With friends from college, Fridman founded a window-washing business, an apartment rental agency for foreigners, a business that sold used computers, and a business that imported cigarettes and perfumes in 1988 as Russian politician Mikhail Gorbachev started to open the economy in the late 1980s. These businesses hired students from various Moscow universities.

Russian-speaking Robert Yengibaryan, an Armenian, gave Fridman a lot of support. Later, when Vahe Yengebaryan became the Russian consul in New York in 2003, he developed a close relationship with Fridman’s economic interests. In a Spanish court in October 2019, Fridman claimed to be Vahe Yengibaryan’s buddy.

German Khan, Alexey Kuzmichev, and Fridman formed Alfa-Photo (sometimes spelled Alfa-Foto), which imported photographic chemicals, in 1988. The three partners established Alfa-Eco (Alfa-Echo, Alfa-Eko, Alfa-Ekho), a company that traded commodities and subsequently oil, as well as Alfa Capital (Alfa Kapital), a company that made investments, in 1989.

In order to cover the necessary amount, Fridman used $100,000 of his business’ profits to co-found Alfa-Bank in January 1991. The business evolved to become one of Russia’s biggest private banks.

The Perekrestok chain of supermarkets—also spelled Perekriostok—was established in Moscow in 1995 by Fridman’s Alfa Group. The X5 Retail Group was established in 2006 by Alfa Group through a merger with the Pyaterochka supermarket chain, which was established in St. Petersburg in 1999 by Alexander Girda and Andrey Rogachev. In December 2010, X5 paid $1.65 billion to purchase Kopeyka, another supermarket. The largest food retailer in Russia by sales is X5.

Golden Telecom is a sizable provider of internet and telecommunications services in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. In 2001, Alfa Group purchased a 44 percent share in the company. Fridman joined the board of directors of Vimpelcom in 2001, the same year Alfa acquired a strategic ownership stake in the significant Russian cellular provider.

Alfa Group combined its telecom investments under the moniker Alfa Telecom, which it changed to Altimo in 2005. MegaFon, Vimpelcom, Golden Telecom, and Kyivstar were among the companies it owned or had acquired. Additionally, Altimo purchased a 13.2 percent stake in Turkcell, Turkey’s biggest telecom firm, in December 2005.

Who is the best actress between Sonam Kapoor, and Alia Bhatt?

Alia Bhatt is a better actress than Sonam Kapoor. Alia Bhatt is the most talented, spontaneous, brilliant, and versatile actress of the present generation. She has acted exceedingly well not only in commercial movies such as ‘Student of the Year’, ‘2 States’, ‘Kapoor & Sons’ but also in critically acclaimed movies such as ‘Highway’, ‘Udta Punjab’, ‘Dear Zindagi’, ‘Raazi’, ‘Gully Boy’ etc. to name a few. She is simply brilliant in emotional scenes. Her portrayal as a simple small-town girl character is awesome in ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ and ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’. She portrays every character convincingly and impresses the audience with her performance. Sonam Kapoor, on the other hand, is not as brilliant as Alia Bhatt. In my opinion, Sonam Kapoor has been good at ‘Neerja’ and ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’. She might become a better actress in the near future.

Crispus Attucks Bio, High School, Age, Park, Quotes, Wiki & Net Worth

Crispus Attucks was an American sailor and a stevedore who is believed to be the first person killed during the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770. He has been made into a folk hero as the first-ever American to sacrifice his own life during the American Revolution. He is considered a symbol of American patriotism and was elevated to the status of an icon of the anti-slavery movement in the mid-19th century. While the exact details about his family and life are not known, it is believed that he was born to an African-born slave and a Natick Native American. He was probably an escaped slave who went on to rebuild his life as a successful free man-a rarity in the 18th century when slavery was rampant in America and Africans were considered properties of the white men.

