Life of Yann Sommer

Yann Sommer, born December 17, 1988, is a Swiss professional footballer who plays goalie for Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach and the Swiss national team.

Sommer joined the youth levels of Switzerland’s 20-time champions Basel in 2003. He signed his first professional contract two years later, at the age of 17, and following two years with the club’s U21 side, he was loaned to FC Vaduz in the second division to obtain senior experience.

The teenage goalkeeper appeared in 33 of 34 games and two more in UEFA Cup qualifying as Sommer and Vaduz won both the second division and promotion to the top tier.

After promotion, Sommer made another 17 appearances with the Lichtenstein-based club until Basel recalled their 20-year-old goaltender due to a goalkeeping shortage, giving Sommer the opportunity to eventually make his Basel debut with a six-game league run. A loan to Grasshopper Zurich followed in 2009/10, before Sommer clinched the No. 1 place in 2011/12.

Sommer made his senior international debut against Romania on May 30, 2012, after having played for Switzerland’s junior teams and becoming runner-up with the U21 side at the UEFA European U21 Championship in 2011.

Before joining Gladbach in the summer of 2014, he won four Swiss League titles with Basel, maintaining 65 clean sheets in 170 games. That followed a season in which Sommer made more saves than any of his contemporaries (126) and finished the year with the greatest save rate of any first-choice goalkeeper (75 per cent).

He is widely considered as one of the top goalkeepers in the Bundesliga. Currently, the Swiss, along with Liverpool’s Shaqiri, is one of the top players in the country. Sommer married Alina in August 2019, whom he began dating in 2016. Their daughter, Mila, was born on 4 November 2019.

Borussia Mönchengladbach

Early Career

Yann Sommer signed a five-year contract with German Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach on March 10, 2014, taking effect from July 1. He was brought in to replace Marc-André ter Stegen, who had left for Barcelona. Sommer’s first season at Mönchengladbach ended in third place in the Bundesliga, the club’s greatest league position since 1978.

The club also broke its previous mark of 17 consecutive matches without defeat, which it had accomplished during the 1970–71 season. Sommer made his DFB-Pokal debut against FC 08 Homburg, which Gladbach won 3–1. Sommer drew 1–1 with VfB Stuttgart on the first day of the season.

In a 1–0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund, he was memorably lobbed from long range by teammate Christoph Kramer, although Gladbach went on to secure qualifying for the UEFA Champions League with one match remaining. Sommer was awarded Gladbach’s player of the season at the end of the season.

2015- 2018

Gladbach started the 2015–16 season badly, losing 4–0 against Borussia Dortmund, with Sommer being blamed for the first goal. The team was rumoured to be in serious financial distress, and before the club’s first Champions League match of the season, the players conducted crisis meetings to discuss their issues. Sommer was widely chastised for his performance after losing 3–0 against Sevilla.

Lucien Favre resigned as coach of 1. FC Köln after their fifth consecutive Bundesliga defeat. In comparison to the previous year, it was Gladbach’s poorest start to a season.

The team has greatly improved under new interim manager André Schubert, with four victories from four matches, culminating in Schubert’s permanent appointment. Sommer was forced to miss the game against VfL Wolfsburg owing to a fractured nose, which he sustained in the Champions League against Manchester City. Tobias Sippel came in for him in the Wolfsburg game. Sommer finally played in all of the remaining Bundesliga games, and his performances piqued Manchester City’s interest.

However, Borussia Mönchengladbach finished fourth in the 2015–16 season and qualified for the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League, where they finished third in their group alongside Barcelona, Manchester City, and Celtic. They then advanced to the Europa League round of 16, where they were eliminated by Schalke 04 on the away goal rule following a 3–3 draw on aggregate.
