Kalidou Koulibaly, a professional football player for Chelsea of the Premier League and the Senegal national team, was born on June 20, 1991. He plays center-defender.
After beginning his professional club career in 2010 with the French team Metz, Koulibaly transferred to the Belgian club Genk in 2012, where he won the Belgian Cup in his debut year. In addition to winning the Supercoppa Italiana in 2014 and the Coppa Italia in 2020, he joined the Italian side Napoli in 2014.
Koulibaly was initially a member of the France national under-20 squad since he was born in France to Senegalese parents, making him qualified to represent both countries at the international level. Later, in 2015, he made his Senegal senior debut, and in 2017, he was a member of the Senegal team that competed in the Africa Cup of Nations.
The following year, he was selected for the team that represented Senegal in the FIFA World Cup, and he then led his team to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final. Senegal, led by Koulibaly, defeated Egypt in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final to claim the title.
Koulibaly was born to Senegalese parents in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, France, on June 20, 1991. Before he had enough money to send his mother to France, his father spent five years working seven days a week in a textile mill in Senegal.
He says he was raised in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges and that: “When you are raised in such a setting, everyone becomes your brother. We are all French, despite the fact that we are black, white, Arab, African, Muslim, and Christians. Let’s all go out for a Turkish supper because we are all hungry. Or perhaps tonight we can all have Senegalese food at my place. Despite our differences, we are all on an equal footing.”
Koulibaly explained how he got into football, saying: “I don’t know why, but I was incredibly irritated that all the kids were going about playing football without any shoes. According to my mother, I begged her to buy shoes for everyone so I could play football with them. However, my mother instructed Kaliou to remove his shoes. Come play with them.” The beginning of my football narrative occurs when I finally took off my shoes and went to play barefoot with my relatives. I was playing every day in the small park outside our house when we returned to France.”
It was revealed that Koulibaly has been made an honorary citizen of Naples in May 2019. He was previously recognized as a Saint-Dié-des-Vosges honorary citizen in April 2015. Koulibaly is so well-liked in Naples that a businessman named a pizza after him, and Koulibaly has expressed his love for the city.
He claims that his name came from the Quran and is a Muslim. Koulibaly is a French speaker who also converses in English and Italian.
Koulibaly spoke out against racism in Italian football for the whole of his stay at Napoli. He urged the Italian football authorities to combat racism by barring offenders from accessing stadiums for the rest of their lives in October 2019. In January of that year, he had earlier criticized the Italian football authorities for doing nothing to combat racism.
In June 2021, while on vacation in Senegal, Koulibaly worked with several local organizations to support underprivileged children and organized the arrival of a ship carrying sanitary tools and basic necessities from the port of Naples. He has also been involved in a number of other initiatives to help the poor in Naples and his motherland.
Before joining the youth system of the professional club Metz on July 1, 2009, Koulibaly began his career playing for the youth squad of his local club SR Saint-Dié. He did so for two seasons while competing for the club in the Championnat de France Amateur 2.
During his time at Metz, Koulibaly contributed to the club’s under-19 team’s victory over Sochaux in the 2009–10 Coupe Gambardella. He also participated in 15 matches for the club’s amateur squad in the Championnat de France Amateur as Metz won the league with a final score of 107 points.
Koulibaly signed his first professional contract, a one-year agreement, before the 2010–11 season began. The new manager Dominique Bijotat then elevated him to the senior team. On August 20, 2010, Koulibaly made his professional debut in a league game against Vannes. He participated in a 1-0 triumph as a substitute.
After displacing Nuno Frechaut, Koulibaly started playing for the first team on a regular basis. He scored his first goal for FC Metz on April 15, 2011, in a 3-3 draw with Clermont. Koulibaly extended his agreement with the team for an additional three years, keeping him on board through 2014.
His first year at FC Metz was summarised by Manager Bijotat as follows: “Although I was personally the least shocked by Kalidou Koulibaly, he or she may have astonished the most people. I anticipated that he would get it because it was already displaying excellent maturity. He never loses his cool, and that is crucial to the work he is doing. He is always in the correct frame of mind. In order to maintain some consistency in his performances, he also understands how to evaluate his own matches. He needed more time to decide on the squad. His game was not settled; despite recent improvement, he still needs to win consistently.”
Koulibaly signed a four-year deal and joined Belgian club Genk on June 29, 2012. On August 23, he played his first game for Genk, who lost to Swiss side Luzern 2-1 in the first leg of a two-leg match in a UEFA Europa League play-off qualifying round.
Since joining the squad, he has established himself as a first-team regular, primarily playing center defense. On November 25, 2012, during a game against OH Leuven, Koulibaly committed a foul in the penalty area. Ibou then successfully converted the foul, resulting in a 1-1 draw for Genk.
In order to make up for his error, Koulibaly scored his first goal for Racing Genk in a 4-2 loss against Anderlecht at home on December 23, 2012. He did so by scoring a free header from a corner. After starting the entire game to defeat Cercle Brugge, he then assisted Genk in winning the 2012–13 Belgian Cup. Koulibaly made 46 appearances before the conclusion of the 2012–13 season, scoring once across all competitions.
Koulibaly signed a four-year contract with Premier League team Chelsea on July 16, 2022, for an estimated sum of £33 million. He made his Chelsea debut against Everton on August 6 in a 1-0 away league victory. On August 14, Koulibaly made his home debut for Chelsea and scored his first goal with a stunning volley in a 2-2 league tie with London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Koulibaly qualified for dual citizenship because he was born and reared in France by Senegalese parents. Beginning in 2011, he competed for the French under-20 squad, appearing six times during the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia.
Koulibaly joined the Senegal national football team in early September 2015, despite Didier Deschamps’ desire in calling him up to the Les Bleus. “I don’t have any regrets,” he subsequently said in a statement outlining his choice, “because I want to write the tale of the future of Senegal football and I think I’ll be able to achieve that.”
On September 5, 2015, Koulibaly made his AFCON qualifying debut against Namibia in a 2-0 win. He participated in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations as a member of the Senegal team.
He was included in Senegal’s 23-man roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in May of that year. Senegal was ousted in the group stage of the competition after becoming the first team in FIFA World Cup history to be eliminated due to fair play tiebreaker regulations, and Koulibaly participated in all three games.
He was selected for Senegal’s 23-man squad in January 2022 for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. Senegal won it and helped his country in the final by scoring the first penalty against Egypt (0-0, 4-2 after penalty shootout).
