Indian billionaire banker Uday Kotak, who was born on March 15, 1959, serves as the managing director and executive vice chairman of Kotak Mahindra Bank. When India’s economy was still closed and experiencing slow growth in the early 1980s, Kotak chose to go it alone rather than accept a lucrative offer from a multinational.

He expanded his company into different financial services over the course of the following few years, becoming well-known in bill discounting, stockbroking, investment banking, auto financing, life insurance, and mutual funds. The Reserve Bank of India granted Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd. a banking licence on March 22, 2003, making it the first corporation in India’s corporate history to do so.

Anand Piramal Bio, Age, Wife, House, Business, Net Worth

Early Life

With 60 individuals living under one roof in a Gujarati upper-middle class joint family, Kotak was reared there.

Initially, the family engaged in combination trade. “Capitalism at work and Socialism at home,” he dubbed it. Cricket and playing the sitar had been his two hobbies. He acknowledged in a 2014 interview with NDTV that he had given up on sitar playing.

Uday Kotak Education

His job decision was influenced by his aptitude in mathematics. Sydenham College awarded him a bachelor’s degree, while Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies awarded him a master’s degree in management studies in 1982.

Also led the cricket team at his school as captain, and he participated in the Kagna League while at college. Kotak loves cricket a lot.

Uday Kotak Professional Life

Kotak founded Kotak Capital Management Finance Ltd. after earning his MBA (which later became Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd). He transformed a bill-discounting start-up into a financial services conglomerate with assets of US$19 billion (as of March 2014), the second largest scheduled commercial bank by market capitalization in India (private and PSU), and more than 1250 branches from a seed capital of less than US$80,000 borrowed from family and friends.

Following a $2.4 billion deal he completed in November 2014 to acquire rival ING Vysya Bank, which was partially owned by Dutch financial services giant ING, Kotak almost doubled his wealth during the year as shares of his Kotak Mahindra Bank reached an all-time high.

Uday seized the chance presented by Nelco’s need for working capital as a Tata subsidiary. By persuading his relatives and friends to contribute money to Nelco at an interest rate of 12 per cent, he established a small trade-finance company. He also gave Nelco short-term trade credit at a rate lower than the bank’s lending rate.

Following the success of this endeavour, Kotak expanded into bill discounting using the same guidelines. Then, in 1986, Uday started his business Kotak Mahindra with a Rs 30 lakhs initial investment and acquired a 50% ownership stake. Anand Mahindra put a significant amount of money into Uday’s company; as a result, Uday gave his financial company the name Kotak Mahindra.

In 2015, Kotak entered the general insurance industry and teamed up with Bharti Airtel, owned by telecom billionaire Sunil Mittal, to launch a small payments bank. The Kotak Mahindra Group has expanded over the years into a number of industries, including stock broking, investment banking, auto financing, life insurance, mutual funds, etc.

In order to comply with RBI instructions, Kotak must lower its ownership of Kotak Mahindra Bank to 20% from its current 30%. With a monthly compensation of 27 lakh (US$35,000), he was reportedly one of the highest-paid CEOs of any Indian bank in August 2019. For the 2020–21 fiscal year, he became the leader of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
