Club Career

  • Areola began playing football at the age of six for Entente Sportive des Petits Anges and spent seven years at his local club before joining Paris Saint-Germain. Upon the recommendation of coaches in Paris, Areola enrolled at the Clairefontaine football center at the age of 15 in order to further his development.
  • The following year, he returned to PSG and signed a three-year contract, his first professional contract with the club.
  • After advancing through PSG’s academy, Areola made his senior debut for the club on 18 May 2013, replacing first-choice goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu in the 48th minute of a 3–1 home victory over Brest. Before the match, PSG had already been crowned Ligue 1 champions and their opponents were already relegated.
  • The following weekend, he made his first start for the club in a 3–1 win over Lorient, playing 61 minutes before being substituted for Ronan Le Crom, who was sent off later in the match for a foul on Julien Quercia.

Loans to Lens, Bastia, and Villarreal

  • The 23-year-old was loaned to Ligue 2 side Lens, managed by former PSG manager Antoine Kombouaré, for the 2013–14 Ligue 1 season.
  • Areola immediately replaced Rudy Riou as the club’s starting goalkeeper, and he made 36 appearances for the season, including his Coupe de France debut. Additionally, he helped the club earn a promotion to Ligue 1 by finishing second in the league.
  • Areola’s outstanding performances throughout the year earned him the Ligue 2 Goalkeeper of the Year award and a spot in the team of the season. He was also named the Eurosport Revelation of the Year, beating out the likes of N’Golo Kante and Gaëtan Bussmann.
  • There was a verbal agreement for Areola to stay at Sang et Or on loan for the following season, but Sang et Or’s financial troubles raised concerns with the League’s National Directorate of Management Control, which prevented him from returning.
  • As Areola found himself in Ligue 1, Claude Makélélé’s Bastia signed him on loan for the 2014–15 season, with the transfer completed on 26 July 2014.
  • After replacing Mickael Landreau, he made his first appearance for the club on 9 August in a 3–3 draw with Marseille.
  • Areola appeared in 39 games for Bastia across all competitions, keeping 13 clean sheets as the club ended the Ligue 1 season in 12th place and as runners-up in the Coupe de la Ligue.
  • During the Final on 11 April, Bastia and Areola’s parent club PSG battled it out, with PSG winning 4–0.
  • Villarreal announced on 17 June 2015 that they had signed Areola on a season-long loan as a replacement for regular goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo who had been injured the season before.
  • At the start of the season, he made his debut for the club in a 1-1 draw with Real Betis. At Villarreal, Areola improved his already burgeoning reputation by keeping 15 clean sheets in 37 appearances and conceding only 26 goals as the club finished fourth in La Liga.
  • During the regular season, he was only surpassed by two goalkeepers: Jan Oblak of Atlético Madrid and Claudio Bravo of Barcelona.
  • Additionally, Areola broke the club record of 615 minutes without conceding a goal, previously held by Diego Lopez, ultimately going 620 minutes unbeaten before conceding to Las Palmas.
  • The Frenchman played in the Europa League for the first time in his career, making five appearances as El Submarino Amarillo reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual runners-up Liverpool.

Return to PSG

  • After a successful stint in Spain, Areola returned to PSG for the 2016–17 Ligue 1 season. During the season, he spent time under German goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, who had signed the season before, and was in PSG’s match-day squad for its 4–1 win against Lyon.
  • During what was also his debut in the Champions League, he made his first appearance following his return on 13 September in a 1–1 draw with Arsenal.
  • As a result of the match against Arsenal, Areola established himself as PSG’s first-choice goalkeeper and had kept four clean sheets in eight appearances by mid-October.
  • After a string of matches in December in which he conceded 10 goals from just 11 attempts, he lost his place to Trapp after a long slump in form.
  • He was an unused substitute as PSG beat Monaco 4-1 in April 2015 to win a record fourth straight Coupe de la Ligue, but he started against Angers the following month in which PSG lifted the Coupe de France title.
  • The following year, on 29 July 2017, Areola won his second Trophée des Champions medal, starting in PSG’s 2–1 win over Monaco which earned them their fifth consecutive title.
  • During the season, he was PSG’s undisputed goalkeeper in the league and Europe, with Trapp preferred in cup competitions, and was a regular part of the club’s record-breaking run through the Champions League group stages.
  • As a result of Areola’s superb play, PSG conceded just one goal in their opening five matches and scored 24 goals, the most ever recorded by a club in the group stages of a competition.
  • With a 3–0 win against Monaco on 31 March 2018, Areola was an unused substitute as PSG retained the Coupe de la Ligue title.
  • On 15 April, he started in goal as PSG beat Monaco, the Ligue 1 champions, 7–1 to win the title.
  • On 8 May, the club completed a domestic treble by beating Les Herbiers to lift the Coupe de France trophy for the fourth consecutive season; even though Areola was an unused substitute.
  • It was after Areola was relegated to a rotational role during the following season that the club signed veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon from Juventus. PSG won its eighth league title the same day he made his 100th PSG appearance, in a 3–1 win over Monaco on 21 April 2019.

Loans to Real Madrid, Fulham, and West Ham United

  • On 2 September 2019, Areola signed a season-long loan deal with Real Madrid as part of a deal that saw Keylor Navas leave PSG for Real Madrid.
  • On 25 September, he made his debut for the club, playing in a 2–0 win over Osasuna.
  • The Belgian goalkeeper was primarily used as a backup to Thibaut Courtois for the remainder of the season and played just nine games across all competitions, including four in La Liga as Real won the 2019–20 title.
  • Areola signed for Fulham on a season-long loan with a purchase option on 9 September 2020. One week later, in the EFL Cup, he made his debut for the club with a 1–0 win over Ipswich Town.
  • Fulham was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season, and Areola’s option to buy wasn’t exercised. However, he did win Fulham Player of the Season as voted for by the fans.
  • West Ham United announced the signing of Areola on 29 July 2021 on a season-long loan with an option to purchase. His debut came in the EFL Cup on 22 September, when he kept a clean sheet in a 1–0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

  • As part of the French team’s preparation for hosting UEFA Euro 2016, Areola was called up by manager Didier Deschamps for friendly matches against Armenia and Denmark.
  • He didn’t make the tournament squad but was called up three times for friendlies and World Cup qualifiers from September through November 2016, although he was forced to withdraw after injuring his ankle.
  • On 17 May 2018, he was named to Deschamps’ 23-man team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. There he served as the third goalkeeper behind Hugo Lloris and Steve Mandanda as France went on to lift the title.
  • In doing so, he became the first player since Argentina’s Héctor Zelada in 1986 to lift the World Cup trophy despite being uncapped for his country at the time.
  • As a result of a thigh injury sustained by Lloris, Areola was appointed France’s starting goalkeeper for the nation’s opening UEFA Nations League match against Germany on 6 September.
