Yannick Carrasco Biography, Age, Height, Wife, Career, Net Worth & Wiki

Life of Amir Abedzadeh

Amir Abedzadeh is the son of great Iranian national team goalie Ahmad Reza Abedzadeh. According to astrologers, Amir Abedzadeh’s zodiac sign is Taurus. He is currently unattached, neither is he in a relationship. We don’t know anything about his prior relationships or previous engagements. He has no offspring, according to our records.

Amir Abedzadeh has lofty ambitions and ideals that he visualizes every day. He is certain that he can reach them. His attention is continually drawn to how he might develop himself on a regular basis. He realizes, sooner or later, that his thinking will place him in a position to attain his objectives.

He used to go into great depth about his aspirations. He would specifically state what they are and how he intends to get there. He feels it is now more about execution and doing. As his concentration is fixed on improvement, he understands that keeping the appropriate beliefs and patience will allow him to enjoy the ride while working hard towards those goals.

Amir Abedzadeh has had an eventful football career. The Martimo goalkeeper’s tenacity on “following his dream” saw him try his luck in England, the United States of America, and his own country before finding continuous top-level football in Madeira. Amir Abedzadeh is one of just a few players who have gone to a World Cup.

His ambition and plan were to perform in Europe no matter what, and he was prepared for an uncertain adventure. He  had an incredible time in England, the United States, and Iran. However, he knew he had to go to Europe during his time in Iran. Initially he had no idea how he was going to get there, or that he would begin in Portugal.

He was once part of a training session at Persepolis when he got into talking with a fellow goalie, Nilson Junior (former Vitória Guimarães, Moreirense, and Uniao de Madeira goalkeeper).

He told him he’d love to play in Portugal and that he’d ask him about the skill level, quality, and living there. Ironically, he moved to Portugal a few years later through a buddy who was playing in the second division and linked him with his agency.

That is how he began his career in Portugal, and he always knew he would end up in a top-tier league; it was a chance for him to start somewhere with high competition and quality.

His main goal is playing in Spain, especially for Real Madrid. He says he has always liked to play for the Galacticos since he was a child. He takes it seriously and talks to himself every day about that.

Here is the football career of Amir Abedzadeh at a glance. This section covers the entire football journey of Amir Abedzadeh and the time spent by him in different leagues, countries and clubs. This has been divided into sections which separately discuss the Club Career and International Career of Amir Abedzadeh.

Club Career

Abedzadeh attended the Persepolis Youth Academy from 2006 to 2007, having previously trained with his father since he was seven years old. He went to the United Kingdom when he was 15, and after two months with the third-tier club Brentford and a trial with Arsenal, he joined Tottenham Hotspur’s academy squad in 2009. Abezadeh departed Tottenham in the same year that the club signed Italian goalkeeper Mirko Ranieri.

Abedzadeh also played for amateur youth sides Dinamo Dorigo, London Tigers, and Persian FC, the latter of which was a member of the G.E. Roberts Enfield Football Alliance League.

Abedzadeh was unable to secure a work visa in the UK, so he traveled to the United States in 2011, signing with the Los Angeles Blues in the USL Pro, where his father was an assistant coach. On June 7, 2011, he made his debut with Los Angeles Blues 23 in a USL Premier Development League match against Orange County Blue Star. He made eight saves but allowed five goals and was given a yellow card. He had the chance to join Chivas USA of Major League Soccer in 2012, but he chose to prolong his contract with Chivas.

On July 15, 2012, Abedzadeh signed a three-year contract with Persepolis. He competed in the AFC Vision Asia U21 Tehran Premier League for Persepolis U21. In a game against Niroye Zamini U21, he scored a goal for Persepolis U21. Abedzadeh left Persepolis in 2014 without having played a single game for the club.

Abedzadeh signed a four-year deal with Rah Ahan on July 3, 2014. He worked under the guidance of his father, Ahmad Reza Abedzadeh, who was also a goalkeeping coach at Rah Ahan. He made his professional debut on September 19, 2014, against his previous club Persepolis, coming on as a 34th-minute substitute for the injured Igor Nenezi. Rah Ahan released him after the end of the game.

Abedzadeh joined Maritimo in the Portuguese Primeira Liga on January 23, 2017 after impressing with Barreirense in the Campeonato de Portugal. He is the club’s second Iranian goalkeeper signing, following Alireza Haghighi, who joined in 2016. He made his debut in a Portuguese League Cup match in September 2017.

On 14 October 2017, he made his Taça de Portugal debut against Torcatense in the third round. As Martimo won 1–0, Abedzadeh maintained a clean sheet and was named man of the match. Several times throughout his career in Portugal, he was named the best goalkeeper in the Primeira Liga.

