Donald Glover, better known by his stage names Childish Gambino and mcDJ, is a versatile writer, actor, singer, comedian, filmmaker, and producer. He is best known for the series Atlanta which earned him 2 Golden Globe Awards and two Prime Time Awards. The series was a commercial success and Glover gained a lot of critical claims for his writing, directing, producing, and acting in the series.  Glover’s work includes Magic Mike XXL in 2015, Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, and The Martian in 2015. In the famous movie Solo: A Star Wars Story he played the role of young Lando Calrissian, and in a movie adaptation of The Lion King, Glover offered the voice of Simba in 2019.

Glover joined the writing team of the NBC sitcom 30 Rock in 2006, while still staying in the NYU dormitories, just at age of 23, for which he got a Writers Guild of America nomination in 2009. He had many cameos in front of the camera and was later recognized as an executive story editor. He departed 30 Rock in 2009 to star opposite Joel McHale and Chevy Chase in the comedy series Community, in which he portrayed an athlete in an unusual study group.

Life Journey

Glover was born on the 25th of September 1983 in California’s Edwards Air Force Base and grew up in Stone Mountain, Georgia. His mom, Beverly, managed a childcare facility, and Donald Glover, his dad, is a mail carrier. Stephen Glover, his younger brother, is also a filmmaker and screenwriter.

Glover went to Lakeside High School and DeKalb School of the Arts. Following that he attended the Tisch School of Arts at New York University to earn a degree in Dramatic Writing and graduated from NYU in  2006.  He self-produced the unofficial mixtape The Younger I Get while still at Tisch, which was never published and eventually repudiated by Glover as being the too-raw ranting of a decrepit Drake.  Under the pseudonym mcDJ (formerly MC D), he began DJing and creating electronic music, remixing the album Illinois by Sufjan Stevens.

Glover was recruited as a writer for the NBC comedy 30 Rock at the age of 23 after working on Derrick Comedy while attending New York University. From 2009 until 2014, he was most known for his role as Troy Barnes, a college student on the NBC comedy Community. Glover has starred in the FX series Atlanta, which he developed and occasionally directs, since 2016. Glover has received several awards for his performance on Atlanta, including two Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards.

  • After receiving several Derrick Comedy videos from none other than Amy Poehler, 30 Rock executive producer David Miner reached out to Glover to set up a meeting with Tina Fey. Despite the fact that he and the program won several accolades during Donald’s two years as a screenwriter, he decided to leave 30 Rock to follow his many other projects and goals.
