Football Career

Club Career

After playing for Stourbridge, Jude Bellingham joined Birmingham City as an under-8. At 14, he played for their under-18 squad, and at 15, he made his debut for their under-23 team against Nottingham Forest’s U23s. He scored the game’s sole goal in the 87th minute after “sliding in to push the ball across the goal line after pressure by Kyle McFarlane on the keeper redirected the ball into his path.”

By March 2019, he had three goals from 10 development squad games, had been named one of the “50 most fascinating adolescents in English football” by FourFourTwo, and had been noted as being of interest to large European teams.

While still a schoolboy, he was progressively introduced to the first-team atmosphere, gradually working with the seniors, accompanying them on matchday to watch, and travelling as the “19th man” for a Championship match in March.

Bellingham has accepted a two-year scholarship with Birmingham City, which will begin in July 2019. He participated in the first-team training camp in Portugal, scored in pre-season friendly, and was assigned squad number 22 for the 2019–20 season.

Jude Bellingham became Birmingham City’s youngest ever first-team player on August 6, when he started the EFL Cup first round trip to Portsmouth. At 16 years and 38 days, he broke Trevor Francis’ 1970 record by 101 days.

He was named Birmingham Mail’s man of the match after playing 80 minutes in the 3–0 loss. He made his Football League debut 19 days later, as a second-half replacement in a 3–0 loss away to Swansea City, and his home debut on August 31 against Stoke City. After replacing the injured Jefferson Montero after half an hour, Bellingham scored the game-winning goal.

Although it was by a fortunate deflection – as Birmingham fought back from a 1–0 deficit to defeat Stoke 2–1, becoming the club’s youngest ever goalscorer at the age of 16 years and 63 days. Two weeks later, he started against Charlton Athletic and scored the lone goal from Kerim Mrabti’s cutback.

Jude Bellingham remained a consistent fixture in the matchday squad, occasionally as a substitute but mostly as a starter. He was introduced to the squad on the left flank, then moved to centre midfield “where he could acquire more confidence,” and then utilised “in a more advanced role” after the coaching staff was certain he could handle the job.

He was named the EFL Young Player of the Month in November 2019. Bellingham “feels more comfortable in midfield, and more comfortable when he can come closer to the opponent box,” according to head coach Pep Clotet.

In January 2020, he was linked with transfers to a number of top clubs; on deadline day, Birmingham were said to have refused down a £20 million deal from Manchester United.

Jude Bellingham remained a first-team regular, and by the time the season was halted due to the COVID-19 epidemic, he had appeared in 32 league games. He remained an important member of the club once the season started behind closed doors.

Jude put up a late equaliser for Lukas Jutkiewicz against Charlton Athletic, which helped Birmingham’s league position with two games remaining. He concluded the season with four goals in 44 appearances in all competitions, 41 of which were in the league, as Birmingham avoided relegation despite losing the last match of the season.

In recognition of what Bellingham accomplished in such a short time with the first squad, the club stated that his number 22 shirt will be retired, “to honour one of our own and to encourage others.” He was named Championship Apprentice of the Year and EFL Young Player of the Season at the EFL Awards.

Jude Bellingham had long been expected to leave Birmingham, and it was claimed that he and his father had visited many prominent clubs, including Manchester United and Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund, impressed by their track record of featuring young players as regulars in the first squad, as proven by the likes of Jadon Sancho, became his preferred destination.

He travelled to Germany for a medical, and the move was finalised on July 20, 2020, with him joining following Birmingham’s final match of the season. Sky Sports said that the secret cost was an initial £25 million, making him the most expensive 17-year-old in history, plus “many million more” based on performance-related criteria.

Jude Bellingham made his debut on 14 September 2020, starting the opening match of Dortmund’s 2020–21 season in the DFB-Pokal against third-tier MSV Duisburg at the age of 17 years, 77 days. After half an hour, he scored the second goal in a 5–0 victory, becoming the club’s youngest DFB-Pokal goalscorer.

He surpassed Giovanni Reyna’s record by six days, as well as became their youngest scorer in any competitive match, beating Nuri ahin’s record by five days. Five days later, he made his Bundesliga debut, assisting Reyna’s first goal in a 3–0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach, and was voted September’s Bundesliga Rookie of the Month.

