Chevy Chase is an actor, comedian, and writer from the United States. Chase is best known for his roles in the films Caddyshack and Fletch, as well as his performances on Saturday Night Live. He was born into a prominent family. Initially, he worked in various occupations before becoming an actor with National Lampoon. In the inaugural season of Saturday Night Live, he was a significant cast member, and his frequent Weekend Update portion became a show tradition. He won three Primetime Emmy Awards out of five nominations he received as a performer and screenwriter.

Chase made his feature film debut with the comedy Foul Play in 1978, for which he received two Golden Globe nominations. He’s also famous for his roles as Clark Griswold in a total of five National Lampoon’s Vacation movies. Fletch and its spinoff Fletch Lives were another film franchise with which Chase collaborated. In 1987 and 1988, he hosted the Academy Awards two times in a row. Chevy had his own late-night talk program, The Chevy Chase Show, for a short period of time. From 2009 to 2014, he portrayed Pierce Hawthorne in the NBC comedy television series Community.

Chevy Chase was born to Cathalene P. Browning, a concert piano player, and librettist, and Edward Tinsley Chase, an editor, and author, on 8 October 1943, in New York City, Lower Manhattan. He was born and raised in Woodstock, New York.

His grandparents were artist and commercial illustrator Edward Leigh Chase and Chief of Staff to Admiral R. Spruance, Admiral Miles Browning, on the aircraft carrier CV-6 USS Enterprise during the Battle of Midway in the Second World War.

Chase attended Riverdale Country School, a private day academy in the Riverdale district of The Bronx, New York. In 1962, he received his graduation from the Stockbridge School, a private boarding school in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

During the 1962-1963 academic year, he attended Haverford College. Chase afterward went to Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, where he pursued a pre-medical education and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1967.

Chase worked as a taxi driver, trucker, motorbike messenger, construction laborer, bartender, farmworker, grocery produce manager, sound engineer, wine shop salesperson, and theatre usher before becoming famous.

Following his resignation from Saturday Night Live, Chase became a successful actor in various hit films such as the Oh! Heavenly Dog and Foul Play. When the filming in 1980 for Modern Problems, Chase barely avoided death by electricity. Chase went through a profound melancholy after his near-death incident, as his marriage to Jacqueline had dissolved soon before production began.

Chase married three times. From February 1973 to February 1976, Chase was married to Susan Hewitt. From December 1976 to November 1980, he was married to Jacqueline Carlin. In June 1982, he married Jayni Luke, his third wife.

In 1986 in an interview, Chase stated that he was hospitalized at the Betty Ford Clinic for an addiction to pharmaceutical painkillers. He got alcoholism treatment at the Hazelden Clinic in 2016.

  • In 1967 Chase co-founded Channel One, an underground comedy troupe. He also worked on a number of unusual projects at this time.
  • Chase wrote a one-page parody of Mission: Impossible for Mad Magazine in 1970.
  • In 1973, he was a writer and lead actor of the syndicated radio series The National Lampoon Radio Hour, after making comedy his full-time job.
  • In October 1975 he was one of the first cast members of the NBC late-night comedy show Saturday Night Live. He developed material for several sketches and was the initial anchor for the Weekend Update section on Saturday Night Live.
