Early life and Education

In a Marwadi Hindu household, Mittal was born. From 1957 to 1964, he attended Shri Daulatram Nopany Vidyalaya in Calcutta. He earned a B.Com degree in the top class from St. Xavier’s College, which is connected to the University of Calcutta.

Mohanlal Mittal, the father of Lakshmi, was the owner of Nippon Denaro Ispat, a steel company. Due to the Indian government’s restriction on steel production, Mittal, then 26 years old, established his first steel mill, PT Ispat Indo, in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, in 1976.

Anupam Mittal Biography, Age, Wife, Investments, Net Worth

Lakshmi Mittal Personal life and Family

In a Rajasthani Marwari household in Sadulpur, Rajasthan, Mittal was born on June 15, 1950. Usha is the wife he has. Aditya Mittal, a boy, and Vanisha Mittal, a girl, are their children. Lakshmi Mittal has a sister named Seema Lohia who wed an Indonesian businessman named Sri Prakash Lohia, as well as two brothers named Pramod Mittal and Vinod Mittal.

At the time of his 2004 acquisition from Formula One CEO Bernie Ecclestone for £67 million (US$128 million), his mansion at 18-19 Kensington Palace Gardens was the most expensive house in the whole world. Marble from the same quarry that provided marble for the Taj Mahal is used to embellish the home. The ostentatious display of riches is known as the “Taj Mittal.”

In 2001, six years after it opened, it was shut down, making roughly 400 workers redundant. Environmental problems that have since occurred at the site have drawn criticism. The Irish government requested a ruling from the High Court. There are 12 bedrooms, a Turkish bath, an indoor pool, and 20 car parking spaces. He eats just vegetarian food.

For £70 million, Mittal purchased No. 9A Palace Greens, Kensington Gardens, previously the Philippines Embassy, in 2008 for his daughter Vanisha Mittal, who is wed to businessman and philanthropist Amit Bhatia. In the French palace of Versailles, Mittal hosted Vanisha to a spectacular “vegetarian reception.”

In addition, he spent $30 million in 2005 to purchase and renovate a colonial villa at No. 22 Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road in New Delhi, one of India’s most affluent avenues home to embassies and billionaires. Shrishti Mittal, a niece of Mittal, wed investment banker Gulraj Behl in December 2013 after a three-day ceremony that is claimed to have paralysed Barcelona and cost up to £50 million.

500 attendees were apparently forced to sign secrecy agreements while 200 butlers, cooks, and secretaries were reportedly brought into Spain from India and Thailand. Mittal’s firm was supposed to cover the expense of cleaning up Cork Harbour, but they were unsuccessful. It was estimated that the cleanup would cost €70 million.

Lakshmi Mittal Controversies

The “Cash for Influence” Mittal Affair

Adam Price, a member of the Plaid Cymru party, was able to get a letter that Tony Blair sent to the Romanian government in 2002 in favour of Mittal’s LNM Group steel firm, which was competing to acquire Romania’s state-owned sector. Given that Mittal had donated £125,000 to the British Labour Party the year before, this disclosure generated controversy

Blair was criticised since LNM was registered in the Dutch Antilles and only employed 1% of its staff in the UK, despite his defence that he was just “celebrating the success” of a British firm. LNM was a “significant global rival of Britain’s own ailing steel sector.”

Vladimir Lisin Biography, Age, Assets, Houses, Family, Career

Professional Career

The state-owned steelworks of Trinidad and Tobago, which were making a huge loss, was bought by Mittal in 1989. In a year, he transformed them into successful businesses.

The family’s primary assets in India up to the 1990s were an alloy steel facility close to Pune and a cold-rolling mill for sheet steel in Nagpur. Lakshmi has no involvement in the family firm, which is currently operated by his younger brothers Pramod Mittal and Vinod Mittal and includes a sizable integrated steel factory close to Mumbai.

For a pittance of just one Irish pound, Mittal paid the government in 1995 to buy the Irish Steel facility in Cork, Ireland.

