Life Journey

Hernandez’s father, Jean-François, was also a footballer who played at the center-back position. He played for Atlético Madrid, and his younger brother, Theo, was also raised at the club and played in the same position. During an interview with Marca in October 2018, he stated that his family had not heard from their father for 12 or 13 years.

Hernandez was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend on 3 February 2017. The girlfriend was summoned to appear in court as well. Hernandez and his girlfriend, Amelia Llorente, were sentenced to 31 days of community service, while Hernandez also received a restraining order prohibiting him from being within 500 meters of her.

In June of the same year, Hernandez was arrested again for violating the restraining order when he and Llorente landed together in Madrid after returning from their honeymoon. The Spanish court sentenced Hernandez to six months in prison for this violation on 13 October 2021; Hernandez appealed his sentence and was instead given a four-year suspended sentence and ordered to pay a fine of €96,000.

Facts About Lucas Hernandez

  • Depending on the situation, he can play as a central defender or as a left-back. His weaker foot is decent, and he plays with his left foot.
  • A strong central defender with immense potential, he is one to watch in the future. For someone so young, he has excellent tackling skills.
  • It is not easy for him to lose aerial duels, and he makes a lot of interceptions and blocks. He is faster than the average defender and his versatility allows him to play in left-back as well.
  • One of his weaknesses would be that he has difficulty holding on to the ball for long periods of time; not that his dribbling skills or ball control are poor, but that he tends to release passes too early, which are either intercepted or misplaced.
  • Prior to playing youth football for Atletico Madrid, he played two years for CF Rayo Majadahonda between 2005 and 2007.
  • Atletico Madrid’s youth setup saw him play for Atletico Madrid Juvenil and Atletico Madrid B before making his senior team debut in December 2014.
  • Theo Hernandez, his younger brother, is also a footballer and an Atletico Madrid product. Theo plays for Real Madrid at the moment.
  • He has yet to make his senior international debut for France. Didier Deschamps has called him up for France’s upcoming friendly matches against Colombia and Russia.
  • It was against Italy on 6th March 2012 that he won his first cap for France in the under-16 team. Later, he represented France at the U-18, U-19, and U-21 levels.
  • His first highlight was when he came on in extra time of the Champions League final between rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at the San Siro.
  • At left-back, he replaced Filipe Luis and had the entire extra time to display his defensive skills.
  • Even though he handled Cristiano Ronaldo fairly well, Real Madrid won the final via penalty shootout as Juanfran hit the post allowing Ronaldo to seal the win for Real Madrid.
  • Since then, he has improved dramatically, proving to be a more than capable deputy for the aging Diego Godin, and with Filipe Luis out for months with a fracture, he will likely get more playing time.
  • Lucas has only played senior club football for Atletico Madrid, and is one of the Rojiblancos academy products like Koke Resurreccion, Saul Niguez, Fernando Torres, and Gabi.
  • Atletico Madrid have yet to win any major silverware with him, but he appeared in the 2016 UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid at San Siro.
