Gambling With Celebrity Lives – Will a conflict of interests have a negative impact on addicts?
Table of Contents
On the 19th of February, the National Health Service announced that it will no longer be accepting donations from the gambling industry for its addiction services – but what will this mean for the UK’s 430,000 gambling addicts?
Give and take
Gambling With Celebrity Lives
Between April and December of 2021, the gambling industry in the UK donated a massive £16 million in funding to addiction charity, GambleAware – £1.2 million of which went to addiction clinics run by the NHS. These contributions were described by National Mental Health Director, Claire Murdoch, as funding that allowed treatment services to be rolled out much faster than would otherwise have been possible. Donations from the gambling industry, which included £1 million from bookmakers, William Hill, and £4 million from Bet365, fund vital services such as a 24-hour national gambling helpline. Every respectable kaszino has a disclaimer about the gambling helpline and gambling addiction management.
Despite this, Ms. Murdoch has now stated that, as of the first of April this year, the NHS will not be accepting further funding from the gambling industry, stating, ‘Our clinicians feel there are conflicts of interest in their clinics being part-funded by resources from the gambling industry’, adding that, there was a desire to move to general NHS funding.
celebrity Lives
In a world where people are addicted to their phones, celebrities seem to be the new addicts of choice. This is apparent when one looks at the amount of money that celebrities are willing to gamble. In fact, some have even gone as far as to say that gambling with celebrity lives is more dangerous than gambling with real-life money.
While there may not be any hard data to back up this statement, it’s clear that celebrities are willing to put everything on the line in order to win. Case in point: Tiger Woods’ infamous scandal involving allegations of cheating at golf. The golfer was reportedly caught on camera placing bets on sporting events while he was still playing them. Needless to say, this resulted in him losing a lot of money and his career went downhill from there.
The risks of gambling for celebrities
The dangers of gambling for celebrities are well known. In recent years, there have been a number of high-profile cases in which stars have lost millions of dollars to problem gamblers. Even more concerning is the growing trend of celebrities using their fame to promote gambling establishments and games.
Gambling can be a very rewarding activity, but it also carries with it significant risks. For stars, these risks include the potential for financial ruin and addiction. If a celebrity begins to gamble excessively, they may lose control over their finances and put their personal safety at risk.
It’s important that celebrities understand the dangers of gambling and the potential consequences of indulging in problem gambling behavior. By speaking out against problem gambling, they can help to prevent other stars from succumbing to its siren call.
What are the consequences of gambling for celebrities?
There are many consequences of gambling for celebrities. Some celebrities have struggled with addiction, financial ruin, and even suicide as a result of their gambling problems. Gambling can also lead to bad decision-making, as well as emotional instability. Some famous people have even gone so far as to say that gambling has ruined their lives.
Some famous people have admitted to being addicted to gambling, while others have only gambled moderately and not experience any negative consequences. However, some celebrities have had serious financial problems as a result of their gambling habits. For example, Lindsay Lohan lost millions of dollars in casino games and was reportedly close to bankruptcy. Other celebrities, such as Tiger Woods and Ben Affleck, have been accused of using their celebrity status to take advantage of online roulette and poker rooms. Gambling can also lead to emotional instability.
Mixed messages
The Mental Health Director’s announcement has baffled some industry leaders, coming just a matter of months after she told The Guardian that gambling companies should be hit with a levy to fund treatment rather than leaving the NHS to ‘pick up the pieces’.
While many understand the concerns regarding a conflict of interest, a larger concern may be that gambling addicts may miss out on the help that they so desperately need once this source of funding is removed. For the past couple of years, we’ve seen countless headlines regarding the financial and staffing pressure on the NHS and, there is a very real fear that there simply won’t be enough resources to help the growing number of UK gambling addicts.
Conclusion
Gambling addiction is a growing problem in the UK with an increase of 16.2% between 2020 and 2021 alone. It is therefore understandable that many feel that Claire Murdoch’s decision is foolhardy at best and, dangerous at worst. Gambling addiction can cause irreparable harm to sufferers and their families and, we will be watching closely to see just how the government plans to replace the vital funding previously received from the gambling industry.