In 2001, six years after it opened, it was shut down, making roughly 400 workers redundant. Environmental problems that have since occurred at the site have drawn criticism. The Irish government unsuccessfully sought a High Court ruling that Mittal’s business should pay for the expense of cleaning up Cork Harbour. It was estimated that the cleanup would cost €70 million.

Prior to December 2001, Mittal bought assets and renamed them Ispat Mexicana and Ispat Karmet, his company in Kazakhstan. He changed the name of Sidex Galati, which he had bought in November 2001, to Ispat Sidex in that month.

The day after acquiring the PHS Steel Group, which included Huta Sendzimira, Huta Katowice, Huta Florian, and Huta Cedler from the Polish government, the LNM Group was successful in completing the $155 million transaction to free the Romanian government from the control of the steel assets Siderurgica Hunedoara and Petrotub Roman.

In the follow-up, Ispat Tepro took the place of Petrotub Roman.

Mittal was effective in influencing Polish politicians during the 2003 privatisation of the PHS steel group, which at the time was Poland’s largest steel producer, by using Marek Dochnal’s consultancy. Dochnal was later detained for bribing Polish authorities in a different incident on behalf of Russian spies. The Polish government declared in March 2007 that it sought to renegotiate the 2004 sale to ArcelorMittal.

After many fatalities in his mines, Mittal’s workers accused him of tolerating “slave labour” conditions. For instance, in December 2004, 23 workers perished in explosions at his mines in Kazakhstan as a result of malfunctioning gas detectors.

Mittal was successful in his hostile takeover attempt of Arcelor in 2006–2007, and the company was renamed, Arcelor Mittal. By doing this, he gained ownership of several steel companies, including Usinor of France, Arbed of Luxembourg, and Aceralia of Spain.

Lakshmi Mittal Education

The LNM Institute of Information Technology (LNMIIT) was founded in 2003 as an independent non-profit organisation by the Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, Usha Mittal Foundation, and the Government of Rajasthan. The Foundation established the Usha Lakshmi Mittal Institute of Management in New Delhi in 2009 alongside Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

After receiving a sizable grant from the Lakshmi Mittal Foundation, SNDT Women’s University renamed the Institute of Technology for Women (ITW) as Usha Mittal Institute of Technology. He attended Shri Daulatram Nopany Vidyalaya, now Nopany High, for his primary and secondary education.

Philanthropic work

Sports

After seeing India win just one medal—bronze—at the Summer Olympics in 2000 and one medal—silver—at the Summer Olympics in 2004, Mittal made the decision to establish the Mittal Champions Trust with $9 million in order to assist 10 Indian athletes with the capacity to compete on a global scale.

Abhinav Bindra received an Rs. 1.5 Crore (Rs. 15 million) prize from Mittal in 2008 for winning India’s first individual Olympic gold medal in shooting. Steel from ArcelorMittal was also used to build the ArcelorMittal Orbit for the 2012 Summer Olympics. He matched the $1 million that was raised for Comic Relief on The Apprentice, a celebrity-themed special of the BBC.

Mittal had become a top candidate to purchase and sell Wigan and Everton of the Barclays Premiership. But on December 20, 2007, news broke that the Mittal family had bought a 20% stake in Queens Park Rangers football team, joining Bernie Ecclestone and Mittal pal Flavio Briatore. Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of Mittal, joined the board of directors as a result of the investment

The joint investment in the faltering club led to rumours that Mittal may be seeking to join the rising group of affluent people who are massively investing in English football and modelling themselves after comparable benefactors like Roman Abramovich. On February 19, 2010, Briatore announced his resignation as chairman of QPR and continued to sell shares in the team to Ecclestone, who is now the club’s sole owner.

Medical

The Mittals gave a £15 million donation to London’s Great Ormond Street Charity in 2008, making it the largest private gift the hospital has ever received. The Mittal Children’s Medical Centre, their new building, is partially funded by the contribution.

