He is considered one of the most talented goalkeepers in the world. Courtois advanced through Genk’s youth system, and as an 18-year-old, he played a major role in the team’s success in the Belgian Pro League. He joined Chelsea in July 2011 for a reported £8 million and was immediately loaned to Atlético Madrid. In his three seasons there, he won the Europa League in 2012, the Copa del Rey in 2013, and the La Liga title in 2014.

The Ricardo Zamora Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding goalkeeper in La Liga for his performances in his final two seasons, was also awarded to him. Courtois returned to Chelsea in July 2014 and helped them win the League Cup and the Premier League in their first season. As Chelsea won the Premier League again two years later, he won the Golden Glove award. Real Madrid signed Courtois in 2018 for £35 million, making him La Liga’s most expensive goalkeeper, surpassing Jan Oblak’s record. In 2020, he won his second La Liga title and third Zamora trophy.

In October 2011, Courtois became the youngest goalkeeper to represent Belgium at the senior level. In addition to earning over 90 caps, he has played at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2016, the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2020. Life Journey

Woodgram tells the story of a Football Stopper whose nickname is ‘The Octopus’. Our Thibaut Courtois Biography brings you a comprehensive account of notable events that have taken place during his lifetime. As part of our article on the Belgian goalkeeper, we examine his early life, family life, relationship life, and many OFF-Pitch little-known facts.

Thibaut Courtois’s bio is quite interesting since everyone knows about his goalkeeping abilities. Without further ado, let’s begin. Thibaut Nicolas Marc Courtois was born in Bree, Belgium, on the 11th day of May 1992. He was born to his mother, Gitte Courtois and father, Thierry Courtois.

Courtois was not born to be a football player; he was born to play volleyball. He was clumsy and occasionally absent-minded as a young boy. During a forward roll at gymnastics, he admitted that he was thinking “too much” and ended up knocking out his teacher. He said, “I have never been a hero in gymnastics.”

During his childhood, accidents were a frequent occurrence. More than once, his mother, Gitte Lambrechts, a physiotherapist, had to drive him to the hospital. He had a broken ankle, a jammed finger, a handlebar in his groin, a gaping wound in his head after colliding with a chair, and so on. Life was never boring.

Lambrechts and Thierry Courtois, both semi-professional volleyball players, had already decided to let Courtois decide which sport he would play when he was born on 11 May 1992 at the Maas en Kempen hospital in Bree, Belgium.

Although they took him to volleyball games, it wasn’t long before Courtois told his parents he wanted to focus on football. He was five. In Belgium, you cannot join a club to play organized football until you are six years old. However, after Thibaut Courtois had done enough crying and nagging, the president of a local club, Bilzen, allowed the youngster to join his youth club.

Courtois began his career as a left-back for local side Bilzen V.V., not as a goalkeeper. Despite being 18 months younger than his teammates, Courtois looked strong and powerful. “He was a robust and energetic kid,” recalls his first coach, Bart Theunissen. “A quiet guy, but he was already no-nonsense at that time. We didn’t have a real goalkeeper, since we rotated players, as is normal at that age. But you could see he had some sharp reflexes.”

In no time at all, the scouts of Racing Genk, the local first division club, noticed his talent. He was invited to one of their trial days when he was eight and soon after he joined the company in 1999. It was there that he was transformed into a goalkeeper.

Genk’s Courtois graduated from the youth system at age 18, and he played a critical role in the team’s victory in the Belgian Pro League. He joined Chelsea for £8 million in July 2011 and was immediately loaned to Atletico Madrid. After that, history passed by, as they say.

Yes, he is romantic, but his relationships are very unstable. This is the relationship life of Thibaut Courtois, which we present to you. Marta Dominguez, pictured above, is well known to have been Thibaut’s girlfriend. Having met while he was on loan at Atletico Madrid, they were together for a number of years. Both had happy times together during those years.

His Spanish girlfriend Marta Dominguez gave birth to their daughter, Adriana, on 26 May 2015. It was confirmed that Courtois and Dominguez had ended their relationship in April 2017. That same year, Thibaut also had a son, Nicolas, with Dominguez, born in 2017. She was pregnant when they decided to part their separate ways. Thibaut is the only known goalkeeper who has parted ways with a pregnant wife.

After splitting from his pregnant girlfriend, Thibaut Courtois was spotted enjoying a holiday with a mystery woman not long after. On a Jet Ski ride, she clung to him as they enjoyed each other’s company. Caroline Lijnen was once Kevin’s girlfriend. Kevin and Thibaut Courtois dated for 3 years before their relationship was destroyed by Thibaut Courtois, a trusted friend of Kevin’s.

When Thibaut Courtois slept with his girlfriend, he started a feud with her. Kevin de Bruyne’s ex-girlfriend Caroline Lijnen reveals she cheated on him with his best friend Thibaut Courtois after Kevin had an affair with her.

Moreover, Courtois gave her the most effective emotional treatment, which she could not get from de Sruyne.
In her words to Kevin, Thibaut Courtois accomplished in a night what he couldn’t in three years. She claimed Kevin cheated on her first and she paid back the debt. Kevin’s parents were also aware of his cheating but couldn’t do anything about it. Probably because he was a star, they supported him instead.

