Alekperov had a net worth of US$16.2 billion in 2023 which made him the 94th richest person in the world and the 5th richest person in Russia, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index by Bloomberg L.P. As of 16 April 2021.

A 36.8% ownership share in Spartak Football Club is held by Alekperov (Moscow). The superyacht maker Heesen Yachts is owned by him. Leonid Fedun is Vagit Alekperov’s business partner. Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in April and May of 2022, Vagit Alekperov was subject to personal sanctions by Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

Early life 

On September 1, 1950, Alekperov was born in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR, one of the first hubs of the global petroleum industry. Alekperov’s mother was a Russian Orthodox and his father was a Muslim from Azerbaijan.

Alekperov identifies as a religious person, yet he is neither Muslim nor Orthodox.

Personal life

Yusuf Alekperov, who was born in 1990, is the son of Alekperov and Larisa Victorovna Alekperova. Alekperov enjoys collecting coins. Although it is uncertain what exactly makes up his collection, some sources claim that it is among the three biggest private collections in Russia.

According to Forbes, more than 700 coins, or nearly a quarter of the collection, are on display at Alekperov’s private Museum of Numismatics. There are also a few silver and platinum pieces from the Russian Empire.

Professional Career

Western Siberia

Alekperov relocated to Western Siberia in 1979, where he worked for Surgutneftegaz from 1979 to 1985, establishing himself as an authority in the field. As he rose through the ranks, Bashneft Production Company promoted him to first deputy general director in 1985.

Moscow

Alekperov became the youngest deputy energy minister in Soviet history when he was named deputy minister of the oil and gas industry in 1990. Alekperov advocated for the creation of vertically integrated state-owned energy businesses at the time in order to bring together the diverse array of enterprises in the energy sector that were then reporting to various Soviet bureaucratic authorities. Western oil corporations started aggressively looking for partners in Russia right about this time.

Alekperov personally led the Russian team at the discussions in 1990 during a visit to British Petroleum sites in the United Kingdom.

LUKoil

Langepas-Uray-Kogalymneft changed its name to LUKOIL in April 1993, and Alekperov was appointed as the company’s president and board chairman. Alekperov held 10.4% of the business in 2002. He left his role as chairman of the Lukoil board of directors in 2000, but he remained the company’s president.

Moreover, Alekperov increased his ownership in Lukoil to 20.4 per cent by purchasing 11.13 million shares (1.3%) in May 2008, becoming him the company’s largest stakeholder. The first Russian corporation to purchase an American business was LUKoil. LUKoil purchased Getty Petroleum Marketing and its 1,300 gas stations in the US in November 2000.

Alekperov has branched out into the banking and media industries, like many other Russian billionaires. Alekperov was one of the two major shareholders in the IFD Kapital Group as of May 2006.

A personnel reorganisation at the corporation may happen in 2023, Alekperov initially stated in an interview he was searching for a replacement for his role in 2018. Alekperov is included in the unclassified CAATSA report to the U.S. Congress’ 2017 list of Russian “oligarchs.”

Alekperov established The Foundation “Our Future” in 2007 with the goal of fostering social entrepreneurship in Russia. Moreover, Alekperov has often said in public and acknowledged that his share of Lukoil (more than 20% of the corporation) would be handed to a specifically established charity foundation in accordance with his will.

Lukoil has contributed more than RUB 652 million to 22 Russian districts in the 2020 coronavirus pandemic and about $900,000 to nations where it conducts business abroad. Additionally, Alekperov contributed RUB 50 million of his own money to the Republic of Komi’s effort to combat the coronavirus.

Australia and the United Kingdom have imposed sanctions on Vagit Alekperov as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in April 2022.