Bellingham became the youngest Englishman to start a Champions League match when he faced Lazio in the group stage on 20 October, at the age of 17 years and 113 days, beating Phil Foden’s previous record.

Jude Bellingham was a regular in all competitions throughout the first three months of the season, making six starts and seven substitute appearances in the Bundesliga and four Champions League starts. With a foot ailment, he missed the opening two games of 2021, but he returned to the lineup as an increasingly frequent starter.

In the away leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City, he assisted Marco Reus’ goal but was denied a goal himself when the referee called a foul on him after he regained the ball when Ederson miscontrolled a back-pass. Although replays revealed no violation, the video assistance referee (VAR) system was unable to intervene since the whistle blew before the ball entered the empty net.

After 15 minutes of the second leg, he “showed tremendous control as he grabbed on a loose ball and smartly altered feet to clip a shot into the top corner,” but Dortmund could not maintain their away-goal advantage.

In the meanwhile, Jude Bellingham equalised with VfB Stuttgart early in the second half after scoring his first Bundesliga goal after Reyna’s knock-down; Dortmund won 3–2. Bellingham made his debut in Dortmund’s 4–1 triumph over RB Leipzig in the 2021 DFB-Pokal Final.

He received a yellow card in the first half and was replaced by Thorgan Hazard at halftime, with his side leading 3–0. He concluded the season with 29 Bundesliga games and one goal, 46 appearances and four goals in all competitions, and was awarded Newcomer of the Season by his teammates.

Jude Bellingham finished second to Pedri of Barcelona in the 2021 Kopa Trophy, which is given to the best under-21 male player as chosen on by past Ballon d’Or winners. Bellingham took part in Der Klassiker versus Bayern Munich on December 4th.

He assisted on both Dortmund goals, but Bayern triumphed 3–2 thanks to a 77th-minute penalty granted after extensive VAR intervention. Earlier in the game, referee Felix Zwayer denied two Dortmund penalty requests, refusing to reconsider either.

Jude Bellingham was interviewed live by Viaplay shortly after the game and was critical of Zwayer’s actions, referencing his role in the 2005 German football match-fixing incident, saying: “You hand over the greatest game in Germany to a referee who has already ruined the match. What do you anticipate?” The DFB replied to Bellingham, requesting his thoughts as soon as possible. The German Football Association later fined him €40,000.

International Career

In December 2016, Jude Bellingham earned his England under-15 debut against Turkey. He received a Special Achievement Award at the 2018 Birmingham City Academy awards night in appreciation of his captaincy of that squad throughout the 2017–18 season.

By the end of 2018, he has made his debut for England’s under-16 squad, appearing in eleven games, scoring four goals, and captaining the team. He was named to England’s under-17 squad for the Syrenka Cup in September 2019, a friendly competition staged in preparation for the 2020 European Championship qualifiers the following March.

He made his tournament debut as a substitute in England’s opening match, a 5–0 triumph over Finland in which he scored the third goal, and led the team in their second encounter, a 4–2 win against Austria to qualify for the final. Bellingham scored the third goal once more.

He kept his leadership for the final, which England won on penalties after a 2–2 stalemate, and was voted player of the tournament. Jude Bellingham gained his first call-up to the under-21 squad in September 2020 for European Championship qualifications against Kosovo and Austria.

He became England U21’s youngest player when he came in to replace Tom Davies after 62 minutes of the match against Kosovo on 4 September, with England leading 3–0, and scored after 85 minutes to secure the 6–0 triumph.

Bellingham was called up to the England senior squad for the first time in November 2020, following the withdrawals of James Ward-Prowse and Trent Alexander-Arnold due to injury. On November 12, he made his debut in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley Stadium, replacing Mason Mount after 73 minutes of a 3–0 victory. At 17 years and 136 days, he became England’s third-youngest full international, after only Theo Walcott and Wayne Rooney.

Jude Bellingham has been nominated to England’s team for the UEFA Euro 2020 competition, which has been postponed until June 2021 because to the COVID-19 epidemic.

When he came on as an 82nd-minute substitute in England’s opening match, a 1–0 win over Croatia at Wembley on 13 June, he became both the youngest Englishman to play at any major tournament and the youngest player of any nationality to play at a European Championship; the latter record was broken just six days later by Poland’s Kacper Kozowski.