Mishel Gerzig and Thibaut Courtois were first spotted together in the summer of 2021, but have finally made their relationship official. The 29-year-old is a model, and each of the two have expressed their love for one another on their respective social media accounts.

As can be seen in the table above, Thibaut resembles his father, Thierry Courtois, who is a retired semi-professional volleyball player. The celebrated goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’ mother, Lambrechts, is also known as Gitte Courtois. In addition to her husband, Thierry, Gitte is a Belgian volleyball legend. The sport brought Thibaut Courtois’ parents together.

The beautiful Valerie Courtois looks just like Thibaut and is known by the name of Valerie Courtois. Valerie is a professional volleyball player, who plays as a libero for her team, Budowlani Lodz, and for the National Team of Belgium. In 2013, she was named the Best Libero of the European Championships. It is Valerie’s elder brother who is the same age as her.

Gaetan Courtois is Thibaut Courtois’ younger brother. Gaetan is a big supporter of his elder brother. Courtois is fluent in both Dutch and French, as well as Spanish and English.

COVID-19 was detected in him on 29 December 2021.

Taking inspiration from Courtois’ pose during a save in January 2013, a Colombian fan created a viral social media meme called ‘Thibauting’ in tribute to the Belgian goalkeeper.

The word was included in a shortlist compiled by the Dutch dictionary Van Dale in November 2013 to determine the hottest slang sports/amusement word of the year in Belgium. As well as being based on and pronounced the same as “Tebowing”, the term is also similar to the worldwide “planking” meme that was popular in 2011.

Courtois competed as an Alfa Romeo driver in the 2021 F1 Virtual Grand Prix championship.

Club Career

Courtois was born in Bree, Flanders, to a Walloon father and a Flemish mother. Bilzen V.V. was the club where he started his career as a left-back. When he was seven years old, he joined Racing Genk, and soon he was converted into a goalkeeper.

Genk

  • Courtois progressed through the Genk youth system, where Koen Casteels was initially considered the team’s primary goalkeeper, but during an injury crisis, Courtois made his first-team debut on 17 April 2009 against Gent at the age of 16 years and 341 days.
  • As a result of Koteles’ registration issues, Courtois was made first-choice goalkeeper for the 2010–11 season over Casteels, after he turned down a transfer to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim of the Bundesliga.
  • In the 2010–11 Belgian Pro League season, he was crucial to Genk’s title triumph. With only 32 goals conceded over the course of 40 league matches and 14 clean sheets kept for Genk, he won Goalkeeper of the Year and Player of the Year honors.

Chelsea

In July 2011, Courtois signed a five-year contract with Premier League club Chelsea for a reported $9 million.

Loan to Atlético Madrid

  • Within weeks of joining Chelsea, Courtois was sent on loan to Atlético Madrid for the season.
  • Courtois made his Atlético debut on 25 August with a 4–0 UEFA Europa League win over Vitória de Guimares. Three days later, he kept a clean sheet during his La Liga debut, a goalless draw with Osasuna in the Vicente Calderón Stadium.
  • In his first six La Liga appearances, Courtois kept four clean sheets, making him the first-choice goalkeeper over Sergio Asenjo.
  • Courtois was shown the first red card of his professional career after fouling Karim Benzema for a penalty in the Madrid derby on 26 November 2011. Atlético lost 1–4 after Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty past substitute goalkeeper Asenjo.
  • Courtois’ loan to Atlético has been extended through the 2012–13 season. His first match after receiving the loan extension was against Chelsea in the 2012 UEFA Super Cup final in Monaco, which ended in a 4–1 win for Atlético Madrid.
  • Later that season, Courtois set a new Atlético Madrid record of 820 minutes without conceding a goal at the Estadio Vicente Calderon but lost 1–0 to Real Sociedad.
  • Atlético reached the 2013 Copa del Rey Final, where Courtois won man of the match in a 2–1 victory over Real Madrid, the first time Atlético had defeated their city rivals in 14 years.
  • During the 2013–14 season, Courtois’ loan to Atlético was extended by a further 12 months.
  • As Atlético was drawn to play Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final, it was reported that Courtois’ contract stipulated that Atlético had to pay Chelsea €3 million per match in order to select him against his parent club and that Atlético could not afford such a sum.
  • In view of considerations of sporting integrity, UEFA declared such a clause “null, void and unenforceable”, and confirmed that Atlético were free to select Courtois without making such a payment.
  • By conceding the fewest goals in a substantial number of matches during the 2013–14 season, Courtois earned the Ricardo Zamora Trophy and had a significant impact on Atletico Madrid’s first La Liga title since 1996.
  • The La Liga Award was given to the best goalkeeper of the league, along with Willy Caballero of Málaga CF and Keylor Navas of Levante UD, with Navas winning the award. Despite this, Atletico lost the UEFA Champions League Final to Real Madrid by a score of 1–4 a.e.t. on 24 May in Lisbon.

Controversies

In February 2014, Courtois caused a stir in the national team, when he remarked to Simon Mignolet, his rival for the starting goalkeeper spot, “You have to be humble and respectful, and he should remember that.” This was despite the fact that Mignolet in previous interviews had simply expressed the desire to keep working and to try to regain his spot in the national team.

Wilmots, then out of a job, accused Courtois and his father Thierry of leaking Belgium’s line-ups before they should have been made public. Courtois denied the accusations.