On March 5, 1770, he led a group of people in a protest against a British soldier who had hurt a young barber’s apprentice. The feud became intense and a troop of British soldiers opened fire on Attucks and his men, killing a few and injuring many. Attucks was the first man to die. This incident proved to be a major catalyst in the early stages of the American Revolution. Following his death, he was lauded by the supporters of the ‘abolitionist movement’ and was widely recognized as an African-American man who played a significant role in shaping America’s history.

Crispus Attucks Family, Education & More

Crispus Attucks Born into slavery around 1723, Attucks was believed to be the son of Prince Yonger, a slave shipped to America from Africa, and Nancy Attucks, a Natick Indian. Little is known about Attucks’ life or his family, who reputedly resided in a town just outside of Boston. What has been pieced together paints a picture of a young man who showed an early skill for buying and trading goods? He seemed unafraid of the consequences of escaping the bonds of slavery. Historians have theorized that Attucks was the focus of an advertisement in a 1750 edition of the Boston Gazette in which a white landowner offered to pay 10 pounds for the return of a young runaway slave.

Crispus Attucks, “Ran away from his Master, William Brown of Framingham, on the 30th of Sept. last, a Molatto Fellow, about 27 Years of age, named Crispus, 6 Feet two Inches high, short curled Hair,” the advertisement read. Attucks, however, managed to escape for good, spending the next two decades on trading ships and whaling vessels coming in and out of Boston. He also found work as a rope maker.

Crispus Attucks High School

Crispus Attucks High School (Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School) of the Indianapolis Public Schools in Indianapolis, in the U.S. state of Indiana, is named for Crispus Attucks, an American patriot killed during what became known as the Boston Massacre. The school was built near Indiana Avenue northwest of downtown Indianapolis and opened on September 12, 1927, when it was the only public high school in the city designated specifically for African Americans. Despite the passage of federal and state school assimilation laws, Attucks was the city’s only high school with a single-race student body in 1953, largely due to residential discrimination, and remained a restricted school until in 1971 (although some historians suggested that it occurred in 1968). Attucks was converted to a junior high school in 1986, due to declining enrollment, and a middle school in 1993. It became a medical magnet high school in 2006, partially due to the school’s proximity to the campus of the Indiana University School of Medicine and its associated hospitals.

The red-brick building with terra-cotta and limestone detailing covers a two-square-block area and was built in three phases. A three-story main building, designed by local architects Merritt Harrison and Llewellyn A. Turnock, was constructed in 1927. A three-story addition and a two-story gymnasium were built in 1938. A newer, two-story gymnasium was constructed in 1966. The main building and the 1938 addition reflect Collegiate Gothic (or Tudor Revival) and Classical Revival styles of architecture. The high school was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. During its early years, Crispus Attucks was known for its excellence in academics, in addition to its successful athletic teams, especially its basketball program.

The high school also became a gathering place and a source of pride for the city’s African American community. In 1955 the Attucks Tigers won the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s state basketball championship, becoming the first all-black school in the nation to win a state title. In 1956 the team became first state champions in IHSAA history to complete a season undefeated since the state basketball tournament began in 1911. Crispus Attucks also won the IHSAA state basketball championship in 1959, and in 2017 was the IHSAA’s Class 3-A basketball champion.

How did Crispus Attucks die
How did Crispus Attucks die

Prior to the Boston Massacre

  • In 1750, a slave owner, William Brown announced that he would pay an award of ten pounds to whoever found his runaway slave, Crispus, whom he described in an advertisement. This piece of information makes it complicated for historians to ascertain his status during the Boston massacre. While many suggest that he was the runaway black slave in question, the others believe that he was already a free man by then.
  • The ones who believe he was a free man at the time of the Boston Massacre state that he was a sailor and a dock worker. He spent a long time of his life working as a stevedore along the Atlantic seaboard.
  • Others believe that he went by the name of “Michael Johnson” to live a free life under disguise and had just returned from the Bahamas in early 1770. He was supposed to leave for another trip for North Carolina when the Boston incident happened.

