Sean Verburg and the rest of his classmates pierced his heart with their words. Denzel made a vow within himself that he would prove them wrong.

In the game, he began to lose all his energy like a wounded lion. Denz found peace with more football and higher energy. In order to become successful, Denzel decided he would build on his mentality, which he believed would complement his poor playing skills.

After successfully applying to Spartan ’20, an amateur football club near Rotterdam, the Rotterdam native started his academy soccer career.

Then he moved on to Smitshoek’s youth, which is 21 minutes or 11.6 kilometers from Rotterdam. Initially, Denzel received assistance from his parents to get to the academy. When he grew older, he used his bicycle to get there.

There were other footballers of excellent quality at W Smitshoek. Denzel had the least skills among all of them. He was seen as the type of player who wouldn’t go far – even to the national team.

Denz was in search of his identity and what he really likes. During his time at VV SMITSHOEK, he decided he would go full into football. My brother found peace within himself at that time.

Denzel cycled to his club in torrential rain, gusty winds, or freezing temperatures. He first went to Smitshoek and later to BVV Barendrecht, a bigger academy he joined in 2013.

He spent most of his childhood enjoying his father’s career success. Since his father was a professional football player, he began school in England. Hulme Hall Grammar School is located in Greater Manchester, where Kasper attended elementary school.

Even as he read his books, he was devoted to sports. In his off-school days, Kaper played goalkeeping football with his friends, including Alex Bruce, the son of Kasper’s father’s former Manchester United teammate Steve Bruce.

The majority of kid footballers begin their careers by joining a football academy, but Kasper was taught by his father. The Manchester United management allowed Kasper to follow his legendary father to training.

• He played at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship, where he impressed as Brazil won the tournament, while on loan to Sevilla from Bahia. As a result, he was named the third-best player of the tournament, and the move to Sevilla was made permanent.
• Sevilla agreed to sell Alves to Liverpool in June 2006, but Liverpool was unable to meet Sevilla’s asking price of around £8 million.
• In December 2006, he signed a new contract with Sevilla, tying him to the club until 2012. He had a successful 2006–07 season, making 47 appearances and scoring 5 goals. He played in every one of Sevilla’s UEFA Cup matches, in a competition which the club went on to win.
• Alves acquired Spanish citizenship during his years in Spain, enabling him to bypass non-EU quota restrictions and to play in any EU country without a work permit.
• SporTV reported on 1 August 2007 that Alves wanted to leave Sevilla for a European giant, and Marca reported that Alves reaffirmed his desire to leave Sevilla, saying he was flattered by Chelsea’s interest and that he could never turn down an opportunity like this.

Barcelona

• Barcelona signed Alves on 2 July 2008, leaving Sevilla in tears and saying he would love to play for the club again. He said he came to Sevilla as a boy and he was leaving as a man. In total, Alves’ transfer to Barcelona cost £23 million, with approximately £7 million more pending on various performance-related factors over the next few seasons, making him one of the most expensive defenders in history and the third-most-expensive player purchased by Barça.
• The club offered him a four-year contract with a €90 million buyout clause. He made his competitive and European debuts for Barcelona against Wisla Kraków in the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League third round qualifier on 13 August 2008.
• In the Liga season-opener against Numancia on 31 August 2008, he made his La Liga debut. The following season, he missed his first UEFA Champions League Final due to a yellow-card suspension, although Barcelona nevertheless defeated Manchester United 2–0 to complete a treble after also winning La Liga and the 2008–09 Copa King.

• Alves signed a two-year contract with Barcelona on 9 June 2015, keeping him at the club until 30 June 2017, with the option of extending his contract.
• Barcelona lost to Atlético Madrid in the 2015–16 quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, and Alves recorded a “bizarre” video in which he impersonated his wife consoling him for the defeat, and posted it on Instagram. Enrique then dropped Alves from the match against Valencia.
• Roberto Fernández, Barcelona’s technical secretary, announced Alves is leaving Barcelona after eight years in June 2016. Alves, who was under contract until 30 June 2017, had a clause in his contract allowing him to leave as a free agent.

Juventus

• Juventus announced the signing of Alves on 27 June 2016, with an option for a third year. In Serie A, he made his Juventus debut on 20 August with a 2–1 home win over Fiorentina.
• In a 4–0 home win over Cagliari on 21 September, Alves scored his first Juventus goal, and six days later he opened his Champions League account for the club against Dinamo Zagreb.
• Juve’s 3–1 loss to Genoa on 27 November resulted in a broken leg for him. On 5 February 2017, Alves returned to action as a substitute in Internazionale’s 1–0 Derby d’Italia win over Derby d’Italia.
• Alves scored one goal and assisted another for Mario Mandzukic in Juventus’ 2–1 win over Monaco on 9 May to qualify for the 2017 Champions League final. Six days earlier, Alves had assisted Gonzalo Higuain on both goals in the first leg of the tie at The Stade Louis II.
• In the 2017 Coppa Italia Final, Alves scored the opening goal in a 2–0 win over Lazio.
• Alves played in his third UEFA Champions League final when Juventus were defeated 4–1 by Real Madrid at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 3 June.
• On 29 June 2017, Alves’ contract with Juventus was terminated by mutual consent. During his one season in Turin, he won the Serie A title and Coppa Italia, making 33 appearances in total.

