Bipasha Basu completed her schooling at Apeejay High School, Delhi, and Bhavan’s Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir, Kolkata. She went to Bhawanipur Education Society College, Kolkata. Basu dropped her graduation for continuing her career in modeling. In the year 1996, She was recognized by the model Mehr Jesia Rampal, who advised she take up modeling.

Bipasha Basu made her movie debut as a supporting character in Abbas–Mustan’s thriller Ajnabee in 2001. She later did a role in her first Telugu cinema – the action movie Takkari Donga in 2002.
Basu had her first significant success with the paranormal thriller movie Raaz in 2002, which earned her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress nomination. In the same year, Basu starred along with John Abraham in the erotic thriller movie Jism, in which she did a role of a seductive wife.
Basu followed this initial success with roles in a series of commercial failures, including the thrillers Aetbaar, Rudraksha, Rakht – all in 2004 – and the romance Barsaat (2005). She later featured in Prakash Jha’s crime drama Apaharan (2005) and the ensemble comedy No Entry (2005). The latter emerged as financial success, grossing ₹750 million (US$11 million) at the box office.
Basu had seven film releases in 2006. Her role as an executive at a conglomerate in Madhur Bhandarkar’s drama Corporate earned her another nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She then portrayed a character based on Bianca in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara, an adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy Othello.