The Boston Massacre

  • In 1768, British soldiers came to Boston to control the colonial unrest which had erupted after the introduction of the ‘Stamp Act’ and the ‘Townshend Acts’. But the presence of troops made things worse and tensions started to pile up.
  • It was on March 5, 1770, when the unfortunate Boston Massacre happened. It started with an allegation from a boy who stated that a sentry had not paid a barber his bill. The boy was reprimanded severely just for asking for the payment. The colonists and the British soldiers of the 29th Regiment of Foot gathered where the confrontation was taking place and tensions started to rise.
  • Attucks was one of the colonists who gathered at the place. It is suggested that they had wooden pieces with them. Some sources state that the troops were attacked with clubs by the mob—led by Attucks—following which they opened fire. However, another eyewitness stated that Attucks was simply leaning on a wooden pole when the troops fired shots.
  • Attucks was among the five colonists who died that day, taking two bullets in the chest. He is believed to have been the first of the five people to die that day. There were also six more colonists who were severely injured due to the shooting.
  • The autopsy of Attucks’ body was done by the county coroners, Robert Pierpoint and Thomas Crafts Jr., and afterward, it was carried to Faneuil Hall where it was kept for three more days.

  • On March 5th, 1770 a group of sailors, including Crispus Attucks, protested against the British in front of the customs house in Boston. As the approximately 50 protestors advanced towards the British they repeated the words: “Don’t be afraid.”

  • Four others were killed by the British soldiers including Samuel Gray, Patrick Carr, James Caldwell, and Samuel Maverick.
  • This incident became known as the Boston Massacre.
  • The funeral for the victims of the Boston Massacre was attended by approximately 10,000 people.
  • At trial, most of the soldiers at the Boston Massacre were found not guilty. Hugh Montgomery, the man who killed Crispus Attucks, was found guilty of manslaughter. Personal Life

Ma goes by the nickname Pony, which is a translation of his family name Ma, which means “horse” in English. Also, he is renowned for leading a reclusive lifestyle and seldom makes public appearances.

Ma Huateng’s 9.7% ownership share in Tencent Holdings is the source of his riches. Moreover, he apparently owns real estate and works of art worth $150 million in Hong Kong. He has a renovated 1,820 m2 (19,600 sq ft) magnificent home in Hong Kong.

Professional Career

Ma’s first position was as a software developer for pagers at China Motion Telecom Development, a provider of telecommunications services and goods. He allegedly made $176 each month. Additionally, he was employed by Shenzhen Runxun Communications Co. Ltd. in the division responsible for Internet calling service research and development.

Tencent

Ma Huateng went on to co-found Tencent in 1998 with four of her former classmates. After Ma attended a demonstration for ICQ, the first Internet instant messaging service created in 1996 by an Israeli startup, the business released its first product. The concept served as inspiration for Ma and his team, who in February 1999 released a programme with a similar interface but a slightly different name: OICQ (or, Open ICQ).

By the end of 1999, the service had amassed over a million registered users, making it one of the biggest of its kind in China. The product gained popularity swiftly.

In an interview with China Daily in 2009, he referred to the parallels between ICQ and OICQ and said, quoting an Isaac Newton quotation, “If I have seen farther, it is through standing on the shoulders of giants,” in reference to the establishment of Tencent. Ma recalled, “We believed our product had a future, but at that time we just couldn’t afford it.” Ma discussed selling the business and even requested bank loans to address the issue.

OICQ, a coveted service from Tencent, was provided without charge, thus the business turned to venture investors to help pay its rising operating expenses. Ma went to the US investment firm IDC and the Hong Kong telecom company Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCCW), which paid US$2.2 million for 40% of Tencent’s shares.

Ma enhanced the messaging platform by enabling QQ users to send messages on mobile devices since the market for pagers was dwindling. After then, agreements with telecom carriers who agreed to split message costs led to 80 per cent of the company’s income.

AOL

After AOL (America Online) acquired ICQ in 1998, the firm claimed that OICQ’s domain names OICQ.com and OICQ.net violated ICQ’s trademark and launched arbitration against Tencent with the National Arbitration Forum in the United States. Following the AOL lawsuit, Ma made the decision to broaden Tencent’s line of business. Tencent launched its own site (QQ.com) and entered the online gaming sector in 2003.

