Life of Ashley Young

Young was born in the Hertfordshire town of Stevenage. He has one elder brother and two football-playing younger brothers, Lewis, who made his Watford debut in 2008, and Kyle, who was training at the Arsenal Academy in April 2009. Young joined the Watford youth system when he was ten years old. He grew up there until the summer of 2001, when he was notified by the club that he would not be receiving a full scholarship and would have to search for another team. Despite being turned down, Young remained with the club on a part-time basis, working hard to develop his game and establish he belonged in the first squad.

Marcelo began playing futsal at the age of nine, and by 13, he was on the books of the Fluminense team in Rio de Janeiro. Despite coming from a very poor background, his grandfather convinced him to continue playing football.

Real Madrid

• Real Madrid signed Marcelo during the January 2007 transfer window. In announcing his arrival, Ramón Calderón said, “He is an important signing for us. He is a young player who will bring freshness into the squad, and he fits in with our plan to add younger players to the squad.”. We’re very happy because he’s a pearl that half of Europe wanted.” Many spectators hailed him as Brazilian and Real Madrid great Roberto Carlos’ potential successor in the left-back role.
• Marcelo made his league debut as a substitute on 7 January 2007 against Deportivo La Corua. As of 14 April 2007, the then coach Fabio Capello gave Marcelo his debut for Real Madrid against Racing de Santander.
• Real Madrid lost 2–1 in a controversial game. Marcelo started nearly all of Madrid’s league games under Bernd Schuster during the 2007–08 campaign. He was able to become a very important player for Real Madrid due to his speed, ability to run across the field, attack, and defense.
• Under new manager Juande Ramos, Marcelo spent much of the 2009 season on the bench as a deputy to the defensive-minded Gabriel Heinze following a series of poor performances. Marcelo was deployed as a winger on more than one occasion by Ramos, who adapted well to Marcelo’s new role.
• After receiving a heel flick from Gonzalo Higuain, he slotted the ball past the goalkeeper in Real Madrid’s 4–0 annihilation of Sporting Gijón. Marcelo will be positioned as a winger in Marcelo’s future, but he will also play defense when necessary. Real Madrid’s Marcelo scored his second goal for the club in a win over Almeria, a powerful strike from outside the box with his weaker right foot.
• He scored the only goal of the game against Huelva on 18 April 2009, his third goal in his Real Madrid career. As a result, he scored his fourth goal against Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in April 2009.
• With the next head coach Manuel Pellegrini, Marcelo consistently featured in the starting XI for his versatility along the left flank in both offensive and defensive roles.
• In 2009–10, he reached the top of the assist charts in La Liga as a left-winger under Pellegrini. His strong performance in Real Madrid’s 2009–10 campaign earned him a contract extension with the club until June 2015. 2009–10 marked his breakthrough year at Real Madrid.
• Under new coach José Mourinho, Marcelo was back playing his natural position as a left back. With defensive steel and attacking intent, he earned the coach’s admiration by starting all league games.
• Marcelo was named to the 55-man shortlist for the FIFA World XI on 25 November 2010 and scored his first goal of the season in a 1–0 win over Espanyol on 13 February. The match against Lyon in the Champions League was terrific.
• The Real Madrid midfielder showed his attacking flair and defensive skills as he opened the scoring with his first Champions League goal and assisted Karim Benzema’s goal. He was named Man of the Match as Real went on to win 3–0 and progress to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2004.
• In the Camp Nou, Marcelo then continued his fine season by scoring in the second leg of the semi-finals against Barcelona. Although Real Madrid won the game 1–1, they lost by an aggregate score of 3–1 since they lost 2–0 at home in the first leg. • Marcelo signed a contract extension that keeps him at the club until summer 2022 on 13 September 2017. While playing in the 2017–18 UEFA Champions League, he made eleven appearances and scored three goals when Madrid won their third consecutive and 13th overall Champions League title by winning 3–1 against Liverpool in the final.
• As a result, he made 34 appearances, while winning the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup for the third consecutive time.
• He made 15 appearances during the league season, as Real Madrid won the 2019–20 La Liga.
• He played sporadically in the 2020–21 season due to injuries and was replaced by Ferland Mendy at left-back. All told, he played in 19 matches in all competitions for Real Madrid, finishing second in the league behind Atlético Madrid.
• It was announced on 16 June 2021 that he will become the captain of Real Madrid at the start of the 2021–22 season, as he has been a member of the team for the longest time after Sergio Ramos, making him the first foreign captain since 1904.