Abedzadeh joined SD Ponferradina on July 7, 2021, becoming the club’s first Iranian player. In a career spanning over 150 matches, Amir Abedzadeh has achieved a clean sheet 47 times.

International Career

Abedzadeh was called up to the Iranian national under-17 football team’s training for the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup at Kish Island, but was never invited back.

Abedzadeh spoke on his chances of playing for Iran’s national under-23 football team: “They told me again again that they wanted to bring in guys who have been together for a long time and are well acquainted… They also stated that if we qualify, they will call in and evaluate fresh players. So, ideally, they can beat Iraq and qualify for the Olympics, and then I’ll get my opportunity. I believe the issue is that I spent the previous four years in England and they were unable to watch me play as much as the local players. That has been a huge letdown for me.”

Abedzadeh was a member of Iran’s squad for the 2014 AFC U-22 Championship, although he did not appear in any matches. He was invited to the Olympic team in 2015 for the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship qualifying.

Abedzadeh was invited into the Iran national squad for the first time on November 5, 2017, for friendlies against Panama and Venezuela.

He was nominated to Iran’s final roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in June 2018. On May 19, 2018, he made his debut against Uzbekistan.

Freddie Mercury And Mary Austin – True Love Story

When Freddie Mercury first met Mary Austin, he was 24 years old and she was 19. At the time neither could have imagined what the future would hold for them, both as a couple and singularly as friends with a deep love for each other. Their real-life relationship is examined in Bohemian Rhapsody, starring Rami Malek as Mercury and Lucy Boynton in the role of Austin. “All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s simply impossible,” Mercury once said of Austin. “The only friend I’ve got is Mary, and I don’t want anybody else. To me, she was my common-law wife. To me, it was a marriage.”

Freddie Mercury And Mary Austin
Freddie Mercury And Mary Austin

At the time, Mercury was a year away from founding Queen, one of the 20th century’s biggest rock bands. Five months after meeting, Austin and Mercury moved into together; they remained a couple for six years, but friends for life. The movie Bohemian Rhapsody, out November 2, memorializes the relationship between Mercury (Rami Malek) and Austin (Lucy Boynton), which continued to evolve even after Mercury came out as bisexual and their romantic connection ceased. Austin was there when he was dying of AIDS. She was there for it all. “It’s fair to say she was the love of his life,” Mick Rock, one of the couple’s friends, said in the documentary Freddie Mercury: The Untold Story.

Now, Austin lives a private life in Garden Lodge, the mansion she inherited from Mercury when he died at the age of 45 in 1991. Though Austin once regularly greeted mourners and interacted with fans, she’s since stopped. In 2017, Austin angered Mercury’s fans when she repainted the shrine to Mercury had gradually built up on the gated walls outside the Kensington mansion. But the home itself is a shrine to Mercury. Austin hasn’t changed the decor of Mercury’s dream home much at all.

Because for Austin, Mercury’s death was tremendous. “I lost somebody who I thought was my eternal love. When he died I felt we’d had a marriage. We’d lived our vows. We’d done it for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health. You could never have let go of Freddie unless he died — and even then it was difficult,” she told OK.
Until she met Mercury in 1969, Austin’s life hadn’t been positioned towards the extraordinary. Her father was a wallpaper trimmer. Her mother worked as a maid. Both of her parents were deaf. Though Austin’s job in PR at Biba allowed her to brush shoulders with the elite, like Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger, she actually met Mercury through Queen’s future lead guitarist Brian May, whom Austin briefly dated. After visiting the store a few times, Mercury asked Austin out on his 24th birthday.

She said no. He persisted. So, they went out the next night instead. Within the year, while Mercury and Austin were living in a tiny London flat, Mercury’s newly formed band, Queen, would begin to see success. Austin recognized Mercury’s star power during a small showcase at his old college. She also recognized that she was coming along for the ride. “That night, I realized that I had to go along with this and be part of it. As everything took off I was watching him flower. It was wonderful to observe,” Austin told OK.
To their friends, Austin and Mercury seemed like the epitome of young love and happiness. “They were very sweet. They were like a married couple. This was obviously true love,” Queen’s Brian May said in Freddie Mercury: The Untold Story. Mercury proposed to Austin in 1973. “He gave me a big box on Christmas Day. Inside was another box, then another and so it went on. It was like one of his playful games,” she recalled in 2013. “Eventually, I found a lovely jade ring inside the last small box. I was shocked. It just so wasn’t what I was expecting. I just whispered, ‘Yes. I will.’” The scene is recreated in the film Bohemian Rhapsody.

Mary Austin Children
Mary Austin Children

Though Mercury referred to their relationship as a marriage, the two never formally got married. Their relationship changed as Queen experienced more fame, and Mercury began to sleep with men. Austin suspected Mercury was “not one with himself.” Eventually, Mercury came out as bisexual, as Austin had suspected. “It was a relief really, to actually hear it from him. To know that I had guessed less right,” she said in Freddie Mercury: The Untold Story. “I was supportive of him becoming gay because it was part of himself. It was nice to see Freddie at one with himself. It was more than nice. It was wonderful.”