Tencent had 74 per cent of the Chinese instant messaging market by 2004. It prompted Ma to launch Tencent on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Ma soon rose to become one of the wealthiest individuals in China’s telecom sector. His business raised $200 million in its IPO in June.

Tencent established Paipai.com, a C2C site that directly competes with Alibaba, at Ma’s urging in 2005. Ma set up two rival engineering teams in 2010 and gave them the task of developing a new product, imitating Microsoft.

One team introduced WeChat, a text messaging and group chat software, after two months. WeChat debuted in January 2011. With a US$1.5 billion profit margin, online games like Legend of Yulong and Legend of Xuanyuan increased sales by more than half, reaching US$5.1 billion.

Ma made the announcement that Tencent will establish an “internet hospital” in Wuzhen that would offer long-distance diagnosis and medication delivery in December 2015.

Involvement in politics

Ma served in the 12th National People’s Congress. Also, he is a deputy to the 5th Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress, according to the official Tencent website. Nevertheless, Ma was cited as stating during a tech conference in Singapore on censorship “Online businesses from any nation that handle information security must follow a specified set of standards and behave responsibly. Otherwise, it can result in rumours, slander, and disagreements between nations as well as within residents. Online management is therefore increasingly necessary.”

Dennis Rader Wife, Victims, Daughter, Biography, Wiki & Net Worth

Dennis Rader is an American serial killer also known as the BTK “Bind, Torture, Kill” Killer or the BTK Strangler. He started his murdering spree in the mid-1970s, terrorizing the citizens of Kansas for more than 30 years before he was finally arrested. Convicted of murdering ten victims, he was planning to attack another victim at the time of his arrest. Having developed a morbid fascination with extreme violence as a young boy, he often fantasized in his head about torturing and killing others. Known as a shy and studious boy, he had a darker side to his persona even as a teenager he used to kill dogs and cats in secret.

With time he grew bolder and began targeting human beings, killing his first known victims the Otero family in early 1974. He cleverly evaded being identified as a suspect and proceeded to kill several others, taking the final toll of his victims to ten. A narcissist who took pride in the murders he committed, he sent a series of anonymous letters to the police along with a few pieces of evidence claiming himself to be responsible for the murders. These letters subsequently led to his arrest in 2005. Currently, he is serving ten consecutive life sentences at El Dorado Correctional Facility in Kansas.

Dennis Rader, in full Dennis Lynn Rader, byname BTK or BTK Killer, (born March 9, 1945, Pittsburg, Kansas, U.S.), American serial killer who murdered 10 people over a span of three decades before his arrest and confession in 2005. He called himself BTK because he bound, tortured, and killed his victims. Rader was raised in Wichita, Kansas. He later claimed that as a youth he had killed animals and developed violent sexual fantasies that involved bondage.

In the 1960s he served in the U.S. Air Force, and in 1970 he returned to Wichita, where he married and had two children. He held various jobs, including a brief stint as a factory worker for the Coleman Company, a maker of camping equipment. In 1979 he graduated from Wichita State University, where he studied criminal justice. During this time he began working for ADT, a home-security company, and in 1991 he became a compliance officer in Park City, Kansas. Rader was active in his church, and he served as a Boy Scout leader.

  • He attended Riverview Elementary School. As a young boy, he was reserved and quiet. Even though he started developing some disturbing habits during his childhood, he managed to keep them hidden from the world.
  • As an adolescent, he fantasized about tying up and raping girls. Around this time, he also started killing animals like dogs and cats by torturing and hanging them. However, he was good at hiding his dark side and came across to the outside world as a polite and shy young man.
  • He graduated from Wichita Heights High School in 1963. He then worked for a few months before entering the Kansas Wesleyan College in 1965. He studied for only two semesters there and joined the US Air Force in 1966.
  • Dennis Rader spent four years on active duty in the Air Force. on the 25th of February 2005, a few minutes to noon the life of Kerri Rawson (BTK daughter) life changed completely. She has spent every day for the past 14 years trying to make peace with the news she heard. The FBI agent (who arrived at her Detroit-area apartment) told her that, her father, had just been arrested for 10 brutal murders. Calling himself BTK for “bind, torture and kill” the loving, protective father. With his wife, they have a son“Brian Rader’.

