Comedy Career

Burnham recorded himself performing two songs in 2006 and uploaded them to YouTube for the very first moment, ostensibly to discuss with his family. They quickly gained popularity on YouTube, Break.com, and other websites. As his popularity grew, he continued to post self-described “pubescent musical comedy,” supporting himself on guitar or electronic keyboard on music and videos online.

His home-released movies were all self-recorded in and around his family house and bedroom in Hamilton, MA, and had a deliberate DIY, even voyeuristic vibe to them. Burnham’s on-stage demeanour is described as a “more pompous, stalled version [of] himself.”

Burnham, who was 17 at the time, filmed a monologue in London for Comedy Central’s The World Stands Up in January 2008, which aired in June 2008, making him the youngest performer to do so. On June 17, 2008, they published Burnham’s debut EP, the six-song “Bo Fo Sho,” as an online-only record.

On March 10, 2009, he released his debut album, “Bo Burnham.” He went on to play his songs all around the United States, as well as in London and Montreal. Owing to his utilisation of homophobic and racist language in shows, fifteen Westminster College students (students of the university’s Gay-Straight Alliance, Black Students Association, International Club, and Cultural Diversity Organization) opposed his performance there that evening on March 3, 2009.

After his presentation of “Bo Burnham: Words, Words, Words” in August 2010, he was nominated for Best Comedy Show at the 2010 Edinburgh Comedy Festival.

He was awarded the Panel Prize, a £5,000 prize for “the production or performer that best represented the spirit of the 2010 Fringe.” Burnham also authored, executive produced, and performed in “Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous” in 2010. The show was not renewed for a second season and was cancelled on June 26, 2013. Burnham placed first in the 2011 Comedy Central Stand Up ShowDown.

Burnham was cast as Boston Celtics star Larry Bird in Adam McKay’s untitled HBO television drama inspired by Jeff Pearlman’s book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s” in 2021.

Burnham recorded his debut one-hour stand-up special, “Words Words Words,” for Comedy Central on May 21, 2010 at the House of Blues in Boston. On October 16, 2010, it premiered on Comedy Central and was published on October 18, 2010. In December 2013, his second special, “What,” was published on Netflix and YouTube.

“Make Happy,” Burnham’s third special, was launched on June 3, 2016. Burnham stated on social media in April 2021 that he will broadcast a new Netflix comedy special called “Bo Burnham: Inside” on May 30, which he recorded entirely alone in a room of his house with no staff or audience amid the COVID-19 epidemic. It received widespread critical acclaim and a constrained film adaptation.

Aside from performing, Burnham has brought Netflix comedy shows, “Jerrod Carmichael: 8” in 2017 and “Chris Rock: Tambourine” in 2018. Burnham’s contribution to the songs for the theatrical “Sesame Street” movie featuring Anne Hathaway was revealed in 2019.