Pandemic COVID-19

In 2020, during the COVID-19 epidemic in India, he gave the PM Cares Fund 100 crores.

Lakshmi Mittal Net Worth

His net worth as of 2022 is $17.9 Billion. The majority of Mittal’s wealth comes from his 38 per cent ownership in ArcelorMittal, which is the largest steel producer in the world outside of China. As of June 2022, the stake is owned by him and his family through a trust, according to the business’ website. Mittal is given credit for the whole wealth in order to represent his roles as the company’s founder, chairman, and CEO.

Since the 2004 merger of the family-owned LNM Holdings and the publicly listed Ispat International to become Mittal Steel, Mittal has received more than $4 billion in dividend payments and another $2 billion that he personally paid. His cash investments are valued based on an evaluation of these revenues, taxes, charity giving, and market performance.

On December 20, 2007, it was revealed that the Mittal family had acquired a 20% interest in Queens Park Rangers, joining Bernie Ecclestone and Mittal’s buddy Flavio Briatore. Amit Bhatia, the investment’s son-in-law, joined the board of directors as a result of his membership

The joint investment in the faltering club fuelled rumours that Mittal could be seeking to join the increasing group of affluent people making significant investments in English football and copying benefactors like Roman Abramovich. Ecclestone became the club’s single-largest stakeholder on February 19, 2010, after Briatore resigned as QPR chairman and sold further shares to him.

Club Career

Ismaily and Sheffield United

Fathy played right defense and midfield for Ismaily in Egypt, where he won the Egyptian Premier League in 2001-2002. In the early months of 2007, the Egyptian daily Al-Ahram stated that Fathy’s club had accepted Sheffield United’s £700,000 bid for the player.

On January 24, 2007, Fathy finally agreed to a three-and-a-half-year deal. While playing for the Blades, Fathy made his Premier League debut for Manchester United as a substitute in the last minutes of a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Bramall Lane on February 10, 2007, and his complete first team debut against Liverpool at Anfield on February 24.

Al Ahly

After talks with Sheffield United’s management, Fathy was rumoured to be moving to the Egyptian club El Zamalek for 2 million euros, but the player rejected the transfer even though the teams had agreed on a fee. Fathy insisted he wanted to continue his professional playing career outside of Egypt. However, Fathy’s relocation and Sheffield United’s assent to a transaction were made possible by El Zamalek’s Egyptian rivals Al Ahly. After spending eight months at United and only making three senior appearances, Fathy signed for El-Ahly on September 10 for a cost of £675,000.

However, Fathy was signed after the Egyptian transfer window had closed, and as Al-Ahly couldn’t register him to play until the following January, they opted to loan Fathy out of the country to help him get back into match shape. Fathy played frequently for the first squad at Kazma in Kuwait while on loan from Al Ahly, where he scored four goals while playing for the team regularly. On March 10, 2008, Fathy made his Al Ahly debut against Arab Contractors in a road match. He later established himself as Hossam Ashour’s backup in center midfield for Ahly.

Pyramids FC

Following Al Ahly’s inability to secure a contract renewal with the 35-year-old defender, Pyramids FC announced on April 11th, 2020, that Fathy would be joining their team at the conclusion of the season on a free transfer. After losing another squad star, Abdallah El Said, to Pyramids, Al Ahly supporters had mixed sentiments about Fathy’s relocation.

International Career

When Fathy played for Egypt against South Africa in 2001 at the age of 17, he became the nation’s youngest-ever international. Even before playing for his club’s main team, Ismaily SC, although this came shortly after, Fathi was chosen for the national team by Egyptian Coach Mohsen Saleh.

He was then called up for the Egyptian junior squad. In addition to representing Egypt in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2003, Fathy was a member of the Egyptian young team that won the African Youth Cup in Burkina Faso that year. At one point, Fathi was a member of Egypt’s U-20, U-23, and senior squads at the same time.