She thought she knew had terrified her hometown of (Wichita, Kan., ) between 1974 and 1991. Rawson who is 40 years old as for  2018 has written a book tilted (A Serial Killer’s Daughter) that reports how her horror and anger were tempered by the love she felt for her father. Rowson tells people that she can do anything that can make her not to be a serial killer’s daughter.”

The perfect inhuman of her father’s crimes haven’t made her journey easy. Rader often spent months repeating his victims most of whom he check slowly after binding their arms and legs with rope. Then hid mementos from his kills beneath the floorboards in the family’s linen closet.

Dennis Rader Murders/Crimes

  • On January 15, 1974, Rader strangled to death four members of the Otero family in their Wichita home—parents Joseph and Julie, and two of their children, Josephine and Joseph Jr.—before leaving with a watch and a radio. Strangulation and souvenir-taking would become part of his modus operandi or pattern of behavior. He also left semen at the scene and later said that he derived sexual pleasure from killing. The Oteros’ 15-year-old son, Charlie, came home later that day and discovered the bodies.
  • Rader struck again a few months later: On April 4, 1974, he waited in the apartment of a young woman named Kathryn Bright, before stabbing and strangling her when she returned home. Rader also twice shot her brother, Kevin, though he survived. Kevin later described Rader as “an average-sized guy, bushy mustache, ‘psychotic’ eyes,” according to a Time magazine article.

  • In early 1978, he sent another letter to television station KAKE in Wichita, claiming responsibility for the murders of the Oteros, Kathryn Bright, Shirley Vian, and Nancy Fox. He suggested many possible names for himself, including the one that stuck: BTK. He demanded media attention in this second letter, and it was finally announced that Wichita did indeed have a serial killer at large. A poem was enclosed titled “Oh! Death to Nancy,” a parody of the lyrics to the American folk song “O Death”. In the letter, he claimed to be driven to kill by “factor X”, which he characterized as a supernatural element that also motivated the Jack the Ripper, Son of Sam, and Hillside Strangler murders.
  • He also intended to kill others, such as Anna Williams, who in 1979, aged 63, escaped death by returning home much later than expected. Rader explained during his confession that he became obsessed with Williams and was “absolutely livid” when she evaded him. He spent hours waiting at her home, but became impatient and left when she did not return home from visiting friends.
  • Marine Hedge, aged 53, was found on May 5, 1985, at East 53rd Street North between North Webb Road and North Greenwich Road in Wichita. Rader had killed her on April 27, 1985, and he took her dead body to his church, the Christ Lutheran Church, where he was the president of the church council. There, he photographed her body in various bondage positions. Rader had previously-stored black plastic sheets and other materials at the church in preparation for the murder and then later dumped the body in a remote ditch. He had called his plan “Project Cookie”.
  • In 1988, after the murders of three members of the Fager family in Wichita, a letter was received from someone claiming to be the BTK killer, in which the author of the letter denied being the perpetrator of the Fager murders. The author credited the killer with having done “admirable work.” It was not proven until 2005 that this letter was, in fact, written by Rader. He is not considered by police to have committed this crime. Additionally, two of the women Rader had stalked in the 1980s and one he had stalked in the mid-1990s filed restraining orders against him; one of them also moved away.
  • His final victim, Dolores E. Davis, was found on February 1, 1991, at West 117th Street North and North Meridian Street in Park City. Rader killed her on January 19, 1991.

She is the eldest of nine children of Lenora Marie (née Criscione; b. 1923) and Phillip Leslie Tomalin (1917–1999), an advertising manager, television producer, and one-time nightclub singer. She has four brothers, Philip Jr., Terry (deceased May 19, 2016), Tim and O’Brian, and four sisters, Meredith, Bonnie, Amanda, and Missy.