• Lety Sahagun (2009-2015) – In 2009, Javier began dating the Mexican actress and model Lety Sahagun. As a couple, they were quite a big deal in their native country and even made Who Magazine’s 10 S*xiest Couple list. Every time he played a game, she was the first person he called, and whenever he met someone, his girlfriend was the first person he introduced. Despite this, there were some issues between them. Lety was accused of cheating from 2011 onwards when he was accused of having an affair with Chaska Morek. They remain very much together, according to sources close to them, and the rumors were rejected largely. In 2015, they separated. • Chaska Morek – Ever since he arrived on the English shores after signing with Manchester United, he was linked up with actress Chaska Morek, who was studying at Cambridge University at the time. They were spotted having dinner at the Globe restaurant in London in September 2013. During their date, they asked not to be disturbed and eventually left through the back door. • Lucia Villalon – Chicharito first dated TV presenter Lucia Villalon in March 2015, during his time with Real Madrid. Lucia worked as a presenter for Real Madrid. They were pretty open about their relationship and used 1422 to symbolize it. Their lucky numbers were combined to form 1422. His signing with Bayer Leverkusen in August 2015 put a strain on their relationship since Lucia chose to remain in Madrid. They did, however, initially manage to make their relationship work and even got engaged in 2016. Eventually, the long-distance took a toll on their relationship, and they called it quits in 2017. • Camila Sodi (2017) – In February 2017, reports surfaced that Chicharito had been dating actress Camila Sodi. Lucia’s relationship with him ended due to his affair with Sodi. All such rumors were refuted, however, by the Mexican star and his actress girlfriend. Their relationship lasted only a few months. She revealed in her interview with Vanity Fair in April that they had called it quits. According to her, the vitriol and hate they have received over the supposed origins of their relationship proved to be their downfall. Furthermore, she found it difficult to deal with long distance. • Andrea Duro (2017-2018) – In July 2017, Chicharito posted a picture of an unidentified woman with her back turned to the camera. The actress took to Twitter at the end of the month to reveal that they were dating and that she was the mysterious woman described in his post. • Sarah Kohan – In January 2019, Hernández and his wife Sarah Kohan, an Australian model of Romanian descent and travel blogger, announced on Instagram that they were expecting their first child.

