As a member of the Costa Rican national football team, Borges is frequently regarded as one of the most intelligent players. Antonio Alfaro of La Nación referred to him as “the archetypal Costa Rican player,” while Diego Torres of El Pas labeled him “the brain of Costa Rica” and “a creative midfielder with lovely diction.” Borges speaks English, Portuguese, and Swedish in addition to his native Spanish.

On January 15, 2006, Borges, being 18 years old, made his professional debut with Saprissa. Together with Saprissa, he captured five national titles.
When Borges’ contract with Saprissa expired on July 1, 2009, Fredrikstad FK’s sports director Tor-Kristian Karlsen stated that Borges had signed for them.
Later, Fredrikstad agreed to pay Deportivo Saprissa 1 million kroner (125,000 euros) so Borges could join the squad right away and play for Fredrikstad when the season began on April 14 against the reigning league champion Stabaek. Borges said in March 2011 that he will depart Fredrikstad either during or after the 2011 campaign.
On January 1, 2012, it was made official that Borges, a free agent, will sign a three-year deal with Swedish soccer team AIK Stockholm after departing Fredrikstad FK. Martin Kayongo-former Mutumba’s number 10 jersey was given to him.

He served as the team’s striker for the first half of the season under manager Andreas Alm. But following the summer break, he slid down and began to play as a central midfielder, and as a result, he became the team’s first pick at that position.
Deportivo La Coruña
Borges signed a contract with Deportivo de La Corua on January 14, 2015, committing to play for them through the conclusion of the current campaign with a two-year extension option. He started in a 1-2 away win over Rayo Vallecano on January 30, which served as his La Liga debut, and scored twice in his first official game for Dépor.
With 153 caps and 27 goals, Borges now leads the national football team’s appearance record. He has played for his nation in more than 50 FIFA World Cup qualifying games, as well as at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cup finals. Borges played a key role in the country’s dismal 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign. He later assisted the squad in placing second at the 2011 Copa Centroamericana and reaching the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals. Borges was selected for the Costa Rican World Cup team in June 2014.
In a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Greece in the round of 16, Borges was the first of five Costa Rican players to make a kick that was successful. He was included in Costa Rica’s 23-man roster in May 2018 for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
