Farhan Akhtar was born in a Muslim family on 9 January 1974in Mumbai. His father’s name is Javed Akhtar, a renowned lyricist, and scriptwriter and his mother’s name is Honey Irani, an actress, and screenwriter. He has an elder sister, Zoya Akhtar, a well-known Indian director and screenwriter.  Farhan’s step-mother is the veteran Bollywood actress, Shabana Azmi.  Farhan was in a serious relationship with the actress Suman Ranganathan, which ended in 1995. Later, he got married to Riya Jain, but their marriage did not last long.

Later, Farhan and Adhuna Bhabani were in a live-in relationship for 3 years and got married in 2000. The couple has two daughters, Shakya and Akira. After 16 years of their marriage, Farhan and Adhuna decided to part their ways. Reportedly, the reason for their divorce was Farhan’s closeness with his Wazir (2016) co-star Aditi Rao Hydari. There were rumors that while shooting for Rock On 2 (2016), he started dating his co-star Shraddha Kapoor, and it was Shraddha’s father, Shakti Kapoor, who was not happy with their relationship. In 2019, he started dating Shibani Dandekar. Shibani is a well-known Indian VJ, model, singer, and anchor.

Life Journey

Farhan Akhtar completed his schooling at Maneckji Cooper School in Mumbai. He joined H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai but was suspended from the college in the 2nd year due to his short attendance.

When he was 17 years old, he started working as a trainee in the cinematography and direction department of Yash Chopra’s film Lamhe (1991). After that, he worked with ‘Script Shop; an advertisement production house for almost three years. He worked as an assistant director with Pankaj Parashar for the Bollywood film Himalay Putra (1997). In 1999, he started a production company, Excel Entertainment, along with Ritesh Sidhwani, an Indian film producer.

Career

In 2001, he debuted as a writer and director in the Hindi film ‘Dil Chahta Hai’and won the National Film Award for the same. In 2008, he debuted as a producer in the Bollywood film ‘Don-The Chase Begins Again: Some of his films as a producer and director are Don 2: The King Is Back (2011), Fukrey (2013), and Dil Dhadakne Do (2015).

In 2008, Akhtar made his solo acting and singing debut in a musical film titled Rock On!!, for which he wrote the script and also produced. Then he acted in and produced his sister Zoya’s directorial and written debut Luck By Chance, which had Hrithik Roshan and Konkona Sen Sharma in the lead roles.

Next, he acted in a film titled The Fakir of Venice.  Akhtar acted in and produced his next film Karthik Calling Karthik in 2010, a psychological thriller directed by Vijay Lalwani. His next movie, a biopic on Indian athlete Milkha Singh, popularly known as ‘the Flying Sikh’, was entitled ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’.

In 2014, Akhtar acted for the romantic comedy Shaadi Ke Side Effects alongside Vidya Balan, a film directed by Saket Chaudhary and produced by Pritish Nandy. It was a sequel to Pyaar Ke Side Effects (2006).

Next year, Akhtar featured in the supporting role in his sister Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do, an ensemble comedy-drama starring Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, and Anushka Sharma. In 2016, Akhtar played the lead role of an Anti-Terrorist Squad officer in Bejoy Nambiar’s Wazir. In 2017, Akhtar essayed the role of a Dawood Ibrahim-alike mafia don Maqsood in Daddy, co-starring Arjun Rampal. His next release was the ensemble drama Lucknow Central, co-starring Diana Penty, Gippy Grewal, and Deepak Dobriyal.
