Career

Early Career

  • After graduating, Bloomberg went to work for the investment house Salomon Brothers as an entry-level employee.
  • Within 15 years, he had risen through the ranks to become a partner and was in charge of the firm’s block trading activities.
  • When Salomon was let off when the company was acquired by another business in 1981, Bloomberg’s $10 million partnership purchase gave him with the funds he needed to start Innovative Systems.

Innovative Market Systems & Bloomberg LP

  • In 1982 Michael Bloomberg founded Innovative Systems a finance data services firm.
  • The rebranded Bloomberg LP became a global leader in various financial data services within twenty years.
  • The Bloomberg computerized terminal, financial information, and online resource were critical to the company’s success.
  • Bloomberg also owned the Bloomberg Business wire service, the New York City news radio station WBBR, plus Bloomberg Television.
  • Bloomberg sat on the boards of well known Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park Conservancy, Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, and Jewish Museum while still at the leadership of his corporation, and he gave $100 million for Johns Hopkins University.

  • Despite this, Michael Bloomberg was infamous for despotic outbursts in Bloomberg offices, chastising staff and revolting against anybody who left the company.
  • Bloomberg, a lifetime Democrat, ran for New York City Mayor election as a Republican in 2001, despite being a lifelong Democrat. Bloomberg spent more than $68 million of his own money on his mayoral campaign.
  • Bloomberg’s campaign themes centered on topics that were important to New Yorkers, such as traffic and transit improvements, housing, and education. The support of departing Mayor of New York City Rudolph Giuliani, whose conduct following the 9/11 attacks was generally acclaimed, benefited him the most.
  • Bloomberg won the mayor’s campaign despite lagging in the polls only weeks well before November 6 poll. He promptly took the reins of redevelopment, campaigned for the approval of a contentious citywide ban on smoking, boosted tourism, and eliminated the city’s financial deficit.
  • In 2005, Bloomberg was re-elected to a second term as mayor, and he advocated for a prohibition on trans-fat in foods, as well as environmental measures such as congestion charges throughout peak traffic hours and a 25-year plan to improve the city’s infrastructure.
  • Bloomberg further enhanced his national presence by giving policy-related lectures around the nation and leaving from Republican Party in 2007, all of which stoked speculation that he may run for President of the United States as an independent electoral candidate in 2008.
  • Instead, he said in 2008 October that even if the term-limit rule was changed, he would run for mayor again. A few weeks later, New York City Council changed the statute to allow for three terms in a row. Bloomberg was re-elected in November 2009.
  • Michael Bloomberg implemented a contentious public health campaign throughout his third term, expanding tobacco restrictions and seeking to prohibit the sale of huge sugary beverages.
  • The escalating scandal over New York City Police Department’s on a practise that permitted officers to hold, question, as well as search alleged persons without probable cause, also impacted Bloomberg’s last term.
  • Many people have criticised this practise for disproportionately targeting minorities, but Bloomberg has justified it as an essential crime-prevention measure. Bloomberg was replaced by Bill Blasio when his last term concluded in 2013.

Back at Bloomberg & Philanthropic Activities

  • Bloomberg resumed to running his eponymous financial information and media firm, Bloomberg LP, after leaving mayor’s office.
  • He remained active in environmental issues, publishing Climate of Hope book in 2017 . Michael Bloomberg announced American Cities Climate Change Challenge in 2018, a $70 million initiative to assist 20 cities in combating climate change.
  • The proposal comes just after Republican President Donald Trump said that the US will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.
  • Bloomberg, an outspoken Trump critic, has committed to spend an additional $80 million in the 2018 election to defeat Republicans.
  • He officially registered as Democrat that year, sparking rumours that he will run for president.

Presidential Run

  • Despite announcing in March 2019 regarding rumours about his campaign and stated he won’t run for president, Bloomberg entered the contest in November.
  • He ended up spending over $500 million, but he failed to win support, particularly after two debates in which he performed poorly.
  • He abandoned his candidacy in March 2020 and proclaimed his allegiance for Joe Biden.
  • Bloomberg was chosen to lead Defense Innovation Board in February 2022.
