Roy is from the Bihar village of Mahnar. During his school years, he participated in school plays and community gatherings, which sparked his passion for acting. Roy then relocated to Patna to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication at Patna University. He became actively involved in the collegiate theatrical circuit in Patna, performing street plays. He continued his education at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, where he earned a Diploma in Radio and Television.
Early memories of Cinema and acting
Roy, who was born in the Mahnar block of Bihar’s Vaishali district, had always been drawn to the world of movies. “My first recollections of performing come from watching local Natakas, which were written by a local group of people and performed for the locals. They were entertaining to see, and as I grew older, I began to join these organisations and act in plays with them.
I had always enjoyed entertaining others. In school, I would crack jokes, sing a line or two, and imitate stars and politicians for the pure enjoyment and appreciation of my audience, meaning my peers.
Journey to the City of Dreams
Coming from the Mahnar block of Bihar’s Vaishali district, Roy struggled to perceive and pursue acting as a full-fledged career. That is why, for the longest time, he had to keep his dreams hidden.
He understood that in order to have even a remote possibility of making his goals a reality, he needed to leave his hometown. He moved to Patna to get his degree in Mass Communication from Patna College after finishing his education in Vaishali. Chandan joined the theatre throughout his studies and used to participate in Kalidas Rangalaya to develop his acting talents. Later, he enrolled at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) to study television and radio journalism.
Following that, he worked for the daily Dainik Jagran. His long relationship with theatre began at this point. As a freelance performer, he worked with Shahid Anwar’s Bahuroop theatrical troupe at Jawaharlal Nehru University and the National School of Drama. Even when working in Delhi, his thoughts were constantly drawn to Mumbai. Chandan recognised that this 9-hour job was not for him! “Whenever I used to glance over my cubicle all I ever saw were people working hard and without a break. It reminded me of a maze. And I realised I was squandering my youth. I am squandering my golden years doing something that I don’t love and I left my work at Danik Jagran”.
Chandan, like every other person who eventually reaches their target, recalls the day he landed in Mumbai as if it were yesterday. On October 7, 2017, he took the Gareeb Rath from Nizamuddin and landed at Bandra. He then boarded Bus 221 and arrived at Yari Road. And thus a new chapter in his journey started. The chapter chronicles his tribulations as an actor.
He worked as a journalist for Dainik Jagran after graduating from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication. However, while at IIMC, Roy was involved with the Bahroop Theatre Group, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the National School of Drama Repertory.
