Club Career

Early Professional Career

  • Alexander-Arnold switched from wide midfielder to right-back while in Liverpool’s youth system.
  • It was the position that provided him with the easiest road to the first team, and he thrived in it, earning the praise of former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who predicted a bright future for him in his memoirs.
  • As a consequence of his remarkable growth, Alexander-Arnold was included in manager Brendan Rodgers’ first team squad for the team’s last pre-season friendly against Swindon Town, where he made his unofficial debut for the club in a 2-1 win.

Liverpool

2016–17 season: Development and breakthrough

  • Alexander-Arnold made his professional debut on 25 October 2016, starting in a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round of the EFL Cup, after earlier taking part in Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States.
  • He was booked in the first half for a tackle on Ben Davies, which he subsequently said may have resulted in his being sent out, before being replaced in the 68th minute by first-choice right-back Nathaniel Clyne.
  • Despite the gaffe, he was named to the EFL Cup Team of the Round alongside colleague Daniel Sturridge.

2017–18 season: First Champions League Final

  • Regular right-back Clyne sustained a major back injury in the buildup to the 2017-18 season, giving Alexander-Arnold the option to alternate with Joe Gomez in the early parts of the season.
  • He scored his first goal for the club on 15 August 2017, when he scored from a free kick in a 2-1 first-leg Champions League play-off round win over Bundesliga team Hoffenheim.
  • In doing so, he became the third youngest player in Liverpool history to score on his European debut, behind Michael Owen and David Fairclough.

2018–19 season: Regular starter and Champions League title

  • During the early parts of the next season, he made his 50th game for Liverpool, starting in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham, against whom he had made his debut almost two years before.
  • He was one of ten players nominated for the first Kopa Trophy, an accolade granted by France Football to the greatest young player under the age of 21, in October, and finished sixth in the voting polls, receiving votes from Owen, Denis Law, and Pavel Nedvd.
  • He continued to build on his emerging reputation in the months that followed and was routinely featured in CIES assessments as the world’s most valuable full-back in terms of transfer value.

2019–20 season: Ballon d’Or nomination and Premier League title

  • Alexander-Arnold began the 2019-20 season as Liverpool’s right-back, providing the assist for Origi’s goal in the club’s 4-1 opening game triumph against Norwich City.
  • In doing so, he became only the eighth player in Premier League history to record five successive assists and the first for Liverpool.
  • He played in consecutive triumphs over Southampton and Arsenal, as well as Liverpool’s UEFA Super Cup victory over Chelsea when he scored a penalty in the shootout.

2020–21 season: Further career milestones

  • Alexander-Arnold continued to play regularly for Liverpool during the 2020-21 season, becoming the club’s youngest-ever captain in European competition, and the third-youngest in any competition, when he took the armband during the Reds’ 1-1 Champions League draw against FC Midtjylland on December 9.
  • Later that month, he was chosen to the 2020 FIFA FIFPro Men’s World XI alongside teammates Alisson, Van Dijk, and Thiago Alcântara, as Liverpool began their domestic championship defense by finishing first in the league by Christmas.

2021–22 season: Domestic cup double

  • Alexander-Arnold signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool on July 30.
  • On December 16, Alexander-Arnold scored Liverpool’s third goal in a 3-1 home win over Newcastle United with a 25-yard shot into the top left corner of the goal.
  • This was Liverpool’s 2000th top-flight win, making them the first club in English history to do so.
  • At the age of 23 years and 219 days, Alexander-Arnold became the youngest-ever player to win six major trophies for an English club, namely the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup, following Liverpool’s victory over Chelsea in the 2022 FA Cup Final.

International Career

Youth

  • Alexander-Arnold has represented England at different junior levels, including the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile in 2015.
  • He also scored three goals for England’s U19 squad, including a brace against Croatia and another against Spain, which helped England qualify for the 2017 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
  • He did not play in the tournament because Liverpool agreed with England to rest him ahead of the next season’s league campaign, but the Three Lions went on to win their first-ever trophy in the competition, defeating Portugal in the final.
  • The month after the competition, he was called up for the first time to the England U21 squad for their UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers against the Netherlands and Latvia.
