In 1996, Vijay got his first successful movie Poove Unkaga directed by Vikraman, which helped him to settle in Tamil movies as an emerging star. After a few flops, he got success with the film Love Today. He starred in the Sunrise film Nerrukku Ner along with Sun Shiv Kumar in 1997. The movie was produced by Mani Ratnam.
