Rob Minkoff was born on August 11, 1962, in Palo Alto, California, in the United States. He attended Palo Alto High School as a teen before enrolling at the California Institute of the Arts in Santa Clarita. After graduating from the Department of Character Animation in the mid-1980s, he worked on numerous cartoons and movies.

While still a student at CalArts, Minkoff was hired as an in-between artist for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ film The Black Cauldron. Following that, he worked as a supervising animator on The Great Mouse Detective and then designed characters for The Brave Little Toaster. Minkoff did character animation for The Little Mermaid at the end of the decade and directed two Roger Rabbit short films, Tummy Trouble and Roller Coaster Rabbit, in 1989 and 1990. Following that, he worked on the pre-production writing for 1991’s Beauty and the Beast and directed the 1992 Mickey Mouse short Mickey’s Audition.

Rob received his big break in 1983 when Walt Disney Animation Studios hired him to work on the animated fantasy film The Black Cauldron. He worked as a supervising animator on the animated mystery adventure film The Great Mouse Detective in 1986. He was then hired as a character designer for the animated musical film The Brave Little Toaster.

His next project as a character animator was the 1989 release of the musical fantasy animated film The Little Mermaid. Following that, he directed two Roger Rabbit short films, Tummy Trouble in 1989 and Roller Coaster Rabbit in 1990. Rob also contributed animation concepts for the film Beauty and the Beast, as he was an important part of the pre-production script development.

Rob’s efforts were rewarded when he was given the opportunity to helm the animated musical drama film The Lion King. He co-directed the film with Roger Allers. The film went on to win two Academy Awards: Best Original Score and Best Original Song. Stuart Little, his next directorial effort, was released in 1999. The picture was his first live-action feature, and it was warmly received by audiences.

In 2002, Minkoff directed the second installment of the film Stuart Little 2. The film featured a mix of computer animation and live-action, and it was a huge success. In 2003, he directed The Haunted Mansion, another live-action film. In 2008, Rob released another box office hit, The Forbidden Kingdom. Jackie Chan and Jet Lee play the key roles in the film.

In 2011, Rob experimented with several film genres by directing Flypaper, a criminal comedy. However, the film did not perform well at the box office. Mr. Peabody & Sherman, a computer-animated comedy film, made his directorial debut in 2014. The film was a box office success, grossing $275.7 million worldwide.
