Early life

Delonte West was born on July 26, 1983, in Washington, D.C., to Dmitri and Delphina West. Delonte’s childhood wasn’t exactly perfect because he grew up in poverty. While his parents divorced when he was a child, he and his family were forced to move to a low-income neighbourhood. West attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, where he was a standout basketball player, joining up with future NBA star Eddie Basden. He guided the Roosevelt Raiders to their first appearance in the state tournament.

Delonte got 22 points and 8 rebounds in the Maryland 4A championship game, but the Raiders lost 70–58. With averages of 20.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.1 steals per game, he was voted Washington Post All-Met Basketball Player of the Year.

College Education

West was appointed the starting point guard by head coach Doc Rivers at the start of the 2005–06 season after making the move to point guard in his rookie season.

West averaged 11.8 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game, and 4.6 assists per game in 2005–06.
