Thibaut Courtois’s bio is quite interesting since everyone knows about his goalkeeping abilities. Without further ado, let’s begin. Thibaut Nicolas Marc Courtois was born in Bree, Belgium, on the 11th day of May 1992. He was born to his mother, Gitte Courtois and father, Thierry Courtois.

Courtois was not born to be a football player; he was born to play volleyball. He was clumsy and occasionally absent-minded as a young boy. During a forward roll at gymnastics, he admitted that he was thinking “too much” and ended up knocking out his teacher. He said, “I have never been a hero in gymnastics.”

During his childhood, accidents were a frequent occurrence. More than once, his mother, Gitte Lambrechts, a physiotherapist, had to drive him to the hospital. He had a broken ankle, a jammed finger, a handlebar in his groin, a gaping wound in his head after colliding with a chair, and so on. Life was never boring.

Lambrechts and Thierry Courtois, both semi-professional volleyball players, had already decided to let Courtois decide which sport he would play when he was born on 11 May 1992 at the Maas en Kempen hospital in Bree, Belgium.

Although they took him to volleyball games, it wasn’t long before Courtois told his parents he wanted to focus on football. He was five. In Belgium, you cannot join a club to play organized football until you are six years old. However, after Thibaut Courtois had done enough crying and nagging, the president of a local club, Bilzen, allowed the youngster to join his youth club.

Courtois began his career as a left-back for local side Bilzen V.V., not as a goalkeeper. Despite being 18 months younger than his teammates, Courtois looked strong and powerful. “He was a robust and energetic kid,” recalls his first coach, Bart Theunissen. “A quiet guy, but he was already no-nonsense at that time. We didn’t have a real goalkeeper, since we rotated players, as is normal at that age. But you could see he had some sharp reflexes.”

In no time at all, the scouts of Racing Genk, the local first division club, noticed his talent. He was invited to one of their trial days when he was eight and soon after he joined the company in 1999. It was there that he was transformed into a goalkeeper.

Genk’s Courtois graduated from the youth system at age 18, and he played a critical role in the team’s victory in the Belgian Pro League. He joined Chelsea for £8 million in July 2011 and was immediately loaned to Atletico Madrid. After that, history passed by, as they say.

Six days later, as the Premier League season opened with a home game against Swansea City, he was sent off for giving away a penalty with a foul on Bafétimbi Gomis, who converted the penalty past the replacement Asmir Begovic for a 2 – 2 draw.

• The speculation about Courtois moving to Real Madrid resurfaced after he mentioned he wanted to be closer to his children following the 2017–18 season.
