion investment in electric vehicles in 2019. He has over 37 years of expertise in business management, real estate development, and investing. Professor Hui holds positions as vice-chairman of the B20 China Business Council, vice president of the APEC China Business Council, and vice-chairman of the China Enterprise Confederation, China Enterprise Directors Association, and China Real Estate Association, in addition to memberships on the 12th and 13th National Committees of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the standing committees of these committees.

His wealth was estimated to have peaked in 2017 at $45.3 billion, and in 2020 Forbes ranked Xu third among the wealthiest Chinese billionaires. His fortune, however, was predicted to have decreased from 2017 to 2020 by more than $20 billion to $21.8 billion as a result of growing debts, which were made worse by the coronavirus outbreak.