Their physical relationship ended, but their connection only grew. Mercury bought her a flat near his apartment and employed her as his personal assistant. Their history with one another clouded all other romantic partnerships. In a 1985 interview, Mercury said, “All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s simply impossible. I couldn’t fall in love with a man the same way I did with Mary.”

That said, they both did have other long-lasting relationships. After their split, Mercury — born Farrokh Bulsara to conservative Parsi parents — remained single for some time. He dated other women (like actress Barbara Valentin) publicly, and men privately. Mercury was with Jim Hutton (played by Aaron McCusker in Bohemian Rhapsody) for seven years, until the time of his death. Hutton was a hair-dresser and kept his job even after moving into Mercury’s mansion. Hutton died in 2010 of cancer. Austin, meanwhile, was married twice. First, to painter Piers Cameron, with whom she had two sons. Then, to businessman Nick Holford, whom she divorced after five years.
When Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS, Austin was one of the people who took care of him, along with Hutton. “I lost my family, really, when Freddie died,” Austin told. “He was everything to me, apart from my sons. He was like no one I had met before.” Upon his death in 1991, Mercury left her and her sons his 28-room house and half his $75 million fortune, inciting jealousy among his former bandmates. Mercury also gave Austin the responsibility of burying his ashes in a secret location. “He didn’t want anyone trying to dig him up as has happened to some famous people. Fans can be deeply obsessive. He wanted it to remain a secret and it will remain so,” Austin told.

Family, Father, Mother, and Education

Ed Gein was born on 27 August 1906. Henry and his younger brother Gein lived on a rural farm near Plainfield. His father WI. George Gein was a tanner and carpenter and was drunk almost time. His mother Augusta was the real power of the house. She was a religious fanatic who constantly warned her sons about the sins of premarital s*x and railed against “evil” women.

His father died in 1940. His brother Henry died four years later fighting a marsh fire. Although it was suspected that Ed might have killed him. Ed stayed at the family farm with his mother and never stayed out of the surrounding few counties. When his mother died of a stroke in 1945, Ed was left all alone at the “tender” age of 39. He locked her bedroom and the rest of his house off and living in just the kitchen and one other room.

Ed Gein Mother
Ed Gein Mother

Ed Gein was shy, and classmates and teachers remembered him as having strange manners, such as seemingly random laughter as if he were laughing at his own personal jokes. To make matters worse, his mother punished him whenever he tried to make friends. Despite his poor social development, he did fairly well in school, particularly in reading.

When young, his mother forbids him to have friends or date girls, but as he got older he never dated either. Socially, Gein was a mess, only allowing himself to love his mother. Part of this is because he was socially stunted as a child, the other the beginning of pure evil brewing inside Ed Gein, the monster.

In hindsight maybe this was for the best. Had Gein been socially active it could have gone one of two ways. First, he meets someone that helps set him straight. What if he is already pure evil? This could have kick-started a serial killing murder rampage across the small town much sooner (with a much higher body count). Also, for those that didn’t get murdered they would realize (after his arrest) how they almost got butchered by one of the most brutal killers of all time.

Murder of Bernice Worden

On November 16, 1957, Bernice Worden was reported missing from her Hardware store in Plainfield, with the money account register also gone and a trail of blood leading out the rear. Her son Frank, a law officer, was suspicious of Gein, and therefore the reclusive man was soon apprehended at a neighbor’s house. The authorities sent to Gein’s home that night were greeted by the gruesome sight of Worden’s headless, gutted body hanging from the ceiling.

Later investigation yielded more shocking things, including organs in jars and skulls used as soup bowls. Under questioning, Gein confirmed to killing Worden and Hogan, three years earlier. Additionally, he admitted to effort numerous corpses for keeping apart body parts.
He admitted practicing necrophilia and fashioning masks, and suits out of skin to wear round the home. According to evidence, authorities attempted to attach him to other murders and disappearances from recent years but were unable to draw any definitive conclusions.
Gein’s lawyer, William Belter, entered a plea of clean-handed by reason of insanity, and in January 1958, Gein was found unfit to face trial. He was committed to Central State Hospital, where he variously worked as a mason, carpenter’s assistant, and medical center aide.

Trial

On November 21, 1957, Gein was arraigned on one count of first-degree murder in Waushara County Court, where he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Gein was diagnosed with schizophrenia and found mentally incompetent, thus unfit for trial. He was sent to the Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, a maximum-security facility in Waupun, Wisconsin, and later transferred to the Mendota State Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.

