Club Career

Hossein Kanani Zadegan began working with Persepolis in January 2012. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the club through the conclusion of the 2013–14 season. He made his Persepolis debut as a starter against Foolad in the last match of the 2011–12 Iran Pro League. Hossein competed in the AFC Vision Asia U21 Tehran Premier League for Persepolis U21.

Kanaani was loaned out to Portuguese club Beira Mar in August 2013. However, owing to work visa complications, he was forced to return to Iran without playing a single match. In the summer of 2014, he joined Malavan on a two–year loan to complete his conscription time. Kanaani scored Malavan’s first goal in a 1–1 tie with Esteghlal.

Hossein Kanani Zadegan was expected to return to his original club Persepolis in May 2016, after finishing his two–year conscription spell at Malvan. Kanaani, on the other hand, turned down Persepolis’ offer and joined their rivals Esteghlal. 

Kanani Zadegan sustained a season-ending injury shortly after joining the club, after just playing two games. Esteghlal terminated him at the end of the season after just playing two games for the club.

Hossein spent the 2017–18 season with Saipa FC. He then signed with Machine Sazi for the 2018–19 season. Kanani appeared in 27 games and scored one goal for Machine Sazi F.C. in the 2018–19 Persian Gulf Pro League season.

International Career

Hossein Kanani Zadegan competed in two matches for Iran at the Asian U16 Championships in 2010.

He started all four games for the 2012 Asian U19 Championship Qualifiers, contributing to the team’s clean sheet in each of them. During the Championships, he began Iran’s opening game, assisting Team Meli in keeping a clean sheet and even striking the bar from 30 meters out. 

Kanani played for Iran U–20 at the 2012 AFC U-19 Championship qualifying, the 2012 CIS Cup, the 2012 AFF U-19 Youth Championship, and the 2012 AFC U-19 Championship.

Nelo Vingada invited him to the Iran U23 training camp in preparation for Incheon 2014 and the AFC U-22 Championships in 2016, which were also the Summer Olympic qualifiers. He was nominated to Iran’s final U23 roster for Incheon 2014.

On June 11, 2015, Kanani Zadegan made his debut against Uzbekistan in a friendly match while on June 16, 2015, he again played against Turkmenistan. But he could not score his first goal for Iran in a long time. 

It was not until October 2019 that he scored his debut goal for the squad as the third goal in a 14-0 hammering of Cambodia in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers. On March 30, 2021, he scored his second goal for the team with a header against Syria.