Javier grew up in a football-addicted family, so it was expected that he would fall in love with the game at an early age. Javier signed a contract that made him the highest-paid player in MLS in January 2020. His salary is $6 million per year. A record-setting (for the MLS) $10 million transfer fee was paid by the LA Galaxy for the right to sign Javier.
Javier Hernández purchased a home in Beverlywood, Los Angeles for $ 5.6 million in 2020. Over 6,555 square feet of living space and six bedrooms are featured in the home. Located on a quarter-acre lot, this contemporary home was built within the last year. Chicharito can practice his soccer skills on a large grassy lawn outside, which has a pool, a spa, and a spa. The house also has a two-car garage.
As part of their lower-division team, he began playing for a small-time Mexican club known as ‘Chivas’ in 2005. He struggled during his early games, however. During one point in time, he went goalless in many matches.
He had a solid comeback in 2009 when he played in the ‘Apertura’ tournament and finished as the third-highest scorer.
In 2010, he continued to perform energetically. He was the joint top-scorer in the 2010 ‘Torneo Bicentenario’ tournament. During his 11 games, he scored a total of 10 goals. His five previous games were not played.
The management team from Manchester United went to Mexico in late 2009 to scout some good players. A number of them were made aware of Javier and were impressed with his skills.
As he was too young, Manchester had to wait before making a bid, as they could not approach an underage player. ‘Manchester United’ offered him a contract after he made his senior ‘World Cup’ debut.
Javier made his debut for ‘Manchester United’ during the 2010–2011 season. Within the first 18 minutes of his debut, he scored his first league goal.
After making his competitive debut against ‘Chelsea’ in August 2010, he performed beyond expectations and soon became one of the contenders for the ‘Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Young Player of the Year.
In the Champions League, he led his team to the finals, but they were unable to win the trophy. Despite this, he scored 20 goals in his first season. His name was announced as the ‘World Goalgetter of 2011’ in July 2011.
On 26 July 2011, he faced a minor setback when he suffered a concussion during a training match in New York. Although he was cleared the next day, he was told to be careful.
He signed another contract with ‘Manchester United’ in October 2011 that had him staying with the club for the next five years. His goals were consistent. In 36 games for his team, he scored 12 goals.
In terms of goals scored, he was better in the third season than he was in the previous two. Javier scored 18 goals in 36 appearances that season. Manchester United’s star player was turning out to be a revelation and was already being hailed as one.
His performance suffered a major setback in the fourth season. He scored 9 goals in the 35 games he played for ‘Manchester’.
After a poor performance, he was loaned to ‘Real Madrid,’ with the option of giving him away permanently. In the end, he returned to ‘Manchester’ because ‘Madrid’ refused to offer him a contract.
In August 2015, after his contract with ‘Manchester’ ended, he joined ‘Bayer Leverkusen,’ a ‘Bundesliga’ team. In six matches during the group stage of the Champions League, he scored five goals.
His team was unable to advance in the knockout stage despite his efforts. His first season in the Bundesliga ended on a happy note, as he was named ‘Bundesliga Player of the Month’ three times.
Again, his performance was average in the 2016–2017 season. His 36 appearances resulted in 13 goals. The Bayer company had to let him go after this below-average performance. After signing this contract, he joined ‘Premier League’ club ‘West Ham United’.
The 2017 season with ‘West Ham’ was not particularly impressive, as he only scored 8 goals in 33 appearances.
During the 2010 ‘FIFA World Cup,’ he made his ‘World Cup’ debut as a member of the national team. He has been part of every subsequent ‘FIFA World Cup’ tournament since then. Currently, he is the highest-scoring Mexican international player of all time.

Her parents divorced when she was six years old. A year later, her father took her and Marcus to Seattle where they lived out of a hotel for several days. A vacation that looked like fun for seven-year-old Hope turned into an alleged kidnapping when Jeffrey was arrested by the police, and the children were returned to their mother.
When she was a forward at Richland High School, she scored 109 goals and led her team to three back-to-back league titles from 1996 to 1998, as well as a state championship win in 1998. Solo also played soccer for the ‘Three Rivers Soccer Club’ in the Tri-Cities during her school days.

In June of that year, she was charged with assault in the fourth degree after being arrested for allegedly attacking her half-sister and nephew. In January 2015, the charges were dismissed. They were reinstated in October 2015 and again dismissed in May 2018.

She played for the Seattle Sounders Women in the 2012 club season. The Seattle Reigns FC signed Solo in 2013 for the inaugural season of the ‘National Women’s Soccer League’. After playing 54 matches for the club over three seasons, she took ‘personal leave’ in 2016.
She published her autobiography, ‘Solo: A Memoir of Hope’, co-authored with sports journalist Ann Killion, on August 14, 2012, through HarperCollins. The book debuted at number 3 on ‘The New York Times Best Seller’ list for hardcover non-fiction.
After surgery on her left wrist in 2013, she took a three-month break. In 2015, Solo became a member of the US squad that won the FIFA Women’s World Cup after defeating Japan 5-2.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, she drew criticism for calling the Swedish team “bunch of cowards” after the latter defeated her. As a result, her contract with US Soccer was canceled, and she was suspended. When she was suspended, she had played in 202 international matches with 102 shutouts.

Originally named Eugene Maurice Orowitz, Landon was born on October 31, 1936, in New York City, New York to parents Peggy (née O’Neill) and Eli Maurice Orowitz. He had a sister named Evelyn who was three years older than him. In 1941, the family relocated to Philadelphia, New Jersey where his Bar Mitzvah was held at Temple Beth Shalom. Eli worked as a studio publicist and theatre manager while Peggy was a comedian and dancer.
He had a troublesome childhood with an emotionally unstable mother at home and social pressures at school. Once, during a beach vacation, his mother attempted suicide by drowning herself.