In 1968, doctors determined Gein was “mentally able to confer with counsel and participate in his defense”. The trial began on November 7, 1968, and lasted one week. A psychiatrist testified that Gein had told him that he did not know whether the killing of Bernice Worden was intentional or accidental. Gein had told him that while he examined a gun in Worden’s store, the gun went off, killing Worden.

Gein testified that after trying to load a bullet into the rifle, it discharged. He said he had not aimed the rifle at Worden, and did not remember anything else that happened that morning. At the request of the defense, Gein’s trial was held without a jury, with Judge Robert H. Gollmar presiding. Gein was found guilty by Gollmar on November 14. A second trial dealt with Gein’s sanity.

After testimony by doctors for the prosecution and defense, Gollmar ruled Gein “not guilty by reason of insanity” and ordered him committed to Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Gein spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital. Judge Gollmar wrote, “Due to prohibitive costs, Gein was tried for only one murder that of Mrs. Worden. He also admitted to killing Mary Hogan.”

Death

Ed Gein died of lung cancer on 26 July 1984, in ‘Goodland Hall’ at the ‘Mendota Mental Health Institute.’ His body was buried at the ‘Plainfield Cemetery.’ After the years, visitors demolished the gravestone by chipping off pieces. In the year 2000, the maximum part of the gravestone was stolen. It was recovered the following year and is currently maintained by a museum in Waushara County.

Movies

The story of Gein’s inhuman activities, particularly his devotion to a dead mother, strongly influenced Robert Bloch’s 1959 novel Psycho, which was appeared to the big screen the following year by Alfred Hitchcock.

Additionally, Gein functioned as the inspiration of other infamous movie villains. These characters used in the following movies Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Buffalo Bill (The Silence of the Lambs), and has been referenced in numerous songs over the years.

His crimes paved the way for a new genre in arts called ‘black humor.’ Examples of this include the song ‘Dead Skin Mask’ from the ‘Slayer’ album ‘Seasons in the Abyss’ (1990), ‘Nothing to Gein’ from Mudvayne’s album ‘L.D. 50’ (2001), and ‘Ed Gein’ from The Ziggens’ album ‘Rusty Never Sleeps’ (1992).

Facts

  • Ed Gein Grew Up Isolated, On A Farm in Plainfield.
  • Every Afternoon Was Bible Study Time.
  • His classmates recall him as having strange mannerisms, like randomly laughing to himself in the back of the room.
  • Henry, Ed’s brother, eventually got married but worried about Ed’s attachment to their mother. He mentioned this to Ed several times, but it would cause Ed to be hurt.
  • On May 16, 1944, Henry and Ed were burning vegetation on the property when the fire got out of control. After the fire was extinguished, Ed reported his brother as missing. Henry was eventually found, but no foul play was suspected. However, it was later determined that Ed had probably killed his brother.
  • Upon questioning, Gein admitted to having visited three local graveyards up to 40 times during the night while in a trance-like state.
  • Although people had already known that Gein kept shrunken heads in his house, Ed had described them as relics from the Philippines sent by a cousin who had served there in World War II. Later investigation found them to be human faces from the local cemeteries.
  • The character Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was influenced by Gein and his disgusting crimes. The first movie was more suspenseful, but the second one dealt very directly with a den of flesh and skin that included body parts and skin masks, similar to the kind Gein made.
  • Due to the cost of the process, Gein was only ever tried for one murder, that of Mrs. Worden. (Though, he admitted to killing more people.)

ControversiesBettencourt affair, political scandal

Early Life

The only child of Louise Madeleine Berthe (née Doncieux) and Eugène Schueller, the creator of L’Oréal, one of the biggest cosmetics and beauty enterprises in the world, she was born Liliane Henriette Charlotte Schueller on October 21, 1922, in Paris.

After her mother passed away when she was five years old, Liliane became close to her father, who eventually wed her British governess. She began working for her father’s business as an apprentice at the age of 15, labelling shampoo bottles and making cosmetics.

She wed French politician André Bettencourt in 1950; he later ascended to become L’Oréal’s vice chairman and served as a cabinet member in the 1960s and 1970s. Liliane’s father, a Nazi sympathiser, had sponsored and supported La Cagoule in the 1930s; the group’s members were imprisoned in 1937. Mr Bettencourt had been a member of this violent French fascist pro-Nazi organisation.

Personal Life

In 1950, she married French politician André Bettencourt; he eventually rose to become vice chairman of L’Oréal and served in the government in the 1960s and 1970s. Her spouse, along with other La Cagoule members, was granted asylum at L’Oréal after the war despite his politically unfavourable history.

The Bettencourts eventually relocated to a 1951 Art Moderne home on rue de Delabordère in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. Françoise, their only child, was born in 1953.

Controversies

Bettencourt mainly avoided the media and gave only a few interviews. Due to her connection with François-Marie Banier, her alienation from her daughter Françoise, and her suspected sponsorship of right-wing French politicians, notably former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, she came under heavy media scrutiny and notoriety starting in 2007.