Her father was of English, Irish, and Welsh ancestry, his English parents being from Hackney in London and his Welsh parents being from Bridgend. On her mother’s side, she is of Italian descent, with ancestors from the regions of Tuscany and Sicily. Sarandon was raised Roman Catholic and attended Roman Catholic schools. She grew up in Edison, New Jersey, where she graduated from Edison High School in 1964.

During and somewhat after college, she helped herself by cutting hair, cleaning houses, and working as a switchboard operator.

Sarandon was married to actor Chris Sarandon from 1967 to 1979. She has three children, a daughter Eva from a relationship with filmmaker Franco Amurri and two sons, Jack and Miles, with Tim Robbins. She and Robbins divided in the summer of 2009, after being together for 23 years.

Throughout 2011 and 2012, Susan Sarandon figured significantly to her real estate portfolio. Following her separation with Tim Robbins, Sarandon paid her ex $3.2 million in order to have entire ownership over the six-bedroom duplex the couple participated in Chelsea, Manhattan. That same month, she also splurged on a $1.75-million, a one-bedroom penthouse in Greenwich Village. In July 2020 Susan listed the six-bedroom Chelsea duplex for $7.9 million.

In addition, Sarandon headed to snatch up an apartment in Brooklyn for $900,000. Although the property is nothing special, the position is good and the 2,000-square foot apartment has its own parking garage. Sarandon will probably use the property for rental income.

Family, Education & More

Tina Turner With Father And Mother
Tina Turner With Father And Mother

Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, in Haywood County, Tennessee, to Zelma Priscilla (Currie) and Floyd Richard Bullock. Her family was sharecroppers. Her father was an overseer of a group of sharecroppers. During ‘World War II,’ Turner was separated from her parents and had to go and live with her grandparents in Knoxville. Tina was raised in the segregated South. She and her elder sister were abandoned by their sparring parents early on and were then raised by their grandparents. After her grandmother’s death, she eventually moved to St. Louis, Missouri to reunite with her mother. This opened up a whole new world of R&B nightclubs to the precocious 16-year-old.

Called up to sing on-stage with Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm in 1956, she displayed a natural talent for performing which the band-leader was keen to develop. Soon, Anna Mae’s aspirations of a nursing career were forgotten and she began to hang around with the group. When the singer booked to record “A Fool in Love” failed to turn up for the session, Ike drafted in Anna Mae to provide the vocal with the intention of removing it later.

However, once he heard her spine-tingling performance of the song, he soon changed his plans. He changed her name to Tina Turner and when the record became a hit, Tina became a permanent fixture in Ike’s band and his quest for international stardom. One thing led to another: they were married in Mexico between the births of Tina’s two sons – the first a result of an earlier relationship with a musician, the second with Ike.

Tina Turner Husband/ Spouse And Children

Husband/ Spouse: Ike Turner

Tina likened her early relationship with Ike Turner to that of a “brother and sister from another lifetime”. They were platonic friends from the time they met in 1957 until 1960. Their affair began while Ike was with his common-law wife Lorraine Taylor. They became intimate after she had gone into his bedroom to escape from another musician who attempted to have sex with her. After the birth of their son Ronnie in October 1960, they moved to Los Angeles in 1962 and married that same year in Tijuana. By 1964, Ike bought a house in View Park and they brought their son Ronnie, Tina’s son Craig, and Ike’s two sons with Lorraine (Ike Jr. and Michael) from St. Louis to live with them.

According to Tina, when she told Ike that she did not want to change her name and expressed concern about going on tour, he responded by striking her in the head with a wooden shoe stretcher. Tina wrote in her autobiography I, Tina that this incident was the first time Ike “instilled fear” in her, but she decided to stay with him because she “really did care about him”. She revealed that he was abusive and promiscuous throughout their marriage, which led to her suicide attempt in 1968 by overdosing on Valium pills. She said, “It was my relationship with Ike that made me most unhappy. At first, I had really been in love with him. Look what he’d done for me. But he was totally unpredictable.” Ike was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder in his old age.