Landon managed to save her but it deeply affected him. The incident, which he later dubbed as the worst experience in his life, left him in stress, which in turn caused his childhood problem of nocturnal enuresis to persist. His mother would hang the wet sheets outside his window to display them to the neighbors, further traumatizing him.
Landon studied at Collingwood High School where he displayed prodigious skills as a javelin thrower. It even garnered him a sports scholarship to the University of Southern California but a torn ligament during his freshman year put a stop to his sports career.
American actor best remembered for his roles as Little Joe Cartwright in Bonanza, Charles Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie, and Jonathan Smith in Highway to Heaven. One of his Little House co-stars – Melissa Anderson – commented upon his stature in her book, saying “He wore lifts almost all the time back then. Our wardrobe man, Andy, said that between the lifts on the inside of his ‘Charles Ingalls’ boots and the heels on the outside, he gained quite a few inches.”

Career
Two of his first big roles were as Tony Rivers in I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957) and Tom Dooley in the western The Legend of Tom Dooley (1959). That same year he was approached by producer David Dortort to star in a pilot called The Restless Gun (1957), which was renamed when the series was picked up to Bonanza (1959). Landon played Little Joe Cartwright, the youngest of the three Cartwright brothers, a cocky and somewhat rebellious youth nevertheless had a way with the ladies.
For 14 years, Landon became the heart and soul of the show, endearing himself to both younger and older viewers, and he became a household name during the 1960s and 1970s.
In 1968, after almost ten years of playing Little Joe, he wanted an opportunity to direct and write some episodes of the show. After the season finale in 1972, Dan Blocker, who played his older brother Hoss and was also a close friend, died from a blood clot in his lung, after gall bladder surgery, but Michael decided to go back to work, revisiting his own character in a two-part episode called “Forever.”
Bonanza (1959) was finally canceled in early 1973, after 14 years and 430 episodes. Michael didn’t have to wait long until he landed another successful role that most TV audiences of the 1970s would thoroughly enjoy, his second TV western, for NBC, Little House on the Prairie (1974).
That show was based on a popular book written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and he played enduring patriarch and farmer Charles Ingalls. Unlike Bonanza (1959), where he was mostly just a “hired gun,” on this show he served as the producer, writer, director, and executive producer.
Michael Landon First Wife Dodie Levy-Fraser
By the end of its eighth season in 1982, Landon decided to step down from his role on “Little House” as he saw his TV children grown up and moved out of their father’s house, and a year later, the show was canceled.
After 14 years on Bonanza (1959) and 8 years on Little House on the Prairie (1974), it was about time to focus on something else, and once again, he didn’t have to wait too long before Highway to Heaven (1984) came along.
Unlike the western shows that he did for 23 years, this NBC fantasy/drama show focused on Jonathan Smith, an angel whose job was to save peoples’ lives and work for God, his boss. Victor French played ex-cop Mark Gordon, who turned down a fortune but had redeemed himself by meeting Jonathan.

After Little House on the Prairie, Landon went on to produce, direct and star in another much-loved series, Highway to Heaven and wrote and directed the TV film, Where Pigeons Go to Die. In 1991, Landon had a new family-oriented pilot in production, when friends and relatives noticed he was looking tired.
He assured them it was just because he was working hard to get his new show underway. At the end of March, he cut short a Utah ski trip with Cindy and their children because he was having severe abdominal pains. On his own, back in Los Angeles, he checked into Cedars-Sinai Hospital for an MRI, which revealed a large tumor. A biopsy confirmed the worst news.

After a brief stay in the hospital at the end of May to treat a blood clot, Landon made peace with his fate and decided to live out his remaining days at home with his family. In the coming months, he spoke with his sister on the phone regularly, repairing that tenuous relationship.
On the afternoon of July 1st, surrounded by his family and close friends, he passed away at his Malibu home. His ashes were placed in a mausoleum close to the grave of his beloved TV father, Lorne Greene.
Michael Landon left behind a legacy in a body of work that pays tribute to the American Spirit, the strength of family, a solid work ethic and the infectious joy found in optimism and laughter.