Fathy was also a member of the Egypt team that defeated Ivory Coast on penalties to win the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations at the Cairo International Stadium.

Fathy was selected for the tournament team and was recognized as the fair player of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations. In May 2018, he was included in Egypt’s team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The game versus Russia ended with him scoring his own goal.

Fran Karacic Biography, Age, Father, Wife, Salary, FIFA 22, Career, Net Worth & Wiki

Club Career

Al Ahly

Sobhi made his professional debut at the age of 17 on February 6, 2014, in an Egyptian Premier League game against Ghazl El-Mahalla, managed by Mohamed Youssef, after rising through the youth ranks at the Cairo club Al Ahly. He played for Al Ahly-U17s at the Sheikh Zayed Friendly Tournament in the UAE in April 2014, when he caught the eye of Spanish club Atlético Madrid.

He scored his first goal for Al Ahly on June 16, 2014, in a 3-0 victory over Misr Lel-Makasa. He began the pivotal title play-off game against city rivals Zamalek on June 28, 2014, and he contributed to his team’s 1-0 triumph.

He scored twice in a 4-0 victory against Petrojet on July 2 to help Al Ahly win the league. Sobhi and Al Ahly agreed to a long-term contract in March 2015. Al Ahly’s victory over Zamalek in the 2014 Egyptian Super Cup was aided by Sobhi.

Under Juan Garrido, he established himself as a regular, and his efforts in 2014–15 caught the eye of many European teams, including Arsenal, RB Leipzig, Roma, Sampdoria, and Udinese. On January 10, 2015, in the first match between the teams after the violence at the Port Said Stadium in 2012, he scored an injury-time equalizer against Al-Masry.

On July 21, 2015, in a 2-0 victory against Zamalek, Sobhi stood on the ball, causing Hazem Emam to kick out at him and get dismissed. This incident garnered Sobhi international notoriety. Al Ahly finished the 2014–15 season in second place, trailing only Zamalek, their ferocious adversary.

As he restated his stance on the ball trick that infuriated the Zamalek players, Sobhi generated controversy in the 2015 Egyptian Super Cup matchup versus Zamalek.

Al Ahly went on to defeat his opponent 3-2 and afterward expressed regret for his behavior. On April 15, 2016, during a game against ENPPI, he was dismissed for the first time in his career after arguing with an ENNPI player during halftime.

Stoke City

For a $5 million price, Sobhi joined Stoke City in the Premier League on July 25, 2016. On August 20, 2016, he made his Stoke debut in the Premier League against Manchester City. On October 31, 2016, in a 3-1 victory over Swansea City, he contributed his first assist for Stoke when Alfie Mawson’s cross resulted in an own goal.

The following game, against West Ham United, saw him make his debut Premier League start, making history as the first youngster to start a league game for Stoke in nine years. After returning from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, Sobhi shone in victories over Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace at home. As Stoke concluded the season in 13th place, Sobhi appeared on the field 19 times.

Sobhi and the Potters agreed to a new five-year deal before the start of the 2017–18 campaign. On August 23, 2017, he scored his first goal for Stoke in a 4-0 EFL Cup victory over Rochdale. On December 23, 2017, he scored his first Premier League goal in a 3-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion. On Boxing Day, he tied the score against Huddersfield Town with a goal. As Stoke was demoted to the EFL Championship in 2017–18, Sobhi made 27 appearances throughout the season.

Huddersfield Town

On June 12, 2018, Sobhi signed a three-year contract with Huddersfield Town for a sum of £5.7 million. He only made four appearances for the Terriers and struggled to win David Wagner’s approval before making a comeback to Egyptian football in January 2019.

International Career

At 17 years, 11 months, and 18 days old, Sobhi made his national team debut against Tanzania on June 14, 2015, in the opening round of a qualifier for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, making him the second-youngest player to ever represent Egypt. He scored his first goal at the highest level of the game on March 29 against Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

Héctor Cper chose Sobhi to be a member of the Egyptian team that played in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in January. Sobhi played in four of Egypt’s six games throughout the campaign, mostly as a substitute as Egypt fell to Cameroon in the championship game.

