With friends from college, Fridman founded a window-washing business, an apartment rental agency for foreigners, a business that sold used computers, and a business that imported cigarettes and perfumes in 1988 as Russian politician Mikhail Gorbachev started to open the economy in the late 1980s. These businesses hired students from various Moscow universities.

Later, when Vahe Yengebaryan became the Russian consul in New York in 2003, he developed a close relationship with Fridman’s economic interests. In December 2010, X5 paid $1.65 billion to purchase Kopeyka, another supermarket. The largest food retailer in Russia by sales is X5.
