Early Life and Career

Shane Battier was born in Birmingham, Michigan, on September 9, 1978. He was raised in the suburbs of Detroit. His father, Ed, is a former high school basketball coach who now runs a youth basketball league. His mother, Lynn, is a former middle school English teacher. Shane has two older sisters, Jessica and Jennifer.

Battier played high school basketball at Detroit Country Day School. As a senior, he was named Mr. Basketball for the state of Michigan. He then went on to play college basketball at Duke University. In his four years at Duke, Battier helped lead the team to two NCAA National Championships (2001 and 2002). He was named the National Defensive Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002.

After college, he was drafted by the Houston Rockets as the sixth overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. He spent eight seasons with the Rockets before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2010. He spent two seasons with the Grizzlies before being traded back to Houston in 2012. Shane retired from professional basketball in 2014 after 12 seasons in the NBA.

Personal Life

Battier is now actively involved in several philanthropic endeavors. He has donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and launched his foundation, The Battier Take Charge Foundation, which provides scholarships to deserving students. In addition, he has also worked with a number of initiatives designed to provide support to local communities across the country.

In addition to his work with charities, Battier is also an active investor and entrepreneur. He has launched a number of businesses, including a sports management company and an online media platform. He is also a partner in a venture capital firm.

Battier has been married for almost two decades to his high school sweetheart, Heidi Ufer. In 2008, they welcomed their first son, Zeke Edward, and had a daughter, Eloise, three years later.

In 2010, Battier received the honor of being chosen the seventh-smartest athlete by Sporting News. He has continued to set himself apart, both as the co-owner of D1 Sports Training in Memphis, TN, and board member of Yext.

His latest endeavor includes the potential launch of the East Asia Super League, a new basketball league in the Asian region. Discussions began in December 2021 and include other former NBA players.
