Foden grew up in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and was a Manchester City fan. He joined the club when he was four years old and signed his Academy scholarship in July 2016. Manchester City funded for his education at St Bede’s College, where he was schooled privately.

Foden made his professional debut in 2017 after winning the FIFA U-17 World Cup Golden Ball award during England’s triumphant Under-17 World Cup campaign. During the same year, he made his City debut and was voted BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in December.

Foden has subsequently made over 100 appearances for the club, winning nine awards, including the Premier League winners’ medal at the age of 21.

Foden has represented England at many juvenile levels, scoring 19 goals in 51 youth appearances. He was called up to the senior team for the first time on August 25, 2020, and made his debut against Iceland on September 5, 2020, in a 1–0 UEFA Nations League victory.

Foden is left-footed and can play as a wing-back or a right-winger, however Pep Guardiola describes him as “more of a midfielder.” Guardiola praised him in 2017 as “”It’s hazardous to say positive things about young players because they are still young, and they have to grow and learn many, many things,” he said.

But we’re confident in our ability to assist him because we feel he’s a man with promise, even if he’s not powerful or tall.” The Guardian’s Louise Taylor hailed Foden as “boasting precise, sticky control and endowed with the talent of slipping past opponents” in 2017.

Veteran football writer Brian Glanville characterised him in 2018 as a “talented and precocious youth,” adding that “young players of his skill and innovative brilliance are pitifully thin on the ground.” During his tenure at Manchester City, he was occasionally utilised as a false 9 in a central attacking role by boss Pep Guardiola.

Phil Foden is married to Rebecca Cooke and has a son, Ronnie, who was born in January 2019. The couple announced in April 2021 that they were expecting their second child, a daughter, in late summer or early fall 2021.
