Gonçalo Manuel Ganchinho Guedes, a professional football player for Wolverhampton Wanderers of the Premier League and the Portugal national team, was born on November 29, 1996. His European Portuguese name is salu. Guedes made his professional debut for the reserves in April 2014 and for the main team six months later at Benfica, where he started his career.

After scoring 11 goals in 63 games across all competitions and collecting five significant trophies, he moved to Paris Saint-Germain in January 2017 for a €30 million transfer fee. Before being loaned to Valencia in September 2017 for a €40 million transfer fee, he played just 13 games for PSG before joining them permanently the following season.

Club Career

Benfica

Guedes, a Benavente native, joined S.L. Benfica’s youth program in 2005 and eventually made it to the juniors squad. He scored every goal in a 5-0 victory against a side of boys three years older on his debut at the age of eight.

In the first season of the UEFA Youth League in 2013–14, he was a member of the Benfica team and helped them defeat Paris Saint-Germain, Anderlecht, Manchester City, and Real Madrid on way to the championship.

He made his professional debut on April 19, 2014, for Benfica B against Porto B in a Segunda Liga match. He played 21 minutes in the eventual 4-1 away loss before being replaced by Rudinilson Silva.

Paris Saint-Germain

Guedes signed a deal with Paris Saint-Germain that was valid until 2021 on January 25, 2017, for a transfer price of €30 million. He stated after signing that he aspired to be like his countryman and former PSG star Pauleta. Manchester United and PSG competed in a bidding war for their services.

Four days later, Guedes made his Ligue 1 championship-winning team debut, taking the place of fellow rookie Julian Draxler for the final three minutes of a 1-1 home tie with Monaco.

Valencia

Guedes was given a one-season loan to Valencia of Spain on September 1, 2017. The connections made between his agent Jorge Mendes and the Valencia owners helped to make the trade possible.

Five days later, in a goalless draw with Fulham, he made his debut in place of Hwang Hee-chan. On August 20, he started his first game in an away loss to Tottenham Hotspur, which ended 1-0.

International Career

Guedes was initially called up by Fernando Santos, the manager of Portugal’s first squad, on November 6, 2015, in preparation for international friendlies against Russia and Luxembourg. He made his international debut against the former eight days later, starting in a 1-0 loss in Krasnodar, becoming the first player under the age of 18 to do so since Cristiano Ronaldo.

In a 3-0 friendly victory against Saudi Arabia on November 10, 2017, Guedes scored his first goal as a senior international and assisted Manuel Fernandes early in the game.