She sold D’Arros Island, her private island, to a Seychelles-registered conservation company connected to the Swiss Save our Seas Foundation in August 2012 for £60 million.

The Bettencourt Affair

According to most accounts, Bettencourt and François-Marie Banier first connected in 1987 when he was hired to take her shot for the French magazine Egoste. Banier is a French writer, artist, and celebrity photographer. Banier and Bettencourt became friends during the next years, and she turned into his patron, giving him presents that are said to be worth up to €1.3 billion. These presents include cash, 11 works of art valued at €20 million in 2001, including paintings by Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, Delaunay, and Léger, a surrealist Man Ray picture, and two life insurance policies for €253 million in 2003 and €262 million in 2006.

Bettencourt reportedly transferred the life insurance policies to Banier while she was recuperating from two hospital stints in 2003 and 2006. With a net worth of $30 billion in April 2013, Forbes magazine named Liliane Bettencourt the richest woman in the world in 1999.

Françoise Bettencourt Meyers filed a criminal complaint against Banier in December 2007, less than a month after the passing of her father, charging him with abuse of weakness (or the abuse of a physical or psychological weakness for personal advantage) against Bettencourt.

Brigade Financière Unit

In response to her allegation, the Brigade Financière, the French national police’s financial investigative unit, launched an inquiry. After speaking with Bettencourt’s personnel, they made the decision to bring the matter before a Nanterre court for a trial in September 2009. In December 2009, the court postponed making a decision in the case until April 2010 (then postponed to July 2010) pending the findings of a mental health assessment of Bettencourt. Bettencourt, however, objected to taking these tests.

Following the disclosure of information regarding cassette recordings made by Bettencourt’s butler, Pascal Bonnefoy, the trial was once again postponed until fall 2010, at the earliest.

The butler recorded over 21 hours of dialogue on the recordings, which he later gave to the police, out of concern that Bettencourt may be deceived into believing she had Alzheimer’s illness. According to the tapes, Bettencourt designated Banier as her “single heir,” except for the L’Oréal shares that make up the majority of her fortune and that she had already designated for her daughter and two grandchildren.

After a string of litigation, Bettencourt and her daughter reunited on December 6, 2010. Banier allegedly fell out of favour with Bettencourt after their separation, and she finally left him out of her will. However, their disagreement flared up again during the next summer when Bettencourt asserted that her daughter need psychological assistance.

Victim of Ponzi Scheme

According to reports, Bettencourt lost €22 million and was one of Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme’s most well-known victims. She was the first benefactor of a fund administered by René-Thierry Magon de la Villehuchet’s Access International Advisors. On December 22, 2008, De la Villehuchet committed suicide when it was revealed that his funds had invested a sizeable portion of their wealth with Madoff.

Scandals in the political domain

Following the release of more information on the tape recordings made by her butler, Bettencourt got involved in a high-profile political scandal in France in June 2010. This was all part of the Bettencourt incident. The talks between Bettencourt and her financial advisor, Patrice de Maistre, that were supposedly captured on the recordings suggest that Bettencourt may have evaded taxes by maintaining a sizeable sum of money in secret Swiss bank accounts. A conversation between Bettencourt and French Budget Minister Éric Woerth is also purportedly heard on the recordings.

Woerth was spearheading a prominent campaign to identify affluent tax evaders while simultaneously looking for work for his wife to manage Bettencourt’s money. Furthermore, while Woerth was the budget minister, Bettencourt was given a tax break worth €30 million.

Bettencourt reportedly transferred the life insurance policies to Banier while she was recuperating from two hospital stints in 2003 and 2006. With a net worth of $30 billion in April 2013, Forbes magazine named Liliane Bettencourt the richest woman in the world in 1999.

Françoise Bettencourt

Françoise Bettencourt Meyers filed a criminal complaint against Banier in December 2007, less than a month after the passing of her father, charging him with abuse of weakness (or the abuse of a physical or psychological weakness for personal advantage) against Bettencourt.

A few days later, she claimed French police had forced her to change her evidence regarding Nicolas Sarkozy’s illicit payments. Both Mr Sarkozy and Mr Woerth assert their innocence. Following these accusations, French police searched de Maistre’s residence and workplace. De Maistre is the executive of Clymène, the business that Bettencourt owns and uses to handle her riches. Under French law, political contributions to parties are limited to €7,500 and to individuals to €4,600. Donations over €150 must be made by check, explicitly identifying the donor.

Liliane Bettencourt Education

Liliane Bettencourt did not have a formal education, but at the age of 15, she began working at her father’s business labelling and blending cosmetics. In 1950, she wed Andre Bettencourt, a minister in the French cabinet.