Life Journey
Liu was born to migrants in Queens, New York, Lucy Liu has always struggled to balance an interest in her cultural heritage with a desire to move beyond a rigorously Asian-American experience. Lucy’s mother, Cecilia, a biochemist, is from Beijing, and her father, Tom Liu, a civil engineer, is from Shanghai. Once consigned to “ethnic” parts, the energetic actress is finally earning her stripes as an across-the-board leading lady.
Liu graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1986 and joined at New York University. She was depressed by the “dark and sarcastic” atmosphere of NYU, however, she moved to the University of Michigan after her freshman year. She graduated from UM with a degree in Asian Languages and Cultures, managing to crunch in some additional training in dance, voice, fine arts, and acting.
During her senior year, Liu auditioned for a little part in a production of Alice in Wonderland and trekked away with the lead. She was encouraged by the experience, she decided to take the dive into professional acting. She moved to Los Angeles and rift her time between auditions and food service day jobs, eventually scoring a guest presence as a waitress on Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990).
That work led to more walk-on parts in shows like NYPD Blue (1993), ER (1994), and The X-Files (1993). In 1996, she was cast as an energetic college student on Rhea Perlman’s ephemeral sitcom Pearl (1996).

In 1998, Liu got her big break when she auditioned for the part of Nelle Porter, the icy new addition to the wacky law firm Cage and Fish on the hit comedy Ally McBeal, created by David E. Kelley. Though she didn’t get the part, Kelley was struck with Liu’s performance and decided to create a character expressly for her.
Originally meant for a very limited stint, Liu’s razor-sharp portrayal of Ling Woo met with an overwhelmingly favorable reaction and her stay was extended into a regular spot on the show.
Earning an Emmy nomination in 1999 for Best Supporting Actress, Liu undoubtedly contributed to the overall success of the show, which won the Emmy for Best Comedy that same year.
On the big screen, Liu grabbed audiences’ attention with her turn as a leather-clad dominatrix in the poorly reviewed thriller Payback (1999), starring Mel Gibson.
Her other film efforts released that year, including the independent feature The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human, Play it to the Bone, with Woody Harrelson and Antonio Banderas, and Molly, starring Elisabeth Shue, quickly disappeared from view.
Liu had a good deal more luck in 2000, starring in the hit comedy Shanghai Noon as a rebellious Chinese princess who is kidnapped and taken to America’s Wild West, only to be rescued by bumbling heroes played by Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson.
In early 2000, it was announced that Liu had snagged one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood, that of the third glamorous female crime fighter in the big-screen update of Aaron Spelling’s 1970s detective series Charlie’s Angels. The film, which co-starred Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Bill Murray (with whom Liu reportedly fought during filming), was released in November 2000 and was a box office smash, taking in more than $260 million globally.
A sequel was released in the summer 2003—Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. Later that year, Liu starred as an assassin and Tokyo gang leader in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1 and later made an appearance in Vol. 2 of the film the following year.
In addition to her acting career, Liu is also an accomplished visual artist who has frequently displayed her mixed media compositions at galleries in New York and Los Angeles. In 1994, she won a grant to study art in China based on an exhibition of her work at a gallery in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood.
Liu continued to be featured in a variety of projects over the first decade of the 2000s, including films like Domino (2005), Watching the Detectives (2007) and The Year of Getting to Know Us (2008), while also lending her voice to animated fare like Kung Fu Panda and Tinker Bell (both 2008).
At the end of the decade, Liu made her Broadway debut as a replacement cast member for the Yasmina Reza play Gods of Carnage. Then, playing Madame Blossom, Liu returned to martial-arts themed movie work in 2012’s The Man With the Iron Fists, directed by and starring hip-hop artist RZA along with Russell Crowe.
Also seen in series like Ugly Betty and the short-lived Cashmere Mafia, Liu eventually found another TV hit in Elementary, which launched in 2012 and ran for seven seasons, coming to an end in 2019.
The show was a modern update of the classic Sherlock Holmes story, with Liu starring as Dr. Joan Watson. The actress also directed individual episodes.
