Nancy Kerrigan is an American actress and a recent figure-skating champion. She drew the US at various international skating championships and got a number of medals and accolades. Kerrigan was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts, the youngest child and only daughter of welder Daniel Kerrigan (1939–2010) and housewife Brenda Kerrigan. She is of English, Irish and German heritage, and has said: “There’s very small Irish in me, just my name.” While her brothers Michael and Mark operated hockey, she took up figure skating at age six. She did not begin private lessons until age eight and got her first competition, the Boston Open, at age nine.

Kerrigan’s family was of humble means. Kerrigan’s father sometimes managed three jobs to fund her skating career; he also made the ice resurfacer at the local course in exchange for Nancy’s lessons. Kerrigan was taught by Theresa Martin until she was 16, then started working with Evy and Mary Scotvold after a brief time with Denise Morrissey. The Scotvolds continued her coaches through the rest of her competitive career.

Controversy: Not a Nice Girl?

The innocent, squeaky clean image that Kerrigan had following the offensive attack was tainted right after the Olympics when cameras captured her complaining about her gold medalist rival Oksana Baiul. “Oh, come on. So she’s going to get out here and cry again. What’s the difference?” Kerrigan had stated, as she wrongly assumed she was waiting for Baiul to get a touch up for the Olympic ceremony.

Attaching to that, soon after Kerrigan was also made decrying her participation in a Disney Parade. “This is so corny,” she was caught speaking on the mic, as she sat next to Mickey Mouse. “This is so stupid. I hate it. This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.”

But many people came to her defense. “I think she’s puzzled,” producer Steve Tisch told, who was working on her television biopic at the time. “I don’t believe Nancy, under the conditions, had the time or ability to be schooled in dealing with a celebrity because it came on so fast.