Louise died in 1957, leaving Loreal to Liliane. With a net worth of nearly $44 billion in 2017, Liliane was the richest woman in the world.

Professional Career

When Bettencourt’s father passed away in 1957, she received the L’Oréal wealth and was made the company’s major shareholder. The business went public in 1963, although Bettencourt kept the bulk of the stock. She traded roughly half of her investment in 1974 for a three per cent (3%) stake in Nestlé S.A. out of concern that the business might be nationalised following the French elections.

Bettencourt owned 185,661,879 (30.5 per cent) of L’Oréal’s outstanding shares as of December 2012, with 76,441,389 (12.56 per cent) of those shares being held in trust (for her daughter). Ownership of the balance is as follows: 229,933,941 (37.76%) of the shares are held by the public, and 178,381,021 (29.78%) are owned by Nestlé, and the remaining shares are kept as treasury stock or in the corporate savings plan.

In accordance with a shareholders’ agreement, Nestlé and the Bettencourt family cooperate. On February 13, 2012, Bettencourt’s term as a board director came to an end, and Jean-Victor, her grandson, was named in her place. The husband of Bettencourt’s daughter, Jean-Pierre Meyers, and her daughter both serve on the board of directors. Bettencourt passed away on September 21, 2017. In Neuilly-sur-Seine, Église Saint-Pierre hosted the burial ceremony.

Philanthropic activities

La Fondation Bettencourt Schueller was established in 1987 by Bettencourt, her husband, and their daughter to promote and advance humanitarian, cultural, and medical projects. Its headquarters are at Neuilly-sur-Seine. The foundation, which has assets of $150 million and an estimated $15 million in yearly spending, allocates around 55% of its money to scientific education and research, 33% to humanitarian and social causes, and 12% to culture and the arts.

The new Monet wing of the Musée Marmottan Monet was partially funded by the foundation in 2008. On the other hand, Bettencourt and Peter Brabeck-Letmathe were jointly “granted” a Black Planet Award in 2007 for spreading tainted baby food, controlling water supplies, and allowing child labour.

Professional Career

In 1961, Carl Icahn started working for Dreyfus Corporation as a stockbroker. He joined Tessel, Patrick & Co. as an options manager in 1963, and then transferred to Gruntal & Co. Icahn established Icahn & Co., a firm that specialized in risk arbitrage and options trading, in 1968 with investments totalling $400,000 from his uncle M. Elliot Schnall and $150,000 of his own money.

In his first takeover effort, he gained control of Tappan in 1978 and compelled the sale of the business to Electrolux, forcing a profit of $2.7 million, or twice his initial investment. In 1979, Icahn purchased Bayswater Realty & Capital Corporation. He bought ACF Industries in 1983, then sold the company’s shares to Phillips Petroleum in 1985 for a $50 million profit.

Icahn purchased 50% of Trans World Airlines in 1985 by pooling his finances with investor funds and monies borrowed from banks; in 1988, he completed the acquisition of the company through a leveraged buyout. Icahn used “asset stripping”—the methodical sale of TWA’s assets—to pay off his debts, earning him the moniker “corporate raider.” He gave American Airlines the London routes of TWA in 1991 for $445 million.

He left TWA with a $540 million debt in addition to a $469 million profit. To sell TWA tickets, he established lowestfares.com and bought Ramy El-stake Batrawi in Global Leisure Travel. Icahn attempted to acquire 89 per cent of U.S. Steel for $8 billion in a hostile takeover in October 1986; the attempt was abandoned in January 1987.

He earned $200 million in profit when he sold his $1 billion investment in the business in 1991. Icahn made a $700 million profit in June 1989 when he sold his stock in Texaco for $2 billion in the largest share transaction ever on the New York Stock Exchange.

He made a $375 million acquisition bid for Pan Am in 1990. He acquired a 6.6 per cent stake in Western Company of North America in 1994 as BJ Services was acquiring the company. Icahn made a $125 million profit when he sold his 7.3 per cent stake in RJR Nabisco in February 1997.

In a conflict with Ronald Perelman, Icahn acquired ownership of Marvel Comics in June 1997. He submitted a second bid for Pan Am in March 1998 with a $43 million offer. Icahn was the leader of an investment group that bought a 5% share in RJR Nabisco in December 1998 and put pressure on the management to split the company’s food and tobacco businesses.

Icahn’s Riverdale, LLC loaned $100 million to Genesis intermedia in July 2001 in exchange for options to purchase 5.5 million of the company’s shares at an average price of $5.09. In 2004, Carl Icahn started raising $3 billion to launch Icahn Partners, a hedge fund.

He acquired equity holdings in Time Warner and Blockbuster Video. Icahn bought a significant amount of stock in 2004 following the announcement by Mylan of a $4 billion stock proposal to acquire King Pharmaceuticals. He then threatened a proxy battle, asking shareholders to vote against the merger. Mylan gave up on trying to buy King in February 2005.