Paris Saint-Germain

• Alves joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer on 12 July 2017 and signed a two-year contract. He made his debut for the club on 29 July in the 2017 Trophée des Champions as he scored once and assisted the winner for Adrien Rabiot against Monaco in a 2–1 victory.
• Alves assisted Edinson Cavani on PSG’s first goal of the 2017–18 Ligue 1 campaign in a 2–0 win over Amiens at the Parc des Princes on 5 August.
• My start in the 2018 Coupe de France Final has come on 8 May 2018, as PSG defeated Les Herbiers VF 2–0 to win the 2017–18 Coupe de France; he came off in the 86th minute for Thomas Meunier, after sustaining an injury.
• On 28 August 2018, Alves posted on his Instagram page that his squad number has changed from 32 to 13 in tribute to Brazilian legend and four-time World Cup winner Mário Zagallo.
• Following the expiration of his contract with the club on 30 June 2019, Alves became a free agent.

São Paulo

• S*o Paulo announced on 1 August 2019 that Dani Alves had signed a contract that runs until December 2022. As a lifelong supporter of Sao Paulo, Alves had previously expressed his desire to play for the club.
• Upon his arrival, Alves received the number 10 shirt. After making his debut on 18 August 2019, he scored the only goal in a 1–0 league win over Ceará at the Morumbi. Despite being a right-back throughout his career, he mostly played in central midfield at So Paulo during Fernando Diniz’s tenure between 2019 and 2021.
• Upon his arrival, he was also appointed first-team captain. In 2021, new manager Hernán Crespo reverts Alves back to a defensive role, playing him as a right wingback. He also handed the captain’s armband to Miranda, who was returning to the club after a decade.
• A month later, he won his only title with the club and the 42nd of his career, the Campeonato Paulista, ending Sao Paulo’s 8-year trophyless streak.
• As a result of an unpaid image rights dispute, Alves’ representatives informed Sao Paulo on 10 September 2021 that he would no longer train and subsequently play for the club. After six days, his contract was terminated.

Return to Barcelona

• Barcelona announced an agreement in principle to sign Alves until the end of the season on 12 November 2021. He would only be available for the team’s matches starting on 3 January 2022.

International Career

• Alves made his debut for Brazil as a substitute in an unofficial friendly against Kuwaiti club Al-Kuwait Selection on 7 October 2006.
• His first international cap came three days later in a friendly against Ecuador. Brazil elected him to its team for the 2007 Copa América.
• In the final against Argentina on 15 July, he assisted Roberto Ayala’s own goal and scored a goal himself in a 3–0 victory.
• Though he was the most expensive right-back in history at the time, he was initially unable to hold down a regular starting place in the Brazilian national team, with Maicon being the first choice.
• Brazil’s Alves came on as a substitute in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final against South Africa and scored the winning goal, a free-kick, and a goal in the 88th minute in a 1–0 victory.
• He was named to Brazil’s squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup the following summer. Another long-range free-kick was scored by him against Iran on 7 October 2010.

• Alves was named to Brazil’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on home soil on 7 May 2014. Poor performances cost him his position as a starter during the competition. As Brazil defeated Colombia 2–1 in the quarter-finals, both Alves and David Luiz were lauded for comforting James Rodriguez, an act commended by both Rodr*guez and the media for showing respect.
• Alves started for both the 2015 and Centenario Copa América tournaments under Dunga. Following the appointment of Tite, he helped Brazil qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but was ruled out of the tournament due to a knee injury suffered in the 2018 Coupe de France Final.
• In May of 2019, he was included in Brazil’s 23-man squad for the 2019 Copa América in Brazil. He replaced Neymar as Brazil’s captain for the tournament. As Brazil advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5–0 win against Peru on 22 June, Alves scored in the final group match.
• In the final, on 7 July, at the Maracanã Stadium, Brazil defeated Peru 3–1 to win the title; Alves was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The 2019 Copa América marked the 40th title of his career.
• Alves was named to the Brazil Olympic team for the 2020 Summer Olympics on 17 June 2021. Malcolm’s extra-time goal won Brazil the gold medal following a 2–1 victory over Spain in the final. A 38-year-old footballer, he became the oldest person to ever win an Olympic football medal.

Controversy

During a match at Villarreal’s stadium, El Madrigal, on 27 April 2014, Villarreal supporter David Campaya Lleo threw a banana at Alves. Alves picked up the banana, peeled it, and bit into it. His response was:

“We have suffered this in Spain for some time. You have to take it with a dose of humor. We aren’t going to change things easily. If you don’t give it importance, they don’t achieve their objective.”

Neymar responded by posting a photo of himself eating a banana on social media. Many other footballers have since posted photos of themselves eating bananas. Cyrille Regis, who was racially abused on the field during the 1970s and 1980s, expressed concern that the viral campaign would detract from the important issue of combatting racism.

The man who threw the banana at Alves has been arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred on 30 April 2014. Villereal was later fined €12,000 for the incident.
