Silva began playing football with Salgueiros in Porto after quitting swimming. He was born in Baguim do Monte, a nearby parish in Gondomar. He briefly played for the nearby Boavista, but he soon joined his old team.
Silva joined with the juniors in 2011 when he was 15 years old and played his whole youth career there. He made his professional debut on August 12, 2013, when he replaced Tozé in the 77th minute of the B team’s 3-2 victory against Beira-Mar in the Segunda Liga final.
Silva helped Porto B reach the 13th spot in the second tier by playing 34 games and scoring seven goals in his second season. A brace on January 4, 2015, for a 3-0 home victory, was one of the highlights.
On June 12, 2017, Silva signed a five-year deal with AC Milan for a cost of €38 million, with the possibility of an extra €2 million based on performance. I’m really thrilled to have joined such a prominent club with such a tremendous history, he told the reporters after joining. The Gianluca Lapadula-era number 9 jersey was handed to him.
On July 27, Silva made his UEFA Europa League debut for the Italian club, appearing for 24 minutes in a 1-0 victory over Universitatea Craiova. He scored two goals and had one assist in a 6-0 home defeat of Shkndija on August 17 for the same competition but in the play-off round.
On September 2, 2019, Silva made a two-year loan transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt, while Ante Rebi made the reverse move. Twelve days later, he made his Bundesliga debut, playing the full 2-1 loss against Augsburg while partnering fellow countryman and ex-Porto colleague Gonçalo Paciência up front. On September 22, he netted his first goal of the tournament during a 2-2 home tie with Borussia Dortmund.
Following the COVID-19 epidemic, the German league resumed, and Silva scored eight goals in ten games for a season-high 12 goals. Hugo Almeida of Werder Bremen set a record for the most goals scored by a Portuguese player in a German top-flight season, but this broke it by one goal.
On July 2, 2021, Silva signed a five-year contract with RB Leipzig for a sum of €23 million. He scored his first goal in a 4-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart on August 20. His first Champions League goal came against Paris Saint-Germain on October 19 in a 3-2 away defeat during the group stage. In six appearances during their successful DFB-Pokal run, he scored two more goals.
Silva competed for Portugal at all levels of youth. At the 2015 FIFA World Cup, he took part in the under-20 squad, scoring four goals in the group stage to help his country advance to the quarterfinals. Previously, in a 6-1 group stage victory over Hungary at the 2014 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, he made history by being the first player to ever score four goals in a single game. The under-19s ultimately finished second as a result.
In his debut game with the under-21 team on September 8, 2015, Silva scored a hat-trick in 19 minutes (both halves combined), helping his team defeat Albania 6-1 in a match that served as a qualifier for the 2017 European Under-21 Championship.
On 26 August 2016, Silva received his first call-up to the senior squad from head coach Fernando Santos. On September 1 in Porto, Silva played in the second half of a 5-0 friendly victory over Gibraltar. On October 7, during Portugal’s 6-0 rout against Andorra in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifications, he scored his first goal with the national team. He scored three goals in the first half of the Faroe Islands’ eventual 6-0 hammering three days later for the same competition.
