Life Journey

Alka Yagnik did her schooling at Modern High School for Girls in Kolkata, India. She started singing for Akashvani (All India Radio) at the age of 6, where she interpreted devotional songs for the radio. She came to Mumbai, at the age of 10 as a child singer. Initially, her voice was rejected on the pretext of being too soft and immature, and was asked to wait for her voice to get matured.

In 1979, Alka Yagnik began her Bollywood profession, singing only a few rows in Rasjshri’s song “Payal ki Jhankar”. Followed by “Mere Angne Mein,” which proved to be a mega-hit. Her first solo track was “Hum Turn Rahenge” for Rajesh Roshan in Hamari Bahu Alka (1982). She finally got her first breakthrough with the song “Ek Do Teen” from the movie Tezaab.

Alka Yagnik has sung in many languages other than Hindi-Urdu, including Assamese, Awadhi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, English, Gujarati, Malayalam, Marathi, Meitei, Odia, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Tamil, and Telugu. She has also done many live concerts around the world. In an interview with Mid Day, she said that she records five songs daily during her time.

In the year 1993, Alka sang a seductive song “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” with Ila Arun. The song produced disputes because of the lyrics printed by Anand Bakshi. Alka took a 2nd Filmfare honor for the song, which she shared with Ila Arun.

In 1994, she sang the song “Din Mein Leti Hai” from the film Amanaat with co-singer Kumar Sanu and Ila Arun, composed by Bappi Lahiri and lyrics by Anwar Sagar. Besides the duet variant, With Ila Arun, Alka also sang the female variant of the song. She has done numerous shows with Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Kalyanji-Anandji.

In the songs “Tum Aaye” and “Shairana” she has a close collaboration with award-winning lyricist singer Hariharan and Javed Akhtar. She has also done the Hanuman Chalisa and several devotional songs. In 2012 she along with Sonu Nigam sang a song ‘Shiksha Ka Suraj’ as part of the National Literacy Mission of India for which she was felicitated by Union Minister For Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal. On the occasion of 100 years of Hindi Cinema in 2012, her song “Taal Se Taal Mila” from the film Taal was voted as the best song of the century in a survey conducted by Hindustan Times, DesiMartini, and Fever 104. Also, her song “Choli Ke Peeche” from the movie Khalnayak was voted as the hottest song of the century in a poll conducted by Sanona.

Yagnik has also been involved in various projects to empower girls. In 2014, Yagnik again teamed up with Sonu Nigam to sing the song “Phool Khil Jayenge” for child health awareness. She also sang a song titled “Maine Li Jo Angdai” for the album Women’s Day Special: Spreading Melodies Everywhere. It was composed by Farid Sabri, Harish Chauhan, and Gurudatt Sahil; and penned by Sudhakar Sharma.