The wired portion of XO Communications’ business would be sold to Carl Icahn, who was then the company’s chairman and a significant shareholder, for $700 million. The proceeds would be used to settle debts and to repurchase its preferred stock from Icahn for around $600 million.

Then, Icahn would have fully owned the wired company and retained ownership of his 60% interest in XO. R2 and other minority shareholders blocked the transaction through the legal system in 2008, which charged Icahn with penalties due to his conflict of interest, even though Icahn owned the majority of the company and the board of directors had declared the deal to be in the best interest of shareholders.

In August 2006, Carl Icahn purchased stock in Take-Two Interactive, a publisher of video games. By 2009, he had raised his stake to 11.3 per cent, making him the second-largest shareholder in the business. He bought a 9.2 per cent investment in Telik, a biotech business that conducts cancer research, in January 2007. Additionally, he bought 6.1 million shares of WCI Communities, which Lennar later acquired. Icahn, who owned 3% of Motorola, was unsuccessful in his bid to join the board of directors in a May 2007 election. The board of directors of Lear Corporation approved Icahn’s $2.3 billion buyout offer on February 9, 2007.

In February 2007, Icahn made a $50 million investment in Motricity, a mobile content delivery technology company based in North Carolina. A few months before Oracle Corporation announced its acquisition of BEA Systems, which Icahn supported, he upped his investment in BEA Systems to 13.22% in September 2007.

Icahn gradually boosted his ownership of Biogen beginning in 2007. Icahn sold his Nevada casino holdings, including the Stratosphere Las Vegas, Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, Arizona Charlie’s Decatur, and Aquarius Casino Resort, which was run by American Casino & Entertainment Properties, a division of Icahn Enterprises, to a division of Goldman Sachs in April 2007 for $1.3 billion, or $1 billion more than he paid for the properties.

Icahn sued Motorola in March 2008 to get four seats on the company’s board and compel the sale of its mobile division. Icahn bought a significant amount of Yahoo! stock in May 2008 and, when the board of directors rejected a buyout offer from Microsoft, vowed to launch a proxy battle to have them removed.

Instead, he compelled Yahoo’s board to increase to eleven members, including Icahn and two additional individuals of his choosing. Icahn started a blog called The Icahn Report in June 2008.

Imclone was eventually sold to Eli Lilly and Company for $6.5 billion in cash in September/October 2008 after Bristol-Myers Squibb’s attempted purchase of the drug was denied. Icahn was involved in both transactions. He sued Realogy regarding a potential debt swap in December 2008.

Icahn took part in a proxy conflict for Amylin in April 2009. He proposed to pay $0.55 per share for the shares of XO he did not already own in September 2009. Later, he increased his bid to $0.80, but it was eventually rejected. He left the Yahoo! board of directors in October, and by February of the following year, his holdings had fallen from a peak of 75 million shares to just 12 million.

Through a division of his Icahn Enterprises LP, Icahn paid around $150 million for the Fontainebleau Las Vegas in February 2010. He was one of the lenders who, in March, paid $200 million for Tropicana Casino & Resort Atlantic City, saving it from bankruptcy.

He made an unsuccessful acquisition attempt for Lionsgate Films in March 2011. He declared the acquisition of an 8.54 per cent stake in Lawson Software in May 2010. Icahn increased his ownership of Mentor Graphics from 6.9% in May 2010 to 14% in July. Icahn made an unsuccessful offer to purchase the company for around $1.86 billion in cash in February 2011. Mentor attempted to respond by implementing a shareholder rights plan, but this failed to deter Icahn.

In January 2011, Carl Icahn made a $10.2 billion purchase offer for Clorox. He had amassed a 9.08 per cent ownership in the business by the end of February. Icahn announced a 10% ownership investment in Netflix in October 2012. He attempted to take over the Oshkosh Corporation board of directors in November 2012.

Icahn was one of the 40 hedge fund managers with the highest salaries according to Forbes in February 2013. Icahn acquired a 9.2 per cent interest in Nuance Communications by April 2013. Icahn sued Dell and its board on August 2, 2013, to block CEO Michael Dell’s $24.4 billion takeover offer in favour of his alleged upcoming offer.

In October 2013, Icahn had 4.7 million shares of Apple Inc. Icahn bought over 61 million shares of Talisman Energy in the same month, which caused the share price to soar. He also sold roughly half of his Netflix stock that month, making over $800 million in profit in less than a year.

He purchased a 12.5% stake in the maker of medical equipment and diagnostics Hologic in November 2013. Icahn contributed another $500 million to Apple Inc. in January 2014. Icahn pressured eBay to execute the corporate spin-off of PayPal in January 2014 as well. A proxy war sprang out as a result, but it was resolved by April.