Tina abruptly left Ike after they got into a fight on their way to the Dallas Statler Hilton on July 1, 1976. She fled with only 36 cents and a Mobil credit card in her pocket. On July 27, Tina filed for divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. Her divorce petition asked for $4,000 a month in alimony, $1,000 a month in child support, and custody of her sons Craig and Ronnie. The divorce was finalized on March 29, 1978. In the final divorce decree, Tina took responsibility for missed concert dates as well as an IRS lien.

‘TINA: The Tina Turner Musical’ and Lifetime Grammy Gold

It’s rare for one queen to applaud another, yet Tina Turner has always held a certain preeminence among music royalty. “You got to give the woman her props,” Donna Summer declared in a 2003 interview. “Tina Turner is an example of what rock ‘n’ roll music basically is – fighting through it. She hung in there through the thick and thin of it” (Wikane).

Tina Turner Grammy Awards
Tina Turner Grammy Awards

The Queen of Rock and the Queen of Disco share more in common than their respective crowns might otherwise suggest. Turner and Summer are the only female artists to garner concurrent Grammy nominations for pop, rock, and R&B vocal performances in a given year. In both instances, each artist was also nominated for “Album of the Year”, reflecting a cohesive vision in their work that transcended musical genres.

However, Tina Turner’s Grammy triumphs are particularly exceptional. Though critics raved about the singer’s live shows, the music industry had all but foresworn her as a recording artist before Private Dancer (1984). Selling more than five million units in the U.S. alone, the album resurrected Turner’s career and established her as a force in contemporary pop music, independent of her 16 years with Ike Turner. Upon winning “Record of the Year” for “What’s Love Got to Do With It” in February 1985, she exclaimed, “We’re looking forward to more of these.” Over the next three decades, “more of these” is exactly what Turner got.

'TINA The Tina Turner Musical' and Lifetime Grammy Gold
‘TINA The Tina Turner Musical’ and Lifetime Grammy Gold

Turner’s eight Grammy Awards and three Grammy Hall of Fame inductions span a wide range of material. Hits like “Proud Mary” and “Better Be Good to Me” have won the golden gramophone, but so have album cuts like “Back Where You Started”, as well as Turner’s recording of “Edith and the Kingpin” for Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters (2007). Nearly 20 additional Grammy nominations map a fascinating overview of Turner’s career, from her mid-’70s country album to her tour stop in Amsterdam for Wildest Dreams (1996).

Following the March premiere of TINA — The Tina Turner Musical at London’s Aldwych Theatre, the Recording Academy will honor Turner with a “Lifetime Achievement Award” later this summer. PopMatters joins the festivities by retracing Turner’s Grammy wins and nominations over the last six decades. To borrow a phrase from “Proud Mary,” we’re gonna do this nice and easy.

Huge Comeback: ‘Private Dancer’ and “What’s Love Got to Do With It”

In 1983, however, Turner’s solo career finally gained steam when she recorded a remake of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” Noted for a related video in which she appeared in a rag dress between two dancers, Turner took her remake to the top 5 on the domestic R&B charts and the top 10, U.K. pop.

Tina Turner Private Dancer
Tina Turner Private Dancer

The following year, she exploded back into the record industry when her much-anticipated solo album, Private Dancer, was released to overwhelming critical and popular success. It went on to win four Grammy Awards and eventually sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Private Dancer was a formidable entity in terms of its individual singles, with the empowerment anthem “What’s Love Got to Do With It” reaching No. 1 on the U.S. pop charts and earning the Grammy for Record of the Year. The smooth-jazz title track “Private Dancer” and “Better Be Good to Me” both reached the top 10 as well.

By this time, Turner was a woman in her mid-40s who was becoming even more renowned for her uniquely energetic performances and raspy singing technique along with her signature look — typically performing in short skirts that exposed her famous legs, with voluminous, punk styled hair.