He was included in Egypt’s preliminary team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in May of that year. He led the Egypt national under-23 football team at the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations, which Egypt hosted, in November 2019.

Ramadan scored the second goal in the 114th minute as Egypt defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 to win the championship. Ramadan was also chosen as the competition’s top athlete.

Professional Career

In 1961, Carl Icahn started working for Dreyfus Corporation as a stockbroker. He joined Tessel, Patrick & Co. as an options manager in 1963, and then transferred to Gruntal & Co. Icahn established Icahn & Co., a firm that specialized in risk arbitrage and options trading, in 1968 with investments totalling $400,000 from his uncle M. Elliot Schnall and $150,000 of his own money.

In his first takeover effort, he gained control of Tappan in 1978 and compelled the sale of the business to Electrolux, forcing a profit of $2.7 million, or twice his initial investment. In 1979, Icahn purchased Bayswater Realty & Capital Corporation. He bought ACF Industries in 1983, then sold the company’s shares to Phillips Petroleum in 1985 for a $50 million profit.

Icahn purchased 50% of Trans World Airlines in 1985 by pooling his finances with investor funds and monies borrowed from banks; in 1988, he completed the acquisition of the company through a leveraged buyout. Icahn used “asset stripping”—the methodical sale of TWA’s assets—to pay off his debts, earning him the moniker “corporate raider.” He gave American Airlines the London routes of TWA in 1991 for $445 million.

He left TWA with a $540 million debt in addition to a $469 million profit. To sell TWA tickets, he established lowestfares.com and bought Ramy El-stake Batrawi in Global Leisure Travel. Icahn attempted to acquire 89 per cent of U.S. Steel for $8 billion in a hostile takeover in October 1986; the attempt was abandoned in January 1987.

He earned $200 million in profit when he sold his $1 billion investment in the business in 1991. Icahn made a $700 million profit in June 1989 when he sold his stock in Texaco for $2 billion in the largest share transaction ever on the New York Stock Exchange.

He made a $375 million acquisition bid for Pan Am in 1990. He acquired a 6.6 per cent stake in Western Company of North America in 1994 as BJ Services was acquiring the company. Icahn made a $125 million profit when he sold his 7.3 per cent stake in RJR Nabisco in February 1997.

In a conflict with Ronald Perelman, Icahn acquired ownership of Marvel Comics in June 1997. He submitted a second bid for Pan Am in March 1998 with a $43 million offer. Icahn was the leader of an investment group that bought a 5% share in RJR Nabisco in December 1998 and put pressure on the management to split the company’s food and tobacco businesses.

He acquired equity holdings in Time Warner and Blockbuster Video. He then threatened a proxy battle, asking shareholders to vote against the merger. Mylan gave up on trying to buy King in February 2005.

The wired portion of XO Communications’ business would be sold to Carl Icahn, who was then the company’s chairman and a significant shareholder, for $700 million. The proceeds would be used to settle debts and to repurchase its preferred stock from Icahn for around $600 million.

Then, Icahn would have fully owned the wired company and retained ownership of his 60% interest in XO. R2 and other minority shareholders blocked the transaction through the legal system in 2008, which charged Icahn with penalties due to his conflict of interest, even though Icahn owned the majority of the company and the board of directors had declared the deal to be in the best interest of shareholders.

Icahn sold his Nevada casino holdings, including the Stratosphere Las Vegas, Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, Arizona Charlie’s Decatur, and Aquarius Casino Resort, which was run by American Casino & Entertainment Properties, a division of Icahn Enterprises, to a division of Goldman Sachs in April 2007 for $1.3 billion, or $1 billion more than he paid for the properties.