Icahn purchased Talisman Energy in October 2014. He sold his shares two months later after the company’s stock price dropped by 71%. Icahn invested $100 million in Lyft on May 15, 2015. Icahn recruited CBRE Group in November 2015 to find purchasers for the unfinished Fontainebleau Las Vegas.

He exchanged his interests in eBay for shares in PayPal in November 2015 as well. Icahn reported a 7.13 per cent position in Xerox in November 2015 as well. Icahn made a purchase offer for Pep Boys in December 2015. Additionally, he increased his holding in Cheniere Energy to 13.8 per cent, making him the company’s largest stakeholder.

Carl Icahn sold the unfinished Fontainebleau Resort Las Vegas for $600 million in August 2017, more than four times what he had originally paid. In addition to holding shares in Cheniere Energy and Freeport-McMoRan, all of which saw a decline in value, Icahn reported in January 2016 that he owned a 4.66 per cent investment in Gannett Company. Icahn sold his Apple stock in April 2016 because of worries about the company’s ties to China.

Icahn upped his interest in Herbalife Nutrition to 21 per cent in August 2016. In addition, in October 2016, Icahn shut down the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City, alleging a $350 million deficit over several years and the inability to resolve a labour dispute. Almost 3,000 individuals experienced job losses.

He expanded his stake in The Hertz Corporation in November 2016, following a sharp decrease in the stock price of the rental car company. Icahn boosted his investments in Navistar International and Herbalife Nutrition while selling out of Allergan and Nuance Communications and acquiring a 9.7% position in Conduent.

Icahn sold all 55.3 million shares, or his 39 per cent ownership in Hertz Global, for 72 cents each in May 2020. Almost $2 billion of his investment was gone. Icahn, who owned 200 shares of the firm, proposed two candidates for election to McDonald’s board of directors in February 2022, possibly kicking off a proxy battle.

Icahn wants to put pressure on McDonald’s to upgrade the living circumstances of the pigs reared by its suppliers.

Carl Icahn Donations

The Carl C. Icahn Centre for Science and the Icahn Scholar Program at the Connecticut prep school Choate Rosemary Hall bears his name, as does Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island and the Icahn Centre for Science in New York City. With an endowment worth around $400,000 each year, this charity provides for 10 students’ tuition, lodging and board, books, and supplies each year for four years (freshman to senior).

Icahn donated a sizable gift to his alma school Princeton University to support the Carl C. Icahn Laboratory for Integrated Genomics, a genomics research facility that carries his name.

A trustee of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, which he also generously supported, named a building the Icahn Medical Institute in his honour and renamed the Mount Sinai School of Medicine the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2013 in return. The Eric Schadt-led Icahn Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology has changed its name.

Icahn House, a 65-unit building for homeless families made up of single women with children and pregnant single women, was erected by his charity, the Children’s Rescue Fund, which also runs Icahn House East and Icahn House West, two homeless shelters in New York City.

Icahn pledged to donate more than half of his wealth when he signed up for the Giving Pledge list in 2010. Icahn, an activist investor who has partnered with the Humane Society of the United States to achieve its goal of ending the sourcing of pigs produced in gestation crates, is pressuring McDonald’s to fulfil this commitment.

Political Information About Him

Donald Trump received Carl Icahn’s support in the 2016 US presidential election. He also disclosed the creation of a super PAC with a $150 million pledge to promote corporate tax reform, particularly about tax inversions, which happen when businesses relocate their headquarters from the United States to another country with lower tax rates.

As the presumed Republican candidate for president, Trump declared that he will put Icahn forth as Treasury Secretary of the United States. He chose Steven Mnuchin as his replacement, nevertheless. On December 21, 2016, it was revealed that Carl Icahn would work for President Donald Trump as a special advisor on regulatory reform.

He would support Trump in an “individual capacity” rather than on behalf of the government, and since he wouldn’t have any “specific duties,” he wouldn’t have to give up his business interests. On August 18, 2017, Icahn resigned from this position, citing a wish to avoid interfering with Neomi Rao’s duties as administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.

Icahn sold some of his assets in a stock that was sensitive to changes in the price of steel in February 2018, only days before the Trump administration announced a 25 percent tariff on steel imports, preventing him from suffering a $6 million loss. Icahn explicitly questioned Scott Pruitt about his views on the EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard when the President had Pruitt interviewed for the position of Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Icahn personally discussed his proposed modifications to the ethanol rule with Gary Cohn and President Trump. If Icahn proposed to pass, CVR Energy, of which he owns 82 percent, would save $205.9 million annually.

When President Trump issued an exception to his regulation freeze to increase the tax benefit of master limited partnerships, the Sugar Land, Texas oil refinery profited. Following President Trump’s victory, the value of CVR Energy’s stock increased by $455 million.
