In the Central Javan village of Kudus, Michael Hartono was born on October 2nd, 1939. In April 1951, his father, Oei Wie Gwan, bought a tiny Kretek cigarette business called Djarum Gramophon (lit. “gramophone needle”) and changed its name to just Djarum.
