Barnsley
Stones signed a professional contract in December 2011 after graduating from the Barnsley junior programme. He made his Championship debut on 17 March 2012, in a 4–0 loss to Reading at Oakwell, replacing Scott Wiseman after 52 minutes.
On his debut appearance for Barnsley, he equalised before halftime in a League Cup first round encounter away to Rochdale on 11 August 2012, which resulted in a 4–3 triumph after extra time. A week later, he started his first league game, a 1–0 triumph against Middlesbrough.
Everton

Later years at Everton
Stones was sent off in Everton’s 4–1 away win against Young Boys in the UEFA Europa League last 32 on February 19, 2015, after surrendering a penalty kick with a foul on Guillaume Hoarau, who went on to miss the penalty attempt.
