Football Career

Club Career

Noorafkan, a native of Rey, Iran, began his football career with Ehsan Rey, where he primarily played as a striker. At the age of 15, Noorafkan joined Esteghlal as a young player and played for their under-19 squad. During his stint with Esteghlal’s Under-19 team, he was moved from striker to left defender.

Before the start of the 2015–16 season, Noorafkan was promoted to the senior squad. Due to the unavailability of Yaghoub Karimi and Meysam Majidi, Esteghlal coach Parviz Mazloumi chose to use Noorafkan as a left back to cover their position.

Omid Noorafkan made his senior debut on 17 December 2015, at the age of 18 years and 271 days, in a 1–0 win over Saba Qom, becoming Esteghlal’s youngest ever player at the time. Mehdi Ghayedi broke the record two seasons later. His outstanding efforts earned him a spot in the starting eleven for the 2015–16 season. He made 11 appearances as a left back during the season.

He was inserted into the starting lineup for the season opener against Naft Tehran. However, due to a FIFA transfer embargo that resulted in Esteghlal’s lack of midfield depth, club manager Alireza Mansourian attempted Noorafkan in his preferred position as a defensive midfielder. He also played this position with Iran U19.

Following his outstanding performance in that capacity, Omid Noorafkan was named to the team’s starting lineup. He scored his first professional goal in a 3–2 home win over Paykan on January 27, 2017. The next week, he scored again in a 3–0 triumph over Machine Sazi. He had earlier assisted Ali Ghorbani’s goal in that match.

On February 2, 2017, Omid Noorafkan began the AFC Champions League qualification play-off match against Al Sadd SC, which Esteghlal won in a 4–3 penalty shoot-out after a 0–0 tie after extra time. On February 12, he made his debut against city rivals Persepolis, assisting Kaveh Rezaei’s goal as Esteghlal triumphed 3–2.

Noorafkan was praised by Iranian media for his performance against Persepolis, whereas creative attacking midfielder Soroush Rafiei was overlooked in the match against Esteghlal.

After being substituted on April 4, Omid Noorafkan got into a dispute with his teammate, Yaghoub Karimi. Alireza Mansourian decided to exclude him from group training because of his behavior. He was also left out of the team to face Gostaresh Foulad on April 4. On April 7, he was eventually granted clearance to practise with the rest of the squad.

Omid Noorafkan was called up to the AFC Champions League team for the match against Lokomotiv Tashkent, however he sat on the bench. On 15 April, he returned to the starting lineup against Saba Qom, resulting in a 2–1 win for Esteghlal.

In Esteghlal 2–1 win over Padideh on April 29, he scored a stunning goal from beyond the box with his weaker foot. He concluded the season with three goals in 18 appearances across all competitions as Esteghlal finished second in the league, were ousted in the quarter-finals of the Hazfi Cup by Naft Tehran, and qualified from the Champions League group stage.

On June 16, 2017, Omid Noorafkan signed a contract extension with Esteghlal till 2019. At the end of the season, F.F.I.R.I. recognized him as “Persian Gulf Pro League Young Player of the Year.”

Noorafkan was barred from playing by the F.F.I.R.I. before the start of the season, along with two other Esteghlal players, Majid Hosseini and Mehdi Ghaedi, since Alireza Mansourian prohibited them from joining Iran’s under-23 camp.

After missing the first week of the season, the F.F.I.R.I. deprivation was ultimately lifted on July 29, 2017, and the players were ready to participate in the second week of the 2017–18 season.

On 4 August 2017, he made his season debut, drawing 0–0 with Esteghlal Khuzestan. In September 2017, he scored his first goal of the season in a 2–1 Hazfi Cup victory against Gol Gohar.

Outside of the boot named him one of the “100 Best Young Players to Watch in 2018” on December 20, 2017. On March 29, he scored the game-winning goal in a 2–1 away victory over Naft Tehran. Omid Noorafkan concluded the season with one goal in 24 appearances across all competitions as Esteghlal finished third in the 2017–18 season, won the Hazfi Cup, and qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals.

Noorafkan signed for Belgian First Division A team Charleroi on June 6, 2018, for a sum rumored to be about €250,000. On August 19, he made his Charleroi debut in a 3–2 away win over Genk.

Esteghlal re-signed Noorafkan on a six-month loan contract on January 26, 2019. In a 4–0 win against Paykan on February 7, he made his first league appearance since leaving Esteghlal. Currently, Omid Noorafkan plays for Sepahan SC. The move happened in the year 2020 and since then, he has been an integral part of Sepahan SC.

International Career

Noorafkan appeared in five under-17 matches for Iran, scoring one goal. He was later picked up for Iran’s under-20 team and became a regular participant. He became vice-captain of the Iranian under-20 squad and competed in the 2016 AFC U-19 Championship under manager Amir Hossein Peiravani, playing a crucial role in Iran’s tournament run.

After defeating Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals, Iran qualified for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, their first appearance in the event in 16 years, with Noorafkan starting every match. Iran, on the other hand, was eliminated from the competition after losing 5–6 on penalties to Saudi Arabia in the Semi-Finals.

Because the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup conflicted with Esteghlal’s Champions League match against Al Ain, Esteghlal coach Alireza Mansourian was opposed to Noorafkan joining the U20 side to compete. However, the coach then changed his mind and allowed the youngster to join the U20 group and lead the team.

He made his tournament debut while wearing the captain’s armband against Costa Rica, which Iran defeated 1–0. It was Iran’s first victory, and Mehdi Mehdikhani scored Iran’s first goal in the competition in 40 years.

On May 24, in Iran’s second encounter against Zambia, Noorafkan started the game and was fouled, earning a free-kick that Reza Shekari scored for a 2–0 lead. However, Iran was unable to maintain its lead as Zambia attempted a comeback, and Iran lost the match 4–2. He also played the entire 90-minute match against Portugal, which Iran lost 2–1 and therefore was eliminated from the competition.

Noorafkan was called up for the first time for the Iran senior squad by coach Carlos Queiroz in August 2017 at the age of 20 for Iran’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Korea and Syria. On March 17, 2018, he made his official debut, assisting Mohammad Reza Khanzadeh’s goal in a 4–0 win over Sierra Leone.
