Football Career

Club Career

Luke Shaw joined the Southampton Academy at the age of seven in 2002, and by the age of 15, he was a regular in the under-18 team. In September 2011, he made his debut appearance for the first team as an unused replacement in a League Cup match against Preston North End.

During the January 2012 transfer window, Premier League teams Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City were rumoured to be interested in acquiring 16-year-old Shaw, with the then-Championship club apparently valuing the defender at £4 million. However, Southampton replied promptly to such rumours, with then-manager Nigel Adkins telling the media that “Luke Shaw is a vital part of our future plans.”

Shaw made his first team debut for Southampton at the age of 16 on 28 January 2012 in the FA Cup, replacing winger Jason Puncheon for the last 13 minutes of the 1–1 draw with Millwall. Shaw, along with Jack Stephens, Calum Chambers, and James Ward-Prowse, was one of four young players granted professional contracts following the club’s promotion to the Premier League in May 2012.

In August 2012, he got his first start for the Southampton first team, playing the full 90 minutes of a 4–1 League Cup victory over Stevenage.

He became the youngest Southampton player to start a Premier League match when he was selected to play at left-back against Swansea City on 10 November 2012, completing 74 minutes of the 1–1 draw.

Luke Shaw continued to play regularly throughout the season, and in Southampton manager Nigel Adkins’ final match as Southampton manager on 16 January 2013, he put up the second goal in a 2–2 draw away to Chelsea, sending a cross from the left wing for Jason Puncheon to finish in the 75th minute.

He was involved in a collision with striker Grant Holt in an away encounter against Norwich City in March 2013, which resulted in surrendering a penalty in the first minute of injury time at the conclusion of the match, however Artur Boruc saved the next spot kick to ensure the match ended goalless. Shaw ended his first professional season with Southampton with 28 games, including 25 in the Premier League.

Luke Shaw signed a new five-year deal with Southampton on his 18th birthday, July 12, 2013. Shaw scored once during Southampton’s preseason practises, the latest in an 8–0 triumph over Spanish club Palamós on July 20, 2013.

Shaw was personally involved in the goal that saw Southampton win against West Bromwich Albion in the first match of the 2013–14 season when he was fouled in the penalty box by Youssouf Mulumbu in the 89th minute, with Rickie Lambert scoring the following spot kick to see the Saints edge victory.

Luke Shaw was chosen one of six players on the PFA Young Player of the Year shortlist on April 18, 2014. He was also named to the PFA Team of the Year in 2013–14.

He signed a four-year deal (with an option to extend for another year) with Manchester United on June 27, 2014, for an unknown cost believed to be in the region of £30 million, making him the most expensive teenager in world football. Chelsea were also interested in Shaw, but they backed out of a deal for fear of causing discord in their dressing room due to the teenager’s high price demands.

Luke Shaw after signing for Manchester United

He made his debut during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, appearing in the opening 45 minutes of a 7–0 triumph over the LA Galaxy. He had a hamstring injury at the start of the season, which kept him out for a month.

Luke Shaw was picked as a substitute for Manchester United for the first time on 14 September 2014 in their fourth league match, against Queens Park Rangers, and was unused as they won their first victory of the season. Shaw made his competitive debut for United on September 27, 2014, playing the full 2–1 home triumph over West Ham United after being an unused replacement in the previous defeat to Leicester City.

In October 2014, Shaw was selected to the 40-man shortlist for the 2014 Golden Boy award, which is presented to the finest European-based player under the age of 21.

Luke Shaw was sent off on February 8, 2015, after earning a second yellow card in a 1–1 tie with West Ham. He returned to the starting lineup on April 18, 2015, replacing the injured Daley Blind. Shaw’s first action since March 9, 2015, resulted in a 1–0 loss to league leaders Chelsea, although he put forth a decent effort that captain Wayne Rooney applauded.

Luke Shaw started every league match in the early 2015–16 season until 15 September 2015, when he was caught by Héctor Moreno with a slide tackle during the opening match of the Champions League group stage against PSV and sustained a double leg fracture.

During the nine-minute halt in Eindhoven, Shaw was given oxygen and treated by nine medical personnel before being carried off on a stretcher and sent to hospital. Shaw was out for six months before returning to training on April 4, 2016.

Luke Shaw made his first competitive game since sustaining a double leg fracture in September 2015, as Manchester United defeated Leicester City 2–1 to win the 2016 FA Community Shield.

He scored his first senior goal against Leicester City on August 10, 2018, as Manchester United triumphed 2–1. Shaw was also named the season’s first player of the month in August and September. He agreed to a new five-year deal with United.

Luke Shaw was named United’s player of the month for March on April 2nd, giving him a total of three for the season. Shaw was named Manchester United’s Player of the Year and Sir Matt Busby’s Player of the Year at the end of the season. Shaw scored his sole goal of the season in a 3–0 FA Cup triumph over Derby County on March 5, 2020.

International Career

Luke Shaw’s first taste of international football came in 2011, when he appeared six times for England’s under-16 team. He made his debut against Slovenia in February, then went on to compete in the Montaigu Tournament in April, where he scored his first international goal against Uruguay.

He later made his debut for the under-17 squad against Italy in August, and he appeared in eight matches during his seven-month spell with the national team.

Luke Shaw was due to be called up for the first time to the England under-21 squad in January 2013, for a friendly against Sweden the following month, with then-manager Stuart Pearce describing the Southampton defender as “an amazing potential.”

However, owing to an injury sustained during training, Luke Shaw was forced to withdraw from the match. The uncapped defender was then called up for matches against Romania on 21 March, Austria on 25 March, and Scotland on 13 August, as well as the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, all of which he had to cancel due to the same injury.

On 5 September, he made his England under-21 debut against Moldova in a 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying match, and he also played the full 90 minutes of England’s second qualification match against Finland on 9 September.

Luke Shaw was called up to the England senior team for the first time on February 27, 2014, for a friendly against Denmark. He made his debut in the match, coming on at halftime to replace Ashley Cole. England won the game by a score of 1–0. Shaw was included to Roy Hodgson’s 23-man team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on May 12, 2014.

He was included at the cost of the more experienced Cole, who subsequently withdrew from internationals. Shaw was England’s backup left-back behind Leighton Baines, and he made his tournament debut in the final group encounter, a 0–0 draw with Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte. He also bears the distinction of being the tournament’s youngest participant in 2014.

Luke was named to England’s team for UEFA Euro 2020. Shaw scored the fastest goal in a European Championship final against Italy in the UEFA Euro 2020 Final on July 11, 2021, with only two minutes on the clock. However, his early goal was unable to win England their first major trophy in 55 years, as Italy won a penalty shootout after a 1–1 tie in extra time.