Icahn sued Motorola in March 2008 to get four seats on the company’s board and compel the sale of its mobile division. Icahn bought a significant amount of Yahoo! stock in May 2008 and, when the board of directors rejected a buyout offer from Microsoft, vowed to launch a proxy battle to have them removed.

Imclone was eventually sold to Eli Lilly and Company for $6.5 billion in cash in September/October 2008 after Bristol-Myers Squibb’s attempted purchase of the drug was denied. Icahn was involved in both transactions. He sued Realogy regarding a potential debt swap in December 2008.

Icahn took part in a proxy conflict for Amylin in April 2009. He proposed to pay $0.55 per share for the shares of XO he did not already own in September 2009. Mentor attempted to respond by implementing a shareholder rights plan, but this failed to deter Icahn.

He exchanged his interests in eBay for shares in PayPal in November 2015 as well. Icahn reported a 7.13 per cent position in Xerox in November 2015 as well. Icahn made a purchase offer for Pep Boys in December 2015. Additionally, he increased his holding in Cheniere Energy to 13.8 per cent, making him the company’s largest stakeholder.

Carl Icahn sold the unfinished Fontainebleau Resort Las Vegas for $600 million in August 2017, more than four times what he had originally paid. Carl Icahn Donations

The Carl C. Icahn Centre for Science and the Icahn Scholar Program at the Connecticut prep school Choate Rosemary Hall bears his name, as does Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island and the Icahn Centre for Science in New York City. With an endowment worth around $400,000 each year, this charity provides for 10 students’ tuition, lodging and board, books, and supplies each year for four years (freshman to senior).

Icahn donated a sizable gift to his alma school Princeton University to support the Carl C. Icahn Laboratory for Integrated Genomics, a genomics research facility that carries his name.

A trustee of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, which he also generously supported, named a building the Icahn Medical Institute in his honour and renamed the Mount Sinai School of Medicine the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2013 in return. The Eric Schadt-led Icahn Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology has changed its name.

Icahn House, a 65-unit building for homeless families made up of single women with children and pregnant single women, was erected by his charity, the Children’s Rescue Fund, which also runs Icahn House East and Icahn House West, two homeless shelters in New York City.

Icahn pledged to donate more than half of his wealth when he signed up for the Giving Pledge list in 2010. Icahn, an activist investor who has partnered with the Humane Society of the United States to achieve its goal of ending the sourcing of pigs produced in gestation crates, is pressuring McDonald’s to fulfil this commitment.

Political Information About Him

Donald Trump received Carl Icahn’s support in the 2016 US presidential election. He also disclosed the creation of a super PAC with a $150 million pledge to promote corporate tax reform, particularly about tax inversions, which happen when businesses relocate their headquarters from the United States to another country with lower tax rates.

As the presumed Republican candidate for president, Trump declared that he will put Icahn forth as Treasury Secretary of the United States. He chose Steven Mnuchin as his replacement, nevertheless. On December 21, 2016, it was revealed that Carl Icahn would work for President Donald Trump as a special advisor on regulatory reform.

He would support Trump in an “individual capacity” rather than on behalf of the government, and since he wouldn’t have any “specific duties,” he wouldn’t have to give up his business interests. On August 18, 2017, Icahn resigned from this position, citing a wish to avoid interfering with Neomi Rao’s duties as administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.

Icahn sold some of his assets in a stock that was sensitive to changes in the price of steel in February 2018, only days before the Trump administration announced a 25 percent tariff on steel imports, preventing him from suffering a $6 million loss. Icahn explicitly questioned Scott Pruitt about his views on the EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard when the President had Pruitt interviewed for the position of Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Icahn personally discussed his proposed modifications to the ethanol rule with Gary Cohn and President Trump. If Icahn proposed to pass, CVR Energy, of which he owns 82 percent, would save $205.9 million annually.

When President Trump issued an exception to his regulation freeze to increase the tax benefit of master limited partnerships, the Sugar Land, Texas oil refinery profited. Following President Trump’s victory, the value of CVR Energy’s stock increased by $455 million.
