Lloyd was born in Stamford, Connecticut, the son of Ruth Lloyd, a singer and sister of San Francisco mayor Roger Lapham, and her husband Samuel R. Lloyd, Jr, a lawyer.

He is the most recent of three boys and four girls, one of whom, Samuel Lloyd, was an actor in the 1950s and 1960s. Lloyd’s maternal grandfather, Lewis Henry Lapham, was one of the ancestors of the Texaco oil company, and Lloyd is also a descendant of Mayflower passengers, including John Howland.

Lloyd was raised in Westport, Connecticut where he attended Staples High School and was engaged in establishing the high school’s theatre company, Staples Players. Lloyd began acting from the early age of fourteen.

At the age of nineteen, he began taking classes in New York City’s Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. He made his stage introduction in a production of ‘And They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers’, a play by Spanish playwright Fernando Arrabal.

In 1997, Christopher and fourth wife paid $1.6 million on an 8-acre estate in Montecito, California. They tried to sell this house in the track of their 2005 split for $11 million.
