Early Life

Rami Malek was born in Torrance, California on May 12, 1981, to Egyptian immigrant parents Said and Nelly. His father worked as an insurance salesman, while his mother worked as an accountant. He has an elder sister, Yasmine, and an identical twin brother, Sami.

Malek attended Notre Dame High School in Los Angeles’ Sherman Oaks neighborhood as a teenager. During his freshman year, he was a member of the debate team. Despite his struggles with rhetoric, his debate master was struck by his theatrical interpretation which encouraged him to seek a career in acting. He later appeared in the one-man piece “Zooman and the Sign.” Malek received his academic education at the University of Evansville in Indiana, where he studied theatre.

Malek traveled to New York after graduating from college to appear in plays with the Slant Theatre Project. Soon after, he returned to the Los Angeles region in search of a job in Hollywood. During this period, he supplemented his income by delivering pizzas and cooking sandwiches.

Following several unsuccessful auditions, he received a call from casting director Mara Casey. This led to his first acting appearance, in an episode of the television series “Gilmore Girls” in 2004. He appeared in the play “Johnny Boy” at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank the same year. Malek obtained his Screen Actors Guild card in 2005.

TV Career

Malek’s television debut on “Gilmore Girls” was followed by appearances on the action war drama “Over There” and the spooky thriller “Medium” in 2005. The same year, he began appearing as Kenny Al-Bahir in the sitcom “The Battle at Home.” In 2010, Malek returned to television in a prominent role as a suicide bomber on the eighth season of the action thriller “24.”

But, he became tired of being stereotyped based on his race. Malek made his film debut as Pharaoh Ahkmenrah in the 2006 fantasy comedy “Night at the Museum.” He later appeared in the films “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” and “Night at the Museum: Mystery of the Tomb.”
