Jen Psaki Career

  • Jen Psaki is a registered Democrat who has spent the majority of her career working for Democratic politicians. She served on the political campaigns of two Iowa natives in 2001. She worked on Senator Tom Harkin’s re-election campaign as well as Tom Vilsack’s governor campaign. Both men were victorious in their respective elections.
  • Psaki worked as a deputy press secretary for then-candidate John Kerry during the 2004 election campaign. Kerry would be the Democratic nominee in that year’s election, but he would lose to then-President George W. Bush.
  • Psaki went on to work as a regional press secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee after Kerry’s campaign concluded, a group of members of Congress that worked to support incumbent Democratic lawmakers’ campaigns as well as promote Democratic candidates in available seats across Congress.
  • Between 2005 and 2006, Psaki worked as the communications director for Congressman Joseph Crowley.
  • Psaki continued to work for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and it was during this period that she met Greg Mecher, her future husband.
  • Psaki, on the other hand, would join Obama’s campaign during the 2008 election cycle. She was then-candidate Obama’s travelling press secretary, and she planned to join the Obama administration full-time as soon as he was elected. Initially, she served as the Obama Administration’s Deputy Press Secretary, but she was then promoted to the position of Deputy Communications Director. She held this post under the Obama Administration from 2009 to 2011.
  • Jen Psaki announced her departure from the Obama Administration in September 2011 to work for the public relations firm Global Strategy Group. She worked in the firm’s Washington, D.C. as a managing director and senior vice president.
  • She wouldn’t be able to stay away from politics for long. Psaki was asked to be Barack Obama’s press secretary for his re-election campaign in 2012 in less than six months. If Obama were to win re-election, he would invite Psaki to rejoin his government. By February 2013, Psaki would be the United States State Department’s spokeswoman.
  • When Psaki returned to the Obama administration, speculation swirled that she might take over as White House Press Secretary from Jay Carney, who had recently resigned. However, Carney’s role was subsequently taken by Josh Earnest, and Psaki stayed in her previous position.

  • Within a year, Psaki was a frequent contributor to CNN’s political coverage. She stayed with CNN until Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election.
  • Jen Psaki was requested to join the transition team for Biden and Harris. She quit her post as a CNN contributor to work for the new administration as it prepared for the January inauguration. Psaki accepted a post as White House Press Secretary by the end of November 2020, which she presently occupies.
  • Psaki’s maiden briefing took place on January 20, 2021, on the eve of the Biden-Harris inauguration.
  • Jen Psaki has stated that she intends to stay on as White House Press Secretary for at least another year or two. Psaki has been questioned by reporters on Biden’s initiatives, specifically the vaccine mandate, COVID data, and the contentious Build Back Better legislation.
  • Psaki is an expert at maintaining her cool in front of a bunch of White House Presidential Correspondents who aren’t always supportive of the current president or his views. During the United States’ unexpected pullout from Afghanistan in August 2021, Psaki fielded inquiries on a regular basis.
  • The press will ask Psaki questions that appear to be beyond of her purview, such as about President Biden’s thoughts on specific matters. Psaki is always well-prepared with responses. This, however, is most likely a reaction to criticism levelled at Psaki early in her stint as Press Secretary. Psaki would tell reporters that she would circle back to a topic at a later time in response to some questions. Psaki used the statement several times, and social media mocked her effort at professionalism during press briefings.
  • Psaki was also chastised for statements she made about candidates in the Virginia gubernatorial election in October and early November 2021. Psaki may have broken the Hatch Act with her comments, according to several political monitoring groups. These groups misinterpreted Psaki’s words as an endorsement of then-candidate Terry McAuliffe, in violation of the Hatch Act’s prohibition on government employees engaging in political activity while on the job. However, after McAuliffe was beaten by political newcomer Glenn Youngkin, the buzz went down.
